This is exactly how it came across and it's really lovely. You have every other forum, website, app, comment section, etc. that will allow you to be pedantic. You don't have to come into a minority-majority space and do it there, too. I understand that it wasn't your intent to be an rear end in a top hat, but every other platform or forum we might have gets derailed in this exact same way and it's irritating as gently caress.

Yeah this. I think it was the feminism thread where it was pointed out that the problem with DnD is a bunch of internet nerds who treat political discussions as a privileged white dude game to play, which gets super lovely when posters start making dumb thought experiment arguments to dismiss the perspectives of people who are actually living through the issue in question.

That got raised in the context of the terrible abortion thread in DnD and its dismissiveness of women's experiences, but Neuroliminal and Moridin920 have been doing the exact same thing here with black people.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions. What counts is how you act, and the way you've acted has been dismissive of black people's perspectives and lived experiences.

Also, "sorry if it came across that way" is pretty close to "sorry that you were offended" and is a pretty weak apology. How about "I'm sorry. I realise that I was being dismissive. I'll stop doing that right now, reflect on it and try and do better in the future" ?

E: One of the issues with privilege is that you will inevitably do things that are prejudiced without realising it. Good allyship is about listening when you get called on these, then acknowledging and apologising graciously.

And TB gets it in one.

It's a tedious pattern, so I'll drop a parting shot in as the barreling heats up. As noted in my post - a primary form of racism you're displaying is that you consistently devalue the experience and expertise of black posters while overvaluing your own. You only heed the message when a white poster explains it to you-despite the fact that black posters had called out your problem repeatedly.

Even after acknowledging what's occurring, you can't bring yourself to accept the validity of TB's (accurate!) statements. On the off chance you choose to read this: Understand that recognizing racism, like Democratic Party efforts for racial justice, is an area you clearly lack expertise in. When people who are more experienced than you call out racism, fight the instinct to add your own opinion. Shut the gently caress up and listen. Try to identify what they're seeing. LEARN, even if it means believing black people and - going out on a limb here based on how quickly you went to 'hysterical' on TB - :females:.

This doesn't mean that people who call out racism or sexism or various-phobia are always correct. But it's evident that you lack the ability to discern that for yourself, so go ahead and trust the experts until you learn more.

The data linked here shows a support of black people but I didn't need the data because I believe you.

I know each of you are an individual and you're only a minority of the many people of color in America and elsewhere but do you feel the current crop of incumbent Democrats is supporting you and standing up or do you think there are some that need to be replaced? I'm radical, and I'm upset that so many of them have been voting in line with fascists I just don't see that as supportive because fascists bad but I'm sure I'm not looking at the big picture.

If my aim really is to support minorities then I can't just use you as a cudgel or talking point, I need to back you up. I would like to know if the Dems we got are good and support who you support.

In my experience one of the quickest ways to be labeled a 'Neoliberal' in D&D or in left-leaning discussions elsewhere is to point out that reality doesn't work like those thought experiments. Reality is ugly and you have to be persistent. Push when it's time to push, chip away when it isn't.

The really stupid thing is that that sort of behavior also tends to play right into the hands of the true regressives and has also contributed to some of the rolling back of progress since the CRA. I don't think (and I could easily be wrong) that we've fallen back past that point yet overall but I'm not sure if that's true for all points. Mainly due to the knock-on effects from things like the increased militarization of police and how the widening income inequality is going to hit PoC's even harder since they're already starting at a disadvantage to begin with.

Strength comes from unity and numbers and that is one of the main ways that progress can be made, but we're not getting that unity right now and we're not getting it for really dumb reasons.

BRAKE FOR MOOSE

That's not really it, the deal is that we have some nerds with zero emotional investment in a topic trying to argue from first principles like it's a goddamn philosophy class when other people in the thread literally have their lives depending on the political outcome going one way. I'll do that in some threads here (like the free speech thread) but I'll also think about humanity long enough to not require a perfectly generalizable ethical progression to fit all possibilities. The abortion thread was a disaster because a bunch of dudes had to be led to conclusions like "women deserve bodily autonomy" from an argument of definitions instead of accepting it as an axiom upon which we started discussion.

On the topic of sharing awesome black leaders who are preaching unity, here's Khalid Kamau, activist of both Black Lives Matter Atlanta and Democratic Socialists of America, running for city council

http://www.truth-out.org/opinion/item/40005-socialist-organizer-and-black-lives-matter-activist-runs-for-office-in-fulton-georgia

I understand that a large part of worries among black posters ITT has been that black leaders of both fiscal and social activism are being ignored or assaulted, and that one fears that the new leftist movement is ignoring or even hostile to black american and socially leftist politics, as well as general D&D fears that Sanders & volunteers are only in this for Sanders, so these parts stood out to me:

Khalid Kamau posted:

There were a variety of factors, but it all really began with Bernie Sanders. I don't think any of us yet recognized how monumental his campaign was. Every presidential race brings into the political process a new generation of volunteers, people who are willing to knock doors and get involved in politics, but Bernie galvanized a group of highly educated, highly skilled activists. These people were pretty much already politically involved, folks like myself. Then, he charged us to run for local office, specifically, as a way of both infiltrating and transforming the Democratic Party, and working our way up the political ladder.

...

I think it is very important. We only have a two-party system, unfortunately, right now. So, in states where Democrats are not in power (red states), it is very important to network nationally so that you can get a level of support both financially and in terms of volunteers that your party locally may not be able to supply. I don't think that we have a shortage of volunteers in Georgia, but it has been amazing, the groundswell of financial support that I have gotten nationally just being aligned with Our Revolution and Bernie Sanders and by the Democratic Socialists of America, which Bernie also came out of. I travelled to New York to speak at the youth conference, signed up scores of volunteers, received thousands upon thousands of dollars, at this point, tens of thousands of dollars in donations from across the country.

It's a very :unsmith: feeling to know that the movement is touching people like Khalid and shaping democrat leaders of tomorrow.
