FredMSloniker posted:So, since more Star Trek is evidently not coming out soon, if ever, what other shows might scratch the TOS itch for me? And by that, I don't mean aping the appearance of a 60s TV show, but something where exploring space is an adventure, not (for instance) a desperate struggle for survival or just another way to make a buck. The whole 'boldly go' mission statement. It doesn't necessarily have to be airing right now, or even recently, and web content is also acceptable. If you can deal with highly stylized anime, consider the older Captain Harlock series. The animation can be a bit rough sometimes, but on the other hand it doesn't have the annoying fanservice bullshit of newer series and the soundtrack is seriously boss.

Seaquest is one of those shows I remember liking when I was young, but I am afraid to watch again for fear it will ruin my fragile, dumbly innocent memories of it.

Token Posh-Sounding British Guy was an indispensable component of every 90s genre show (e.g. Stewart in TNG, Siddig in DS9, John Rhys-Davies in Sliders, Giles in Buffy etc.) but seaQuest gave things an unusual twist by having Token Posh-Sounding British Girl (Stephanie Beacham). Remember when seaQuest had Mark Hamill as a blind astronomer who was actually a fugitive from an alien world? Me neither.

Alright guys, I'm bored and I've decided I'm going to do a Star Trek: Birth of the Federation Let's Play thread. I included a Poll so that anyone who cares to can determine which race I play as. There will be other votes in the future as well. https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3816663 So get in there and vote, if you care to.

Nearly done with the 2nd book of 50 Year Mission, and was it common knowledge that Shatner almost ended up guesting on Enterprise as Mirror Kirk? I don't remember hearing that. Apparently the original plan for the Enterprise Mirror Universe episode was to have the actual NX-01 from our universe end up in a pocket universe where apparently the Tantalus Field from 'Mirror, Mirror' sent people when they seemingly died. So Mirror Kirk is there and he tries to take over the NX-01 and escape. Shatner was onboard but wanted to get paid, and the studio didn't see the point of spending what Shatner wanted when the show was already wrapping up its run.

OK, so given that Worf was a colonel by the time of Star Trek VI, he'll probably be fresh out of Klingon law school or something during this series.

Why can't Worf just go away? If there's "My son has no honor, he spends his days studying laws instead of the ways of Kahless" in Discovery, I'm done. He's the Hillary Clinton of Star Trek.

A hundred years ago the translator was able to figure out the language of a horny cloud entity with no brain and a biology totally unlike our own in like 5 minutes, but seven years of church-Bajoran spoken on the station every Sunday morning and nothing?

Speaking of: here's my counter-infiltration plan for Star Trek. How about you have the computer tell you the source language when your translator is activated. You call up the bridge to talk to the Vorta in charge of the ship: if the answer comes back in Bajoran, maybe a little pop-up should appear saying "This message was translated from an unexpected language: Bajoran. Language expected was Dominionese. Press to dismiss." That would solve so many problems.

And speaking of actresses looking better in uniform, Jeri Ryan I don't understand the embarrassing catsuit-n-high-heels fetish of Star Trek producers. But you had to say it in the Jem'Hadar native language, which no outsider ever heard because they're engineered to just learn and use the languages of whatever aliens they interact with.
