i get that we allow one person to decide to nuke or not because time is of the essence if we're being attacked but i kinda think requiring two or three people to nuke would be better because i'd prefer to err on the side of not nuking in a senile or rage-induced moment. i mean, even during a normal presidency, there are all sorts of illnesses and diseases that can cause your behavior to radically change and i don't want a president who ate some bad meat to murder the earth.

over a long enough timeline that sort of thing is inevitable too

idk the odds of going suddenly so crazy/delirious you launch nukes but the odds have to rise w age and poor health so if we keep electing fat old af rich dudes we're taking decks outta the shoe before dealing the hand and anteing up global civilization, yknow????

Honestly, it's mostly pretty boring. Lots of maintenance and exercises. The missile combat crews are overworked because the mission is chronically understaffed these days. In addition, you're constantly being evaluated and trained, so you pretty much spend about half of your month on alert, about 10 days training or testing, and a handful of days off. For four years or so.

You'll get snowed in quite a bit, which means your alert shifts can get extended for multiple days. Always fun - particularly when the emergency valves cutting the launch center shut off and you start accruing sewage underneath the platform the crew works on. I did once have a deputy that was kind of a CHUD - he pretty quickly gained a reputation for jerking off to anime on swing shift. So I would make it a policy to get out of the rack every few hours when I was on rest to force him to abstain.

It's a weird life. Like I said, there are a bunch of pretty decent, motivated people in the business. At the same time, you're dedicated to a completely insane (and, in many ways, outmoded) mission, that still has to be done. It can mess with your head pretty badly. I read Catch-22 and Man Without a Country over the course of a few alerts and had to rethink my life.

also they gotta assume that matter how well trained and screened a certain fraction of the launchin folks will fail to comply w orders just by human nature, and factor that into the launch scenarios alongside mechanical errors and so on

what if you just did away with First class and Coach all together and just had business class?

I guess that would price some people out. Probably not optimal just wondering the math

The average person cannot afford half of the price of a traditional business class ticket. It wouldn't work.

Actually, British airlines recently went to a modular system where all of their A320s for basic inter-European flights have all the same seats, and the better class has metal trays blocking the center seat out. They can install the trays and class dividing curtains on the fly based on demand.

From the perspective of someone flying in the better class it sucked rear end because I'm tall and so I didn't really have any more leg space, and I couldn't sit next to the person I was traveling with because of the center seat being blocked. It's also kinda peak capitalism to see the empty seats blocked off like that lmao. Sure I got good food and service but those aren't my personal reasons for hoarding miles to be able to upgrade myself.
