It's difficult to envision a scenario in which the norks get slapped in a limited strike against CC&C/nuke infrastructure without a response. They're so balls deep in their own jingo, to take a hit without lashing out again would cause a loss of Face, and a system held up by violence and fear can not take too much of that. People might think the government were weak and lose their fear of it, and North Korea can turn very, very, very ugly the moment people stop being afraid of the government. Or beautiful, if you purr like a cat at the thought of well-fed elite cadre corpses hanging from every lighpole in Pyongyang.

A Russian computer programmer, Pyotr [Peter] Levashov, has been arrested in the Spanish city of Barcelona, a spokesman for the Russian embassy in Madrid said on Sunday.

It was unclear why Levashov was arrested. The embassy spokesman declined to give details for his arrest, and Spanish police and the interior ministry were not available for comment on Sunday.

Russian television station RT reported that Levashov was arrested under a U.S. international arrest warrant and was suspected of being involved in hacking attacks linked to alleged interference in last year's U.S. election.

Peter Carr, a spokesman for the U.S. Justice Department’s criminal division, said: "The U.S. case remains under seal, so we have no information to provide at this time."

The criminal division is separate from the national security division, which is responsible for investigating state-sponsored cyber crimes.

A U.S. Department of Justice official said it was a criminal matter without an apparent national security connection.

Spanish authorities notified the Russian embassy of Levashov's arrest on Friday, the embassy spokesman said.

The U.S. government has formally accused Russia of hacking Democratic Party emails to help the campaign of Republican President Donald Trump. The U.S. Congress is also examining links between Russia and Trump during the election campaign.

Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, have repeatedly denied that Russia tried to influence the election.

And now for something completely different
Speaking of elections, we had municipal elections last night that ended up being a complete shitfest for the anti-EU far right populists, while the liberal and leftist parties saw some pretty rad gains:

quote:

The populist Finns Party has seen its support drop in local elections on Sunday, with the party polling just 8.3 percent in initial results forecasts. That's well down on the 17.7 percent and the 12.3 percent it drew in the 2015 parliamentary election and the 2012 local elections respectively. Yle's election forecast put the National Coalition Party in the lead, with the Greens posting the biggest gains.

But the much of the night belonged to the Greens and the Left Alliance, which increased their share of the vote to 12.4 and 8.8 percent respectively.

For the Greens the result meant an increase of 4.2 percentage-points over its previous election performance. "You can trust us, we are as good as our word," said outgoing Greens chair Ville Niinistö as he arrived at the party's victory party at Helsinki's Tavastia Club.

"Thank you, thank you," the crowd of supporters chanted.

"Finns are fed up of politicians saying that you have to sacrifice," Niinistö told the crowd. He later told Yle that the result shows that voters were ready for more humane reforms that stressed investment in green technologies and education as an alternative to austerity.

The Left Alliance also celebrated an election rush of nearly a full percentage point over the last election to poll 8.8 percent support. Party leader Li Andersson said that the group's place in opposition helped boost the election outcome.

"We've had a clear policy to criticise the government for spending cuts and tax policies that increase inequality," Andersson told Yle.

She pointed out that social and health care reform has also been an important theme for the Left. She added that she hoped that government would not be more prepared to listen to criticism of its plans.

Is it too much to hope that we'll see a wholesale world-wide rejection of ultranationalism in the next year or two? Almost none of the far right parties in the EU have won any seats in Parliament, and except for Trump and Brexit it seems like people just aren't responding to the message of the far-right.

This is the best part:

"Though the White House continues to push for progress on stalled health care legislation, there are only five legislative days remaining once Congress returns from a two-week spring break. Plus, another deadline looms: Trump and the Republican-controlled Congress must still pass a bill before April 28 to keep the government running.

If they fail, a shutdown would begin on Trump’s 100thday in office."

The linked article ends with a good point: Trump is worried about his "first 100 days" image, and the communications shop was meeting to formulate a coherent strategy. However, he must manage to pass the financial bill before then, otherwise the government shutdown happens on his 100th day.

Staffers, including counselor Kellyanne Conway, were broken into three groups, complete with whiteboards, markers and giant butcher-block-type paper to brainstorm lists of early successes. One group worked in the hallway.

“It made me feel like I was back in 5th grade,” complained another White House aide who was there. “That’s the best way I could describe it.”

Cool, so it's basically like my university club on retreats that we treat so seriously that we spend the majority of the weekend hung over, and blow our budget on food & booze so the only thing we're left with for presentations is a broken easel, some markers and recycled paper sheets.

A well-run show.
