my building was making the bike room larger this past weekend and switching from key to a keycard lock, im excited to see what it looks like on Monday (though it's supposed to rain all week so I guess I'll take the train that also is still only a 20 minute commute :sigh: what a bother)

my building put in a room like that last summer, it's really nice to have. you used to have to haul your bike up on the elevator. they even included a little bike tune-up station. like one of these: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-10maKcJx1Xo/UYGAD9bUt3I/AAAAAAAAAHM/acsyuKS0D9o/s1600/closeupdero.JPG

having a personal or company vehicle is essential when you have to transport tools or other materials to and from a job site and most real companies accommodate this as part of business expenses

but given that we're not talking about real jobs here, i'm okay with not allowing programmers to have personal vehicles for any reason as their work is non-essential (or actively harmful)

10k on a bike should take you 20 minutes at a normal pace. How out of shape are you that you would rather sit in a car?

he could also live in an unbikeable hell, i'm theoretically a bikeable distance from stuff but the lowest traffic road I have is still a 60mph road with no shoulder. i'd feel more comfortable biking if it weren't already lined with 3 ghost bikes in one two mile stretch.

yeah don't bike on us roads because they're massive, people speed well in excess of the high speed limits, everyone is texting and driving, and the barrier to getting a drivers license is laughably low

a nice two lane new zealand and road is a different story

speed limits are arbitrarily set for monetary gain and have no relation to safety. the road was built with a specific speed in mind and drivers will naturally drive at that speed. bicycles are not capable of traveling at safe speeds with normal traffic and thus have no business on the road.

cars are useful transportation and bicycles are not. the problem is that even if you were to design slow "roads" for bicycles now you're in the same range as pedestrians. since pedestrians outnumber bicycles they would get priority on any such mixed use paths. and in most cases you don't really have a lot of room for all of this so the priority would go to paths and roadways pedestrians and cars.

Shaggar

I think a better question is why do you think bicycles should be allowed on the roads when they clearly cannot be operated safely?

I think the lesson should be to peel back car usage in non-ideal circumstances, meaning any trip that is A) Not long distance, and B) not mandated via a health concern or handicap.

I don't think "gently caress bikes" is the lesson you should take from the modern city experience, if anything it should be "gently caress cars." lol at this happening in America, however.

Shaggar posted:

They can be operated safely, just not in a context of cars monopolizing all available space and roadway because they were there first. Your premise is that cars must be the predominant form of transport, and I disagree with that assessment.

bicycles wouldn't be a replacement for cars in cities though. subway/elevated rail is the only proper replacement.

the posted limit for bikes sharing a travel lane on a roadway is supposed to be 35mph btw

above that it's super unsafe w/o dedicated bike lanes at a minimum and prolly illegal in your locality
