I like plenty of Japanese games and other Japanese things without being self-conscious about it, there's a difference between Japanese pop culture, Japanese culture in general, and anime, are you aware of that.

Yes. Apparently you're not though. Maybe you could explain the question: What makes Chrono Trigger 'less anime'?

Define 'anime'. Even if it has multiple definitions you should still be able to define it. So what's the definition, Lurdiak, beyond "thing I say when I want to whine about things."

Frankly I never liked the wacky pop culture references in Fallout games. For several reasons I guess: referential humour is the lowest form of wit, not sarcasm; what are 80s references doing in this far-future sci-fi world whose aesthetics are 60s kitsch; way to date your game, nerds

This is why I really liked Horizon: Zero Dawn, it's basically Fallout if you got rid of all that campiness

I've never taken Wild Wasteland in New Vegas because I got so turned off by Black Isle / Obsidian's "wacky side" from the earlier games, but people insist on using it all the time. So do the New Vegas gags fall into the latter category?

Well there are two examples that come to mind. One is Johnny Five Aces, straight up just being in the game. That's just a reference, I'll admit it, but it's a reference to something so stupid that I still find it pretty funny. They put four balls on a cliff and everything. That's a lot better than just recreating monty python gags everyone was already super sick of, at least to me.

Another example of a reference that's actually a joke is a skeleton wearing a fedora next to a blown up fridge. That's obviously a reference to Indiana Jones 4, but it's also a joke, because they're saying "Yeah he'd be loving dead, let's be serious."

There's also really minor referential things like I think one alien has Elvis hair, and there's a weapon that changes from "Fist of Rawr" to "Fist of the North Rawr", and I'm just neutral on those (although I find the pun on the latter to be inspired).

But yeah overall I'd say wild wasteland adds more actual jokes than it does references. And the references it does add are so bizarre and inspired that they don't bug me in a Family Guy kind of way.

There are many, many plot points that are reminiscent not just of any generic post-apocalypse but of specific storytelling beats and tropes from Fallout, and they brought in the lead writer from New Vegas. The lineage is there.

It takes place in the American Southwest, there are old robots and vaults you can activate, and uh you can get power armor. That's all I got.

Fallout's tone has always been pretty tongue-in-cheek though. Horizon takes its apocalypse story seriously.

Good lord, I made a post about this two weeks ago. If you really, absolutely want a definition of what I mean when I say "Anime", imagine some kind of melding of Sword Art Online, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Melty Blood, Gundam Seed, Clannad, La Blue Girl, Virtual Girl Ai, Star Ocean, Phantasy Star Online, and uh, poo poo, I dunno, Hunter X Hunter. Now please, do me a favor and don't ask for an exact breakdown of the tropes and artistic directions that these works have in common or whatever obsessive bullshit you're going to pull next.

exquisite tea posted:

I dunno. Fallout's tone wavers in and out of satire, kind of like a Paul Verhoven film (except Starship Troopers, that one's just 100% goofy). I wouldn't say anything about The Master is tongue in cheek, for example.

I am perfectly fine staying one expansion behind with a Paradox game, they need time to patch all the things they inadvertently mess up with the new DLC anyway
