Lady Galaga posted:sup pubic hair compatibility is VERY important for a successful relationship quote:白虎 (báihǔ). Literally "white tiger." In ancient times báihǔ meant a woman with no pubic hair, shunned by matchmakers because it was believed that such a woman would bring misfortune or even death to her husband. The male equivalent is 青龙 (qīnglong), literally "green dragon," meaning a man without pubic hair, also superstitiously believed to bring trouble or death to his wife.

Haier posted:At this point I troll her every time she sends me a message, and somehow this makes her more interested in me. It's not even like "negging," it's simply telling her she's retarded for the way she thinks. She's claiming I am a good friend and I see through all the bullshit. I don't even know what that means. I met her once for a walk like 3-4+ months ago because she lives one street over from me, and she messages me like 5 nights a week asking for sex or to take a walk together, and I have denied her every single time. During the last holiday, she said her roommates were gone and she begged me to go to her room. I was already outside, so I sent her my location from inside her building, and then told her I was going home, and she sent me multiple videos of her making shadow puppets. Löl. Will it all fall apart once you say yes?

What kind of person sends their kid across the world and just expect other people to pay for them?

There are a ton of expectations in Korean society that have to be followed or else you are a huge disgrace. Sending kids to live overseas with aunts/uncles is a really common one, and if you decline then you're losing a ton of face and causing the whole family to lose face as well. Even when Korean family members grow up in the US and have never been to Korea and have very, very limited contact with their family back in the old country, it's still expected that they "take one for the team".

quote:Silk inner lining of a scholar's garment with many texts drawn from Chinese classics, Qing dynasty, China, second half of 18th century. A large cream coloured silk garment lining panel covered with numerous characters finely written in black and red ink of famous classical texts and commentaries. Each passage is written in black ink with a heading in red ink stating from where the quotation or text comes. This item is a typical so-called 'cheat's handkerchief' used to assist the candidate in his attempt to pass the imperial exam into the mandarinate. As only about 5% passed the exam, cheating was comparatively frequent but if caught was a serious offence which would undoubtedly result in a lifelong ban on retaking. 5,000 years

Pretty much this. I can't count the number of times where we had cousins crashing at our house for a few months, or the times my parents left me and my sisters with a relative in Korea for multiple months. It just seems normal that you can drop your kids off at a relatives and they be treated like one of the family.

God drat I'm happy to come from a pretty solidly waspy culture with no guilt or face based expectations to bend over backwards for freeloading relatives I barely know or actively dislike. I'll airbnb or rent an apartment when I visit your country, you can do the same with you visit mine and no one's toes are stepped on that way. I mean unless we actually do get along and feel comfortable hosting each other, that's good. But having the demand or expectation for it isn't good.

I don't have experience with Chinese living in China but I do have experience with Chinese nationalists living in the West and it's like talking to a wall. Especially if it's online and they can easily find some article about an idiot Englishman sending his kids to school in Shanghai to prepare them for The Chinese Century

I've had this explained to me that the west actually provides a much worse actual education because the tests are easier and western education is lazy and doesn't involve 26 hour a day rote memorization, but due to racism and the west temporarily having too much clout in the world getting a western education carries more prestige. The west and it's education isn't better, it's in fact worse, but due to imperialism and racism a western degree opens more doors so that's the only reason!! It's NOT better and one day (2020??) people from all over the world will more correct respect asian degrees. Westerners don't go to China/Asia for school because they are too lazy and stupid, will fail our much stricter and harder system.

My Chinese-American roommate in college had his cousin sent from Taiwan to stay with us for a couple of weeks. He didn't know the guy at all - had only met him a couple of times at weddings or something. I had my own room and wasn't put out by it or anything. After he left, my roommate asked if I noticed that he reacted to me a bit weirdly. I'm a white dude. I noticed that he was a bit withdrawn, but chalked it up to not knowing us, being in a different country, and having an imperfect grasp of English. He then confessed that he told his cousin that I was mentally retarded and had a severe temper, and that he should tread lightly around me. It was a good prank.
