Honestly, you should go with a full size or bite the bullet and run a 3-layer board with 48 keys.

I thought about learning colemak but it's superficially different than dvorak. You get:

1) A 2nd backspace, which is irrelevant on a kinesis / dipswitchable on a HHKB / bindable in an OS
2) copy / cut / paste shortcut "compatibility", which is a crutch you might find useful in the first months of learning

For this you trade:

1) vowels are scattered across the board which loses dvorak's alternating left/right patterns
2) Worse odds of a computer or keyboard being compatible with it

Overall: 100x better than the qwerty, but I think dvorak makes more sense for me

yeah i dried it out and it was working perfectly for hours (the spill wasnt even bad...) but now its freaking out periodically

actually im canceling the order and ill see what happens tomorrow since i just realized i still have my old keyboard and can use that if this stops working

the first sign I had of a problem was calc.exe spontaneously opening which was alarming because I read too many security blogs

Something might have congealed somewhere under the pcb, try using some compressed air or alcohol to clear it out and dry it out some more

this

time to strip it down and wipe literally everything with rubbing alcohol

there's a bunch of exposed solder points in there so you probably have some crap in there creating a short

there's no repeatable, empirical difference between layouts

the reason dvorak (or colemak) is so much faster than qwerty is that you grew up with bad habits on qwerty. switching to any new layout, even a random layout, allows you to learn touch-typing for the first time. this implies huge speed improvements.

now that you are already accustomed to touch-typing on dvorak, you will not see any improvement from changing to another layout. you already got the big win from the touch-typing.

--

in the early 20th century when vendors were having bake-offs, trained typists typed fastest on qwerty. not because qwerty was good or bad, but because qwerty-using manufacturers happened to make the best typewriters. (and those typists had no lovely hunt and peck habits to unlearn)

if they had adopted dvorak instead, there would be nerds learning qwerty or colemak or something and raving about their speed improvements

I learned really good habits with qwerty; my school put us through 3 years of typing classes and 7 of computer classes, and they made you use keyboard covers and policed for bad habits. Dvorak isn't faster, it's more comfortable and less strenuous. You might as well go around evangelizing that mechanical switches don't make you a faster typist so why bother.

edit; also I'm slower at dvorak. The day I started I took this test with qwerty and my first score was 97wpm: http://typing-speed-test.aoeu.eu/?lang=en My dvorak score today on the first go was 76.
