I would like if someone were to compose and perform a late-80s-early-90s-style PSA rap for kids telling them how to take care of cats. Please include this line.

the one time he ran out the door (after another cat) I was also pulling pork. I rushed out and grabbed him after breaking the fight up with canned air. his fur looked like it had been styled with cans of pomade.

he groomed himself for three hours or so. he was so happy.

How old is Gizmo now, anyway? I have a theory that cat grumpiness is directly proportional to lifespan and I need hard data.

my experience is they get way friendlier as they get older. some who never liked to be petted suddenly wanted pets once they got to be elderly. actually I've found that true with every aloof cat I've ever had

direct current :roboluv: only
So in summary, what to look for in a cat:

  • Talk to the shelter about what you're looking for in a cat and they can guide you towards a good match.
  • Get two cats so they don't get lonely during the day.
  • Bonded pairs of cats are harder to adopt out.
  • Kittens are adorable shitheads with the most evil farts. A kitten needs another cat.
  • Older cats are harder to adopt out and have more well-known personalities.
  • Orange is a good starter cat.
  • Black cats are also harder to adopt out for superstitious reasons.
  • Get a cow cat
  • Engage with all the cats at the shelter.
  • Aggressive or mean cats may just be stressed about being sheltered.
  • Ask if the shelter has a trial period and exchange policy if cat doesn't work out.

and what to get cat:

  • Litter box
  • Cat carrier
  • Scratching post, or cardboard scratching block, to save furniture. Bucket will only use an infinity scratcher.
  • A couple of toys. Maybe a bird wand.
  • Wait until you know whether the cat likes to hide or perch before getting hutches or trees
  • Cat bed when cat has decided where it likes to sleep.
  • Everything comes with a box for the cat to play with. Catit designs packaging for other toys to be toys.
  • Amarkat makes good cat trees
  • Drape sheets over furniture with gaps under so the cat has a hidey hole.
  • Try to get the same food as the shelter, but migrate them onto something healthier. Science diet or Wellness core are recommended. Check with Pet Island.
  • Cats are dumb and don't drink enough. Get a fountain. https://www.amazon.com/Catit-43742-Flower-Fountain/dp/B0146QXOB0/ref=pd_lpo_199_bs_tr_t_2?_encoding=UTF8&refRID=6WEVAD8CA2XR5P7Q6E07&th=1 is recommended
  • Consider pet insurance.

Synthbuttrange
May 6, 2007

Yup.

Also there's no guarantee they'll use anything for what you intend. I've got a few beds for them that have gone unused 99% of the time. They'll just sleep on the floor or on my bed.

You'll need a claw clipper to trim down their claws.

If you have heavily textured fabric furniture that's a goddamn sign for cats saying 'CLAW THE gently caress OUT OF ME' so you might consider scratching tape which lightly adheres to it. https://www.budgetpetproducts.com.au/new/product/sticky-paws-on-a-roll-10-metres/4158/ for example.

You'll also want to give their teeth a weekly brush with a cat appropriate brush and toothpaste.

I'm a bad cat dad and rarely brush Leo and CJ's teeth and even then it's just with water. :(

Synthbuttrange

I've started feeding my cats with dental formula food and it's really cleaned off the light staining. Unfortunately it cant do a thing against the pre-existing tartar buildup though, so they'll have to go and get a proper clean one day.
