I'm trying to hammer out a rendering strategy for my portfolio. My art has always been exploratory and freeform, so as far as style goes I don't really have one. I might be getting close, I just can't figure out how to work some good outlines into this without turning it back into lineart. Any suggestions? Hey I just wanted to update the thread with what I came up with. I finally noticed I was using a bright background which limited my options for using brighter colors for outlines. So I put a darker background behind the object and used an underglow to define the underside of the contours.

Those colors are wonderful, though they'll definitely pop once you get a proper background in. Completely done with the reference sheet. couldn't bring myself to leave the head and arms out of the back view.

Sucks to lose layers but I think it forces you to be a much better painter. Can you tell me how you use the smudge brush? Do you modify the brush in some way or use the defaults? Anthony Jones had a custom smudge brush I loved years ago but I have never been able to replicate the results and I know it was something relatively simple. Right now my photoshop painting looks like bad marker drawings because there isn't enough blending.

sigma 6 posted:Sucks to lose layers but I think it forces you to be a much better painter. Try as hard as you can to not use smudge as a crutch, like it's a totally legitimate tool and everything especially if you have a specific type of texture you want to emulate but if you can do >75% of your blending with your brushstrokes that will be much better for your painting skills/speed and also keeping some of the expressiveness of your hand movements in the final piece. I mostly only use smudge on large areas of background where I don't have enough ram to run the 900 pixel wide oil brush it would take to cover it smoothly

Yeah I agree, i dislike smudge and sometimes I lose track of it and everything becomes smeared. It's a very good reminder to only use smudge for an intended result.

Trying to figure out a good way to render feathers and I should probably just look at references. I'm also trying to find the right settings for my display. Got this laptop yesterday and there are like three different programs adding their controls to the display colors: The laptop manufacturer's utility, Intel's color management utility, and the Windows 10 adjustment. To check colors I'm uploading them to imgur and then viewing them on another computer.

Oh is it a monitor calibration tool, like a physical thing and not a program I'm not too worried about it. I'm going to rig one of my Retina displays to this and then using Apple RGB makes it perfect.

I think I've worked out the levels and separated this into a manageable layer system. This has to get finished, like soon and I'm looking forward to it.
