I really need to have another go at Fatal Frame II one of these days. I remember it being the scariest of the traditional horror games I've played.

I will fully admit that Silent Hill 1 is the only horror game that I felt was atmospheric enough that I felt that I enjoyed it for the creepy/horror parts of it. By contrast Silent Hill 2 was a game I enjoyed more for the plot, specifically. Sure it had atmosphere but nothing that really came close to the parts in SH1 when you'd first start hearing the sirens or discover the hidden floor in the hospital.

I feel this. I think part of it is how restrained by technology the game; between the limited view distance (with its enticingly vague fog) and the wobbly textures it feels like the game itself is ready to fall apart at the seams. It's such a cool game

I've only played 1, sadly. I was planning on playing the whole series last October but couldn't find a good way to play 2 so I was immediately derailed.

The PSVR will give you access to the best versions of RE7 and Rez Infinite, as well as a decent library by now of 1-2 hour "experiences", plus 3D Blu-Ray watching. I'm not sure I'd say it's worth $400 if you have no prior interest in virtual reality, especially since the dollar per hour of content for it isn't good, but if you do it's worth it for those first two games alone.

There is no official PC compatibility but there's a third party PC driver that probably works.

OG Siren, Siren 2, and Siren:REmake are all better horror games than Silent Hill 2.

SH2 has some better moments and arguably a better story but the Siren series is way more scary and also way more of an actual "game". And the time/day scene selection aspect of OG Siren was so well done. You could literally get stuck in a loop until you, the player, organically figured out that you had to do something different.

People say they like horror games but then when a game actually horrifies them like Lara's deaths in Tomb Raider 2013 or the surgery+bomb scene in Ground Zeroes then they get really defensive and/or angry.

Everything about the vag bomb in Ground Zeroes was a bad idea to put into a video game, or really anything. It was crass and lovely and even from Kojima, I'd expect better.

I think it toes the line (unsuccessfully) between being disgusting in a way that fits the story, and disgusting mostly to make you go "ew". Making the player go "ew" is fine and imo more games should do that when it's appropriate, but I think it's pretty easy to spot when it's done just for that reason.

A handy rule of thumb is if you step back and find you can't distinguish something you wrote from something written by Mark Millar then you should probably reevaluate things.

Yeah, both those things were excessive exploitation scenes in titles that didn't set the tone for them. Nobody had a problem with gruesome Dead Space 2 deaths because they fit the game. There's a time and place.

I actually like the way The Last of Us handled it by fading to black juuuuust before the gruesome death you knew was coming happened, which to my mind was a lot more effective at creating a sense of unease than a lingering shot of lovingly rendered and detailed impalement.

I can't see any reason to spend even $400 on a PSVR set when like, only RE7 and Rez are doing neat things with VR

VR was marketed as the next big thing but until devs do more with it and the price/gate of PC specs go down, it's nothing more than an extreme luxury item
