They should keep making dimensions sized sets though, I love the minifigs+mini build setup.

veni veni veni posted:All these major brands failed so hard trying to capitalize on that Skylanders action. Well, none of the Toys to Life things are doing great; the fad's coming to a close. Skylanders had the advantage of basically being first (there was something called UB Funkeys first, but I never heard of them). But they've been around 6 years now, and the fatigue is setting in. A game every year, and the new figures are incompatible with the previous games (although old figures generally worked in newer games). Disney's advantage was their enormous stable, but they didn't really seem to do enough with it (it was like 75% Marvel and Star Wars). Three games, and the same forward/backwards compatibility issues as Skylanders. Nintendo had the stable and popularity, but they don't really do all that much with Amiibo in their games. However, they aren't necessarily tied to specific games, and may even patch in compatibility (such as with Animal Crossing). Nintendo was helped that until recently, there were never much in the way of good Nintendo toys or figures available outside of Japan. Lego realized that physical Lego and the TT games were absolutely made for each other and it was natural to make Dimensions. Problem is they showed up 4 years into the Toys to Life craze, at a high price point, and with a confusing set of requirements for unlocking things within the game (nearly 100 different abilities spread around the entire line, sometimes requiring a specific set to unlock). It let Lego get some unusual partnerships for stuff they'd probably never consider for full lines, like A-Team, Goonies, or Portal (I still want a large-scale GlaDOS). Playmation was a Disney/Hasbro thing that was mobile-only and meant to get the kids further away from a screen. Always seemed to shelfwarm, and was killed after a year. They all suffered from the problem of collections growing unreasonably large as time goes on, and only Lego avoids the 'no use outside of the game besides looking at them' trap. Dimensions stuff can get mixed into the Lego tub. Speaking of mixing into the Lego tub, I saw this Lego Chess Set at the Lego store today. $55, and 1450 pieces! That's a ridiculously good price:part ratio!

I also think Lego/ Disney faced the problem of there not always being crossover between the people who wanted the toys and the people that wanted the game content. Not to mention Star Wars/marvel probably doesn't have a huge toy appeal with the existing over saturation of better toys from both. Skylanders, along with being the original had a built in expectation that the toys go with the game. There's a bunch of dimension toys I want but I never wanted to pay the premium for the content in a game I'm not going to play.

There's no reason to buy the dimensions toys at full price either because they get massively discounted eventually. I got a bunch of the Benny ones for like $3 a piece at a bargain store.

I own most of the Dimensions content and the most I've paid for any of it was half price. It was massively overproduced.

Lego's really improved their Dragon builds over the last few years. I bought all the first-run Ninjago dragons, and they were pretty good. I haven't really gotten any of the dragons with brick-built heads, so I can't really comment on them, but I just finished building the Elves set 41183 The Goblin King's Evil Dragon, and it's pretty great. Tail and neck are fully ball-jointed, and its wings have two ball joints each, which I think is unique. Unlike the rest in the line, it's bipedal and balances well. Plus it's got a good assortment of yellowish green parts. I'm a little annoyed that I apparently missed buying the set with the purple dragon, which is now out of print and most sellers are at 2x retail already.

I've heard anecdotally that in order to get approval for the Marvel series of Infinity figures, Marvel themselves strong armed the Infinity team to make toys/characters for characters like Iron Fist and Nova and other characters that just didn't sell.

if it's got fairly detailed car and vehicle builds that might work in real life(I.E. not mecha-horses or robo-dragons) it's probably gonna wind up as a City line/set

Has anyone ever seen commentary from lego why baseplates don't get used anymore? Did they find that kids weren't actually building cities anymore, or are they too expensive to include in sets or something? I like that little waterfall in the set.. but it just dumps into nothing. It really deserves a printed baseplate with a river on it.

It seems to have happened with their move away from large specialised moulded pieces, a la Rock Raiders, for presumably the same reasons.

Molded base plates are good BURPs are bad The Time Chasers base set I think has 7 loving BURPs gently caress BURPs.

That mobile lab truck actually looks pretty good. Got some mass to it and looks realistic. Almost reminds me of a smaller scale model team vehicle.

When did City start breaking the 'all cars and trucks are 4 studs wide' rule that was in place for my entire childhood. I gotta say the new City vehicles are mighty nice now that they're usually 6 and sometimes 8. I'm a bit peeved that most of them are still single occupant. You can do side by side with a little bit of effort and the use of offset plates. Two figs can fit perfectly across 5 studs. Add actual Lego car doors or something else that isn't an entire stud wide for the sides of the cabin and it fits like a charm.

While 4 stud vehicles are cute, they really limit what you can do with a build. The new vehicles look way better and have way more variety than they used to.

I'm visiting Minnesota (from Aus) so figured I should probably buy some LEGO while I'm here because it's way cheaper than in Aus. Went to the LEGO store at Mall of America and while it's probably a bit cheaper than in Australia, I can't help but think that there's probably cheaper elsewhere. Does LEGO store usually have more expensive stock than normal toy stores or whatever?

I never could quite place my finger on what makes modern big “exterior“ sets seem so incomplete, but yeah it's definitely the lack of baseplates.

There's nothing quite like laying out all your street plates on the big table in the basement and spending your summer building the most epic city you can imagine. Then your mom gets tired of it and makes you take it apart and put it away.
