I think the problem was very much that they tried to serve both the traditional game and the my-first-programming exercise equally, and it's real hard to pull that off over a full game. Supposedly a lot of the later-game puzzles got really obtuse because they weren't about logic or programming, just fiddling with the numbers to find the right combo or whatever. IMO they should have made their zelda-clone and had the hacking more as the way to totally gently caress with the game. Leave more room for creative solutions. It's a difficult thing to do though.
