Busted out my fifteen year old Saitek X45 stick/throttle and played through the first few training missions. Pretty loving amazing on the Rift, money well spent I'd say. I need to get the controls all mapped out a bit better, so I don't have to keep hopping out to rebind or look at menus.

I'm gonna let my VR ADD calm down a bit before I really dive into this, but I'll definitely hop in the discord once I do.

I made some money getting lucky bounty hunting around the horizons starting point and got up to a diamondback scout then saw the stuff about power play and decided to fly all the way down to Kamadhenu and join the bounty bonus person. Are there any good systems nearby for bounty hunting? I haven't been having much luck and if i die one more time I'm going to be in trouble. You can go here to search for stations that have specific modules: https://eddb.io/station

Also, if you have more questions, your best bet is to go to the Elite thread in PGS and get on the discord there. There's a dedicated support channel on the server, and the people there are pretty cool to hang out with and sperg out about this game.

I kept trying to "head toward that cool group of stars" but let me tell you it is pretty loving difficult to figure out which way you need to go to get there and ended up lucking into finding the black treasure, which didn't look as cool back then as it does now. Why can't the ship computer tell me what star I am pointing at from the cockpit and plot a route there? I bet it is a lot easier now that your ingress azimuth and apogee (would that be what it is called?) is maintained when arriving out of witchspace instead of just randomly placing you somewhere near the destination star and facing it.

Still a neat thing to see in space though and I had a little moment when someone said the skyboxes are boring. Lil guy doesn't realize it all looks the same when relatively you're staying in the same place. It would be much easier to see immediate drastic changes if we could just step through a Stargate and be in another galaxy and then could use these skyboxes to program the DHD to get us back to SG-1!

Getting 50+ ly out of it now; can't wait to see how much that weight reduction (along with a couple other 2.3 engineering additions) improves things.

That's true it is pretty different at different places around the bubble, but I guess not as different as some games where every time you "warp" to a new solar system the entire background is completely different because it is all fake so they can just plop you inside a nebula or have a galaxy that spreads from one horizon to the other.

I actually spent a few hours in VR on Sol stargazing which was a lot more difficult than I expected because, guess what, there are actually a lot of stars in space. I've lived in or near a city my whole life so it was challenging to find constellations I knew because there were just too many god damned stars everywhere. Even those I knew had so many extra larger magnitude stars in them that they were difficult to identify. I admit got a little weepy as if I was sitting in the Infinite Perspective Vortex.

Just checking out Elite again because I wanted to play something with my joystick. Couple questions: Are passenger missions worth it? What's the strategy there- take some long exploration ones outside of the bubble and maybe find one or two that are long range but end roughly in the same area? Just settle on one class or is there any reason to mix it up?

I haven't been able to find a succinct guide that addresses the optimal, or at the very least effective strategy for them. All of the guides are like square-peg-round-hole "First you will need a passenger cabin."

My only current ship is an exploration Clipper, which now that we have module storage I might make a true multi-role. (Let me guess there's some huge moneywall/restriction on that?) in any case it feels appropriate that the super sleek Clipper has some high value VIPs in it.

The mods don't effect weight on the stock armor, so just slap a heavy-duty armor mod on it! :eng101:

Do the short-range missions: you'll make more money more quickly. The trick with VIPs is that they take up the whole cabin, even if there is more space. So, if you have a 6-passenger cabin and the missions is for two VIP passengers, they will take up all 6 seats.

No penalty for using module storage, but there is a limit to the number of modules you can store (30ish?).

Is there anything inherently "bad" about the long range missions or are they just less effective? It may not be the most efficient but I like the idea of flying out 2kly for 40m instead of bussing a small distance over and over.

Sounds like I should have a single VIP cabin and maybe a business cabin or two if I can stack two or more nearby missions. Do the missions with the planet icon require an SRV, or just planetary landing?

Nothing inherently bad about the long haul missions so do whatever you prefer.

Planet icon missions just involve flying close to the ground to scan a mission specific nav marker. No need to actually land so you can skip the SRV.

That's what Silent Running mode is for. A sensible method is to drop into the station, immediately turn round and boost away from the station and get yourself lined up about 10km from the entrance. Then 3/4 throttle in and engage Silent Running at about 8km before requesting docking.

A funner way is to boost to the side of the station and use your vertical thrusters like your ship has just took a hit of crack, and as you approach the lip of the station you nose that bastard down so that you schlepppp around the top of the station at stupid oval office miles an hour, popping through the toast-rack as your passenger pops their lunch out of their hat rack.

Engineered LW armor mod is, imo, nearly useless. The main stat roll does nothing for the default armor so you would only consider it on military grade or higher armor. But if you're fitting military grade+ armor, you most likely are not concerned with the increased mass and are instead looking for maximum hull strength. In which case, heavy duty it's the clear choice. Thus, for default or non-default armor, HD is the only real option.
