I like that MONARCH seems to be made of people who were laughed out of academia/gov't for their insane theories and whoever happened to survive running into a monster. edit: at least 3/4 of every team was recruited against their will

Really liked this movie. Sure, it has its flaws, but overall its a great monster movie that is shot beautifully (in my opinion) and really made Kong himself really cool. The shots of him standing with sunsets or fire behind him looked awesome and they nailed the whole 'godlike protector of the island vibe'. Specific cool stuff: - giant water buffalos - giant spider was gross and made me feel squirmy. - chill tree-insect. - Crazy ww2 survivor man was a breath of fresh air. - sam jackson i guess, especially when he said 'bitch, please'. - fps weapon shots. - Kong's easly intro by throwing a tree into the chopper before loving them all up. - film looked gorgeous.. Weird/not good - English male lead guy was boring as hell. He didnt deserve to get the cool samurai gasmask shot. - when they were on the river and had loads of those birds coming at them, four took one dude and then they all suddenly disappeared. Felt a little sudden and out of nowhere. - photographer lady was fine but also not particularly interesting. .

Haven't read anything about this movie after watching the trailers, which looked pretty good imo. Is it worth seeing at the cinema or can I wait it out?

I sat a little closer than I usually do when I saw this and things like the full-height shot of Kong against the rising sun were awesome.

So Kong and Godzilla are going to team up against King Ghidorah in Godzilla vs. Kong, right?

It's really a greatest hits of Hollywood movies about Vietnam (especially Apocalypse Now) with monsters shamelessly doodled all over it. Samuel L. Jackson has tons of napalm and no fucks left to give, John Goodman and John C. Reilly are cool and good too. Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson are just sort of there being generic good looking white people in a Hollywood movie, but it's fine, they're not actively annoying or anything and even do some cool poo poo sometimes.

The scenes where Hiddleston is suddenly an action hero are so jarring because he basically does nothing for 80% of the movie.

Yeah it feels super clumsy and unearned in that scene. I feel like they could've simply removed or reduced the two "leads" and it wouldn't particularly damage the film. But, I guess hollywood needs to have two very attractive leads who might kiss in every single movie.

Perhaps they were establishing those characters so they could carry across to some of the other films? If not then yeah, apart from "Needs attractive leads with sexual tension" I don't know why they were written in. I guess maybe they could have established some sexual tension between Samuel L Jackson and John Goodman and I'm 100% those guys would have been up for that but I guess the audience isn't ready for that quite yet. Edit: the entire point of having a Sexy Female Lead in a King Kong movie has always been to complete the triangle between the Courageous Male Lead and Kong but I guess they felt they'd take this film in a different direction and have Kong battle Some Other Guy for dominance and territory. I'm not certain they were written with a view to be carried across to other films - next time Kong appears will be v. Godzilla and that's presumably set in around 2020, making those characters very, very old when that happens.

Mason weaponized an Imco Triplex and was a perfectly decent character even outside that great moment. Conrad was also a decent character if one remembers that both were supporting cast. Packard and Marlow were the definite leads so I'm not sure why people are complaining that secondary roles weren't as prominent.

Snowglobe of Doom posted:It felt like the scriptwriters forgot his character was in the movie, especially since he just steps in and takes a weapon from someone else. "Hey we established that this is your specialty weapon but watch me go!" You have it backwards. Reilly was not well-trained with the sword; he simply respected the cultural significance of it. Hiddleston, on the other hand, was actually very skilled with bladed weapons (as established early-on, in the barfight scene). The point of passing the sword, like Larson using Hiddleston's lighter, is that they work as a team. The complaints that the two characters don't do anything are misguided, because Larson spends the whole film carefully observing events - which eventually leads to her decision to give up pacifism. Larson, on the other hand, gives Hiddleston a cause he considers worth fighting for. That the film ends with the production of a couple, and they now work to dupe the population, is the Snyderesque joke. "I really do like movies that ride that fine line, the razor’s edge between parody and supporting the fake movie part of the movie."

He theoretically at least has some kind of specialty, but he doesn't really ever use it, and just spends most of the movie looking pretty. There's even a pretty easy to miss joke, that he gets lost before the big climactic battle, even though he's the wilderness survival expert. It's a different take that it's a man playing a role that traditionally would be a female character, but I think it trends towards being a pretty useless character regardless of the gender roles.
