Finished up Patriot. Amazing cinematography with great writing, and I hope Amazon renews it for season 2.

Adult Swim has made Carl's voice robotic and added a laugh track for April Fool's ATHF. Of course, it's the Hand Banana episode.

More than this episode, they've been doing it since midnight on all the shows. Cleveland Show had Seinfeld music between scenes. Tonight's gag must be sitcom.

wormil posted:It starts well but quickly becomes extremely formulaic. Here is every episode: introduce half a dozen red herrings, pick one at random as guilty and justify with evidence discovered or exposed in the last five minutes. It's literally the worst kind of mystery and "Sherlock" is a slightly smarter than average guy with a database like brain with millions of random facts and suppositions that would only work on a TV show against two dimensional criminals. S1 and maybe 2 are worth watching, that's it. Seems about right for Sherlock Holmes, I suppose. Edit: Can anyone help me out with the title of this TV movie? At least, I'm pretty sure it was a TV movie. It was about this nebbish, insecure office worker with a porn addiction who starts making his own amateur porn movies, then films himself having sex with his girlfriend without her consent and ends up shooting her dead when he goes to threaten the his sleazy producer not to release the film? I remember seeing that on TV years and years ago and I saw an episode of some crime procedural recently which reminded me of it; like I say, I'm only pretty sure it was a TV movie. Cartoon Network's April's Fools prank is adding googly eyes to the main characters in all of their shows. They move with the characters, too. It's amazing.

13 Reasons Why is surprisingly fantastic. (despite running with one the most common teen-movie premises of all time) However, I would strongly suggest anyone even remotely depressed about their life at the moment against watching past the first few episodes. Things get very heavy before it's over.

Imposters is pretty good but the "next episode" previews love to spoil things. And usually spoilers don't bother me much, but here they seem so counterproductive to how the actual show handles things. I mean at end of episode 2 and beginning of episode 3 there's this kind of fakeout trick, except it's completely deflated by the previews from episode 1. Why?Hughmoris posted:I haven't seen the latest season of Sherlock. Was it really that lovely? I largely think Sherlock is okay, but the season 4 finale genuinely seems like someone's lovely fan fiction accidentally got made into an episode. Sherlock's super-autistic mind-wizard sister seizes control of the island super-prison where she's incarcerated (she accomplishes this basically via magic) then traps Sherlock & friends in a bunch of Zero Escape style murder-game puzzle-rooms so she can analyze emotions. Also she spurs the action on using a James Moriarty soundboard that she recorded years ago as a birthday present. Anyway ultimately Sherlock uses his Sherlock-powers to teach her how to feel bad about things and everything turns out okay, except she kinda killed a bunch of people but whatever. You didn't know Sherlock had a sister? Well that's because Mycroft brainwashed Sherlock to forget about her. AIRTIGHT. Except she kinda had to understand emotions for any of this to work.

Baronash posted:I'll never understand this forum's willingness to accept absurdity in the plots of some shows but not others. Sherlock doesn't lean into absurd plots though, it continues playing things straight even as it devises increasingly silly scenarios and that's kind of the crux of the problem. In Legends absurd stuff happens, and it's often played for comedy. Also Legends kind of embraces the idea that everyone on the team is a bumbling idiot, so when dumb things happen that seems appropriate. But in Sherlock (especially that finale) absurd stuff happens, and it's usually treated with a weight and seriousness that it really doesn't deserve. Also Sherlock constantly tries to concince you that nearly every character is a super-genius mastermind, so dumb things happening feels incompatible with how "smart" every character is supposed to be. So really you're making a false equivalence here, that because both shows have absurd plots they must also handle those plots in the same way and be equally good. But "Absurdity = good" is not what people are saying. And I think some more accurate summaries are: Idiots + dumb plots + goofing off = comedy or trashy fun Super-geniuses + dumb plots + seriousness = What the hell am I watching?

Someone said Sherlock is 1 good episode and 2 bad ones, and I agree and would say that's every season of Sherlock. The problem with S4 was they kept playing 'gotcha!' The episodes were boring and then a big twist in the last act makes you realize everything was a lie. But if you really want to watch the best interpretation of Sherlock Holmes, find The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes from the 80's with Jeremy Brett. I didn't buy into the hype for a long time until it came on Netflix several years ago and now I understand why people say Brett is the best Sherlock.
