I gotta say it's pretty hilarious watching all the praise for a movie which is about as Generic Anime as it possibly gets, from people whose reaction to anime otherwise is most likely "ew, icky"

I remember really liking The Place Promised In Our Early Days when it first came out (I stalked Blockbuster for weeks around the time that came out), but I haven't watched the more popular stuff. That said, the only anime I watch these days are Ghibli, Kon, and Evangelion because I got all anime-ed out when I was 14

Anyway, I enjoy the movie but I think the biggest issue is that most kids would find Paprika really boring. Those last ten minutes sure are something though.

Paprika has enough action throughout that I think kids would be entertained up it.

However, it also has nudity and lots of on screen death so you probably want to wait until at least late middle school to show it to them.

I rarely comment here but I'll do it to play the top ten game. In no order, because I couldn't possibly decide that much:

The Lion King
The Iron Giant
Cats Don't Dance
The Last Unicorn
Zootopia
Tangled
El Dorado
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Cars
The Incredibles

I used to ADORE Balto too but I don't know how much of that would be childhood nostalgia and how much it holds up, so I'd have to rewatch it.

Realistically we could do a sort of movie club? If not a specific stream time etc, we could easily pick a movie, watch it within a time-frame and schedule a chat about it? I'd be up for that!

Add Spirit of the Cimarron to my list of movies I absolutely adored but might not hold up so well.

hiroyuki imaishi is infinitely superior. another auteur anime director, his animation style is the opposite, very appealing and IMO basically the best possible rendition of the aesthetic style of anime in animation and also the truest to its original roots in the 1960s and 70s. also basically all porno, but with him they're not children and have huge T&A

I agree that Imaishi is probably better but I don't think Shinbo is actually a pedo? The Monogatari series is horrible because NisioisiN, the writer of the books, is a huge pedo, but as far as I know everything Shinbo's done without his involvement has been fine (Madoka didn't have any pedo poo poo at all and I don't remember there being any in Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei).

I really liked Madoka. The only even-close-to-questionable content in it I can think of was towards the end, but it's only questionable if you consider Sailor Moon to be nude during her transformation scene. I considered the outlined form to be representative of the soul, not actually naked. Is there something else I missed?

God, the witch labyrinths and the silhouette fight in Madoka were exceptional. :allears:

It's been years since I've seen the former so I'm going off memory. I'm willing to believe you, but I really don't remember anything horrible in it.

And Madoka is almost entirely non-objectionable. Even the "graphic violence" is... literally two short scenes in the entire run, one of which is mostly offscreen and the other of which is in silhouette. I also don't have the first clue what "bondage shot" is in the OP.

e: that said, nobody was putting it forth as especially family-friendly, either; it's a 12 in the UK and that sounds about right. I just sort of take issue with the idea that it's directed by a pedophile, because if anything, it almost seems the polar opposite given how non-sexual of a show it is.

Yeah, I'm not sure what the bondage thing is. (And when we're talking about objectional material in Japanese stuff, I immediately think sex.) I agree with Lord of Booty, the violence was pretty tastefully handled.

But Watership Down is my favorite animated movie. :v:

If I ever show madoka to anyone I'm video editing the op out, possibly replacing it with bewildering random crap.

The op was to pretend the show was something it wasn't and it's not really part of it proper.

wait lol is this serious? it's on screen for like a second and a half, isnt actually that bad, and is very clearly meant as a joke.

that's a weak-rear end "awkward showing anime to normies" story if i've ever heard one. there's all sorts of horrifying porn that a clueless nerd could show to unsuspecting female peers, way beyond a moderately-distasteful joke that's on screen for two seconds
