In 968 news, I reglued a ton of tabs that have bolts for keeping the rear hatch spoiler and side trim on that had snapped loose. They looked like they were glued at the factory with a really thin solvent based glue then most had been repaired in the past with some other heavy glue so I redid them in panel adhesive. I stripped and replated all the fasteners in zinc-nickel and blasted then painted anything that was still bonded to plastic. Rattles should be pretty much gone because about 75% of the fastener points were broken. I also manually replaced the crappy old sunroof with a new glass one so now there's not a huge urge to troubleshoot the millions of power components involved in making the button work. Looks pretty great inside and outside. By Wednesday hopefully the shift boot arrives so I can install that, adjust the SSK, button up the console, and splice/heatshrink the last of the loose or cut wires.

My money is on abused cars if 30k is their clutch change interval. Probably owned by owners with little mechanical sympathy or left leg skill. I can't imagine that 911 drivers to be comprised of a large number of idiots who'd hoon about in them considering the cost of admission.

I would bet a fair number of them are just 'while we're in there' replacements since they're not super expensive (relatively) to replace or upgrade even if it's not needed if you're doing major service. I know one of the Rennlist mega-mile 996TTs said he was on either first or second clutch at like 400k+ miles so it's almost all technique.

My 986's pedals have a lot of stiction on them. It takes an extra bit of force to break the pedal free and push it in further. Most noticeable on the gas pedal and the clutch. It's like there's 100 little detentes along the travel. Would it be safe to use some light lubricant at the hinges to see if the stiction is there? Also, the NSS has such a loud click on this car :/ e: hmm, I scouted out the pedals -- pushing them by hand with the car off doesn't give any sign of stiction. Is there any actuation on the gas pedal for cruise control? For the 986 you should be able to access it from the top under the convertible top access panel. You may be able to get to it removing the cover behind the seats, but it's cramped there so I doubt you'd be able to see much on top of that engine from there.

I just confirmed that cruise control does actuate the accelerator pedal on the 996. I assume it would on a 986 as well

Pros: RMS/IMS have been done, it's mechanically tight except for needing a brake refresh, I slightly prefer the road manners of the C4 to the C2 Cons: chipped paint on all four wheels, beat up center console, worn out handbrake handle and steering wheel, flakey AC display. The interior on my 106k mile Subaru is in better shape than this 40k mile Porsche. I'm thinking of holding out for a 997 [hopefully Targa] once I get marriage and everything else shored up and figured out. Values are fairly stable so other than tax and title you shouldn't lose much testing out 911 ownership barring some expensive failure. The gray interior doesn't wear well so it doesn't indicate abuse, just average use and get more info on the IMS (date/miles since/bearing condition). It's a solid price especially if you can personally check it out but consider having a PPI out by a well-regarded specialist like Rennsport.

No I don't, but the ability to get into the security system and program keys and poo poo is pretty drat appealing. Besides, I'm pretty drat sure I could sell it for what I paid afterwards due to the rarity of finding them in the aftermarket.
