Some more questions I've thought about after finishing the game:

Why is A2 naked? Why does 2B have such a pervy outfit?

What happens in the ending? 2B, 9S, and A2 get rebuilt - will the whole thing just start all over again? I think one of the pods mentioned that.

Who the gently caress were Adam and Eve, anyway? Were they modeled after anyone in particular? Why did they look like humans when the other machines looked like Lego pieces? Why did they bleed? Why does anybody bleed in this game?

The real reason is that's just how the devs did it, but there's an explanation that makes sense in-game. The machines are obsessed with becoming more human; they imitate human actions while never really understanding why humans did what they did. This is a theme that is present all throughout the game. Every area's machine population focuses on a particular aspect of humanity that they think is most important. One of the first aspects we are introduced to is beauty and sexuality. So is it really strange that they would create a being that has a rippling six-pack or a butt that won't quit? Or that they would wear clothing that emphasizes those features? You'll notice that no one ever draws attention to anyone else's appearance, and that is because no one really understands the meaning behind how they look or dress. In the context of the game, you can't really say that 2B wears a sexy outfit because machines don't have sex. As for A2, I think she's naked because that's just how they did it back when she was made. Machines are shown to evolve, so I think it makes sense that YorHa protocol can change as well.

In that ending, it is implied that the same things will happen again, because they are machines after all. Actually, that's kind of a thing that happens with human as well. But since that ending is all about the player forcing a more desired happy ending, I think they end up alright.

Adam and Eve are the next step the machines have made in becoming more human. Like I said above, they are modeled after what the machines think a beautiful human looks like. Androids/machines bleed because that's what humans do.

vvv I stand corrected on that point.

To be fair A2 is like that since she's been on the run for years without a chance for maintenance. In the stage play she wears about the same getup as anyone on YoRHa

The beauty of Yoko Taro games is that there's never a question of 'is this canon' because the answer is 'Yes, it is, and so is everything else, especially the parts that contradict.'

I've gotten into a pattern lately where I just fire up the game and play until something crushingly depressing happens. Today it was Route C and Pascal's story. I'd been told that if I killed him, I'd lose the chance to buy some weapons. But when the choice came, I felt torn: Pascal was asking, one way or another, for death. And If I wanted the items, I'd be lobotomizing someone for my own personal gain. That, after seeing the robot children kill themselves (because it's not a Yoko Taro game til some kids die!) was too much, and I've since sat here thinking about the situation. For the record, I let him live, but I don't feel any less of a bastard for it.

He's a very polite, rather shy man who describes himself as a major horror nerd. In interviews, he seems rather baffled by the idea that he's this icon of horror considered by many to be on a par with King or Cronenberg (who's also very nice to his fans and very unassuming). It seems to be an unwritten rule that horror writers are much like their fans: kinda dorky, excitable and bewildered by praise.

Is ito the "this is my hole" guy? Is he also the author of the one where fish grow weird legs and a guy gets a shark in his house. That one was loving absurdly delightful.

More importantly, her character arc is about her becoming something other than a murderer. When we're first introduced to her, almost all of the sex appeal of her outfit has been worn down to tatters, a clear link between how she's almost fully abandoned the human concept of love on favor of embracing hatred.

He's the mangaka behind The Enigma of Amigara Fault, yes. I recommend checking out the rest of his work some time; Hellstar Ramina is a masterpiece of surreal horror.

So when did you guys fall for this game? Wanna know if there is some great part coming up that sold everyone or if i'm just not getting it. I'm trying REALLY REALLY hard to like it, but the combat lacks any depth and outside of two boss fights most missions have been the worst offenders of MMO questing with "go here, come back and then go back where you were three times more" and escort missions. Music is very good at least.

When one of the fighter pilots immediately gets chumped in the prologue. Body count 1. :unsmigghh:

Dante's allowance - $100
The game hooked me immediately because I've been a fan of Yoko Taro for such a long time, but I knew I was in for something truly special when the title card appeared in Route C. Routes A and B are some Taro-lite poo poo, the obvious stuff everyone expects him to do.

Then Route C starts, and the kid gloves come off.

The demo sold me on the game, which is basically just the prologue. I also loving love Platinum games, and I even liked Korra so simpler Platinum is fine, as long as it's still rock-solid and leaves room for experimentation. I wish the weapon system was more in-depth, similar to Transformers: Devastation, though.

It took me a while to get into it, but once the phrase 'become as gods' entered the picture, yeah, I knew we were in Taro Country. And then Route B ended, the 'episode preview' started and... I cannot remember the last time a game gave me chills like that.

The fish one is Gyo, which got an okay animated adaptation, which changed a whole lot for no real reason. Uzumaki's considered his best work, but his short story collections are superb. As mentioned, a lot of his work veers heavily towards the surreal. Weird stuff happens with no real explanation, but rather than it just feeling like he threw in something to confuse you, it works and becomes loving terrifying. One of my favourite of his short stories involved people being haunted by gigantic, grotesque balloons. The balloons take the shape of their head and face, track down the person they look like, then catch them with a noose and kill them. It sounds stupid as poo poo, but you read it and it sticks with you.

I'm going to be very much amazed if the deal with the doors will somehow involve the doors opening and leading to content without any kind of download taking place. It's good to hear they haven't forgotten about them. If they had it would have bugged me for ages to come.

I kinda assume the 'impractical' outfits Yorha use is basically an explicit reminder to other androids of humanity-that-was, to lend credibility to the idea that the tide of war has turned and that the androids are no longer scrabbling around in the dirt to survive.

My interpretation of the YorHa outfits is that the brains behind YorHa designed the androids to be as "human" as possible and to that extent, emphasized two qualities: sex and violence. Sexy robot lady? Check. Sexy robot lady with a katana? Perfect!

I am incredibly doubtful that's the original location of Kaine's shack since that'd mean there's a whole shopping mall above the Aerie and I don't believe for a second that there's a mall way above there.

Re: mangaka chat, if you like dark stories like Nier, check out Inio Asano. Dead Dead Demons De DeDeDeDestruction is an alien invasion story about propaganda and lopsided power dynamics. Also has pretty sweet title drops like Nier: Automata does, and Asano openly said that he put cute girls as the main characters to trick people into reading it. It's probably his least dark story but that's because all his other ones are really crushingly bleak. Rather than an action or thriller story, it's kind of a story about daily life in an alien-invaded Tokyo, but there are some things in Nier: Automata that really reminded me of this manga (can't say without spoiling it).
