It's surprising how much better STO did F2P than most other offerings. Ironically it's developed later cousin Neverwinter Online was an unrepentant wallet gouging piece of poo poo where literally everything cost real money and lots of it.

Asimo

Yeah I suspect that the main thing that saved STO is that it started as a subscription MMO under someone other than PWE. That kind of moderated how much bullshit they could get away with, and insured at least a vaguely functional amount of inventory space and character slots and all that sort of quality of life stuff. Neverwinter was built from the ground up to be F2P with a vast assortment of bullshit to force you to spend money and it's just intolerable. I swear to god what got me to quit that early on was inventory space of all things, where you had like twenty item slots, everything dropped dozens of different types of crafting/augmenting trash, and they wanted like fifteen loving dollars for a single-character bag purchase.

The sci pilot escort is the best of the three to get if you're only getting one. And they are definitely funner to play than regular escorts.

What makes the sci pilot the best...is it a trait or the lt com sci slot? Probably only have enough imaginary points to cash in for one of these.

I believe the Sci Pilot escort has the best starship trait. The engineering and tactical ones aren't that great.

Yes.

There are some gimmick builds where you might want the tactical pilot escort but zero builds where you specifically want the engineering version over the other variants.

A big part of the sci pilot ship being top was having extra science console slots for embassy consoles, and that will be pointless after the space rebalance patch. But having access to grav well and the best trait still makes it the best by far yeah.

Fixed that for the incoming Gravwell nerf.

Also FYI for anyone still playing this game. The new event queue has no afk penalty, cannot be failed and nothing you do in it actually affects the reward you receive.

The heavy weapon railgun thing looks kind of bad TBH. A 360 degree "torpedo" for lack of a better word with 20% shield bleedthrough that costs -10 weapon power to fire and doesn't work with any skills.

Technical Analysis
Nov 21, 2007

I got 99 problems but the British ain't one.
Having dicked around with it, the weapon power is hardly noticeable, it has a 4 second cool down, and if it's currently bugged healing numbers are anything like it's damage numbers are going to be, it'll be a drat fine addition to any escort.

EDIT: Also, the rail gun upgrades with cannon upgrades, so it's entirely likely it's one of what will soon be multiple options for the heavy weapon slots. Heavy torpedo launchers, light beam lances, that sort of thing.

They did say in the announcement that they're adding more heavy weapons down the road. I would expect it to be after they've added the slots to the older models though.

Asimo
Sep 23, 2007

Yeah the real question is whether they'll add more "interesting" heavy weapons down the line. Like stuff like lance-style weapons with narrow firing arcs is basically a given, but there's a lot of potential room for more esoteric stuff too, especially since you'll only ever have one of them on a ship. Hell a lot of the lobi ship weapons (like the elachi heavy single cannon or that hirogen 12km gun) would've made more sense as heavy weapons.

But knowing cryptic they'll probably just all be turret-style things, maybe with whatever proc du jour is on the weapons in that patch. :effort:

Not that that's especially foul. And there's still the potential for oddity. Picture some 'Super Tetryon Cannon' that's murder on shields, but foul on hull. It's :effort: but not :effort:.

You know this makes me wonder if the reason heavy weapons aren't affected by skills is because Cryptic's planning to add some AOE ones later.

.. Nah the real answer is because they're in a new slot and this probably horribly breaks their skill code.
