Grease pencils you still have to dispose of the extra bits which were a fire hazard.  Although the Soviets apparently did use them early on.

Just a wedge of something absorbent soaked in ink, so I'd imagine they work perfectly well. The smell would drive you ad/get you high as gently caress in a recycled atmosphere, so I'd recommend against taking them into space.
