Dratinis used to spawn in nests so you could just spend the day at the park and catch like 40 of them. This is where a lot of people got their Dragonite(s). Niantic changed it so they only randomly spawn now, making it significantly harder to get and basically requiring a tracker. That or get lucky with 10k egg hatches.

I got at least 3 Dratini hatches when they made Dratini "common" 10k eggs, but they all ended up under 75% IVs. Give me like 97.5% Nidorans, but go ahead and give me lovely as possible hatched Dratini why don't you. Latest lucky egg spree were all duds when I was hoping for good movesets. Biggest disappointment of all was the Machamp because it got both steel moves when I want a really good fighter against Blisseys.

Yeah, in my city it isn't hard to go Dragonite hunting if you're willing to drive around a bit. Most of them have meddling IVs, but it's a Dragonite, and if it starts with a good CP, IVs don't matter much when you throw it into a gym.

Porygon are rare here, but repeatedly spawn in specific spots even over a longer period of time. This was true both in Amsterdam (water biome) and a mid size Belgian city with just one small river. I found a bunch of them over time, and then during the Valentine event they were pretty common (while Chansey was nowhere to be found). The dex says I got 21 of them in total. That said, I haven't seen any Porygon since gen 2 came out. As for Dratini, I'm lucky to live in an area with lots of water where they are exceptionally common. If I was keeping an eye on a map constantly and wouldn't mind biking around all the time to their spawns, I could get like 10-20 in a few hours in the evening. Even if I don't use a tracker I'll often find one or two on my commute home. I have 13 Dragonite, 1 was caught (not in a water biome, they don't seem to appear there) On the other hand, I only have one Larvitar and it came from an egg... They do not spawn here at all. Same for Chansey/Blissey. They're not even that common in gyms here. Entropist fucked around with this message at 01:32 on Apr 12, 2017 |

Willsun posted:Not if you don't care about being at the bottom of gyms when everyone puts in high CP things. You'll be the first to go when people start shaving you. The gym situation is insane here in Japan. Because there's so few reliably held gyms, you get all the hardcore players shoving their best Pokemon into the same few gyms rather than actually trying to expand and take over new gyms. It's especially bad for my team (Instinct), but it holds true to a lesser extent to all teams. This wouldn't normally be a huge issue except that Dratini are pretty common here -- they're basically an uncommon spawn around rivers and beaches. I was at 0 Dratini candy after powering up a 95% IV DT/O Dragonite, but I'm back up over 200 less than two weeks later without even really trying (thanks, Pinap berries and 10k eggs). As a result, gyms here start at 3150, and that's for the absolute bottom spot. By the end of the month, I expect that'll probably be closer to 3200. Shaving is incredibly common -- I had a 3173 ZH/BS Snorlax and a 3101 P/HB Blissey shaved off a gym today. Differences by as little as 10 CP can separate the top 5 players in a gym. There's no point to powering up anything that's not a high-IV Dragonite or Tyranitar. It's completely hosed and incredibly unfun. I actually pulled the trigger on powering up a 97% IV Dragonite that I previously resisted powering up because it had the worst moveset (SW/HB). I feel especially bad for a guy I know because he powered up a bunch of high IV Snorlaxes, and now the best they can do is the third or fourth spot in the gym. It's actually incredibly counterproductive, too, since "gatekeeper" Pokemon (the things no one wants to have to fight, ie Snorlax and Blissey) are basically no longer gym viable if you want to last more than a day, which weakens gyms since you can now just stack ice attackers (and like one Machamp for enemy Tyranitars) and rip through an enemy gym pretty easily. I really hope the gym rebalancing reworks combat, but also completely rethinks how gyms operate while adding some diversity. The CP system is garbage and so prone to abuse and manipulation that it makes me wonder how Niantic ever thought it was a good idea, even as a placeholder. At the very least they should make it that the Pokemon kicked out of the gym is random instead of always the guy at the bottom. That way the lower level players aren't constantly the ones being excluded from that sweet ten cents a day.

Even picking the most popular team in your town can be troublesome if all the gyms in your area are level 10 and you don't have a method of shaving it down. My girlfriend and I are on opposite teams (I'm valor, she's mystic), so we sometimes shave for each other. I know this is looked down upon in the community, but holy hell there's no other way to get into gyms. At least we aren't running two accounts at the same time!

I was just kidding about casino biomes; I have no idea if that's a thing or not. Didn't you have to buy Porygon at the casino in red/blue for some ungodly sum? Pretty sure I know the answer to this before I ask but I should power up a low IV Zen headbutt/body slam Snorlax before any non-body slam high IV Snorlax of the same level, right?

I would say so, unless that ZH/BS is like 20% or something. Also my wishlist for gym revamp: -remove CP -Turn based -Gym AI can now pick 6 Pokemon from its 10 to try and counter your line up. This should encourage teams to put a diverse range of Pokemon in each gym.

I think the last update had some code about raids, so I wouldn't be surprised if some gyms required co-op, or to catch a legendary it requires several trainers throwing balls or battling.

Depends on the IVs but it's generally better to go for the highest max cp since if you level up a low IV body slam snorlax it will still be near the bottom of the gym and it will get knocked out sooner and your teammates will hate you because it's so hard to train against.

Personally I'd like them to come up with a way so that gyms aren't always the same drat pokemon. I'm tired of only seeing Dragonites, Snorlaxes, Rhydons, Gyrados and Vaporeon there with a sprinkle of Tyranitar and Blissey. Maybe come up with a factor that diversifying your gym makes it stronger.

Maybe a trainer can only have 1 of each species in a gym? Or each gym can only have 1 of each species defending it?

To this day everyone is still just as divided on wanting gyms to be easier or harder to defend. Some people were super happy that training prestige took twice as long in one of the old updates, and then some people want gyms to be harder to take down by having more spots.seiferguy posted:Personally I'd like them to come up with a way so that gyms aren't always the same drat pokemon. I've been saying this forever, but if the gym battling system is gonna be this lovely, why not make all Pokemon have around the same CP? I'm not being sarcastic, I just want it so that people might as well put the flavor of their favorite Pokemon in gyms if they're all so prone to this lovely system of abuse. If people are free to put in diverse selections without worrying about being totally worthless in CP, people would have to change up type advantage a lot more and make the battling system more challenging and not nearly as much brainless tapping.

The former would make it impossible to realistically collect from more then 4 or so gyms at a time, and the latter would make it impossible to hold a gym and would make prestiging them into an absolute waste of time. I dunno what they should do for gym battles, but I do agree the current way it works is poo.
