I just happened to rewatch that last week in a double feature with the original. I still remember seeing it in theaters as a teen and thinking "No, they wouldn't have a zombie baby..." Really reminded me to what depths of horror Snyder can go.

Did he get back to you? He replied to a MySpace message I sent him, and gave me some kind words on a really ugly Grant Grant action figure I tried to make when I was 14. He became my favorite director after that.

Megaman's Jockstrap posted:"Why does the movie keep cutting to these weird scenes when the girl starts dancing?" asks a complete idiot. I just tried to absorb this perfect visual story, which is basically a lovely music video that relies entirely on hackneyed visual cliches for any of its success and uh: -Did she shoot her sister? That would be physically impossible unless the sister climbed up on a box and also moved into an entirely different location. Or the bullet made a hard right turn I guess? Did it ricochet? There's no indication it ricocheted, the shot of the pipe looks like it went through the back wall of the closet and the pipe, which is nowhere near the sister as far as I can tell. -Why show gas leaking and a burning bulb and then immediately forget about them? -If she didn't shoot her sister, is he a speed rapist? He's fully clothed and standing in the doorway when she arrives with the gun, despite the fact that it would take like, a minute tops to run back up the stairs and grab it. -Why did he shoot that shot from the perspective of the door, are we sympathizing with the door? -Is her sister dead? She touched her arm and came away with blood, despite there being no blood anywhere on the sister. Did she shoot her sister in the arm and somehow kill her? Or did the father like, gently caress her to death? Is her action and the location of the blood so poorly conveyed because he's tastefully trying to convey that the father hosed her to death? Her sister literally never shows up again, so I guess she's dead? I literally can't make sense of what happened to the sister in that scene and I just tried to watch it about a dozen times. That's the most coherent scene in the movie. Edit: I just tried to look up the answer and each of the four summaries I looked at has a different explanation of what happens in that scene to end with her sister dead, so that's some perfect visual storytelling. Sucker Punch is a bunch of ridiculous video game cutscenes interspersed with a horrific tale of abuse disguised as some sort of feminist statement that tries to shame you for enjoying the video game cutscenes but ends up just insulting you for attempting to watch the film. But at least he tried to do something interesting instead of just leaning on religious imagery.

It's not about shaming you for "enjoying" them - the fantasy sequences are explicitly the fantasies of the sex slaves. They are not examples of exploitation, but of the appropriation of exploitative media by the oppressed. It's not shameful to enjoy blaxploitation movies. But the fantasies at best serve as motivation for and at worst distractions from direct action against oppression. The movie is cautionary, but ambiguous.

I think it's more like it's commenting on the nature of those video game cutscenes, I didn't feel shamed. The whole end message is "female solidarity against The Institution, literally sacrifice yourself to push your sisters forward" and I don't consider that an insult (it's a lovely message though). But you also very obviously despise Snyder so let's not pretend you're going to interpret anything he does as anything less than a massive failure and grave insult to your sense of propriety. Edit: There's no doubt that Snyder is obsessed with people eating poo poo so that others can survive, he goes back to that well again and again and again, from Watchmen to BvS to Sucker Punch to 300.
