gently caress that grandpa. For a Texan I'm probably on the faaaaaaaaar far left in terms of wanting sensible gun control and a ban on guns that are literally engineered to kill the most humans as efficiently as possible, but home invasion horror stories are my kryptonite so I have absolutely no problem with these 3 children now being in the ground. They absolutely deserved what they got.

Grandpa remembers when the kid was 10 years old he was normal and good, and then he got to the age where hanging out with grandparents isn't cool anymore, so grandpa didn't see him much. Now the kid you bounced on your knee just a few years ago is dead, accused of being a violent criminal, and that's just not the little Billy you knew.

Speaking of Down Under http://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2017-04-06/apple-taken-to-court-by-accc-over-alleged-consumer-misrepresent/8421346 Apple are being sued by Australian protection because they hosed up peoples' iphones with bad software updates, then refused to fix them under warranty because those people had got their cracked screens fixed by non-Apple repairers. That kind of crap is illegal under Australian consumer law, and you can't EULA your way out of it, so the government are going after them. Similar kind of thing to how they went after Valve for not allowing refunds on Steam, and EBay for forcing purchasers to use PayPal.

I'd say it's personally saved me more than $2000 in refunds and repairs I wouldn't have gotten away with if I hadn't known my rights under the ACL. Just last month my Dad used it to get a $500 solenoid replaced on his Peugeot for free after the dealer tried to tell him the warranty wouldn't cover it. New ACL is gonna cause a LOT of butthurt for retailers! Now any and all retailers registered in Aus HAVE to bow down to any and all refund depands within 30 or 60 days (I cannot honestly remeber which it is). Also all warranty claims are to be processed through the retailer. There's also a two week grace period where the buyer can say 'na I don't like it' no questions asked. I have this info only from being shown an email by the ACCC that was sent to my friend whose whole job is warranty repair agent for a huge number of brands. When it kicks in - if you work in retail get ready to an even more aggressive bunch of cuntstermers that used to yell "ACL!". Now you HAVE to take the loss. The best bit: Manufacturers can go 'yeah, no it's your problem Mr Retailer!'

The Checkout is so informative about the ways that retailers would try to get ahead. Humphreys does have a valid point that there's a bit of a power imbalance now. Retailers are just kinda hosed with the 2 weeks refund deal.

Retailers are just kinda hosed with the 2 weeks refund deal. I used to work retail and most of those ACL things arent or wont be taught to those on the floor cos the manager says they are 'bullshit'. Later my schooling landed me a job as the local Warranty Agent for Marantz (great company to work for) and wow the new laws would make that job a lot easier for me if I still was one. One or two single entries of complaints (the official retailers) would be amazing and no cold calling in warranty claims (that used to have to be routed through Marantz Corporate). I should get back into the game now my life would be less filled with calls all day only to tell the customer to call corporate to lodge the claim. Then I get claim when they get around to it and THEN i call the customer to pick up the amp. I was terrible at retail according to my boss because I would never push the extended warranty bullshit cos I knew it was bullshit. NEVER get extended warranty, it's worse than dealing with your insurance company. At this point in my life I am really getting into the whole 'right to repair' stuff going on in the USA and eagerly hoping we get the same over here. I have been out of the industry for many years and into industrial SCADA but I still have access to exploded views and technical docs for a lot of the major brands due to a monthly subscription that hasn't lapsed. If I had PMs I would help who I could here with hookups to fix their own poo poo. The only thing I can do at the moment is maybe setup an ebay auction hoping someone will buy the manuals for my access costs plus ebay+paypal fees. I am lazy though and it's most likely illegal as gently caress according so whatever EULA I never read.
