The revisionist historian Sheila Fitzpatrick has a review up at the London Review of Books of some of the major recent histories of the Russian Revolution. It gives a useful primer on late Cold War and current Soviet historiography.

Under review:

this makes me at once less and more interested in the mieville book. my usual preference in history is analytic and social but a narrative treatment could be good for a newcomer to soviet history like me as a way of fixing characters and events in the mind. it usually takes me a few passes and perspectives on a given topic before i can remember how all the parts fit together after closing the book.

but another takeaway is the reminder that everything written from 1991 to the mid-2000s and beyond was written under conditions of neoliberal triumph that not long before would have seemed absurd. not only is it biased by its ideological context, that context changed a huge amount in a short time as assumed verities collapsed.

the left remains on the back foot but despair is unacceptable. we haven't the empirical license for it.

some of those look good, but they all are focused on the revolution; what's a good introductory soviet history from inception to collapse?

*eta: mccaine's list, extensive though it is, has only one full general history, the soviet century, but from the reviews it appears to be a collection of topical overviews rather than framed in a narrative format; good, perhaps, but probably not the best starting point

You really are a louse...

Well if you can only roleplay people with ideologies that never killed anyone, you're basically restricted to anarcho-sydicalist (IWW organizer/scab) or communalist (Murray Bookchin/deep ecologist) roleplay.
