Ha, story of my life. Parents immigrated from China to come to the US for its colleges and spent my entire childhood complaining about how easy schooling here is and how if I wasn't so lazy and stupid I'd be able to do math two grades higher without issue. The main way my dad bonded with me was me doing Singapore Math handbooks on the dining room table on the weekends while he checked them over. It had to be Singapore Math since the US math books are to easy!

Of course because American school is so easy not effortlessly getting straight As is seen as a personal failing and you have to intentionally be getting Bs to upset your parents since there's no way even someone as stupid as you couldn't get an A if you were really trying! Then again the Asian kids/parents also had a system where the tests/homeworks from one of the more advanced classes in my high school would be circulated around and everyone would just route memorize the correct numbers to put down for each question. My parents at least had the veneer of getting those so I could "check" my work but then again they didn't beat me or smash my poo poo for getting bad grades so they weren't better than most of my classmates and friends Asian parents.

Even normal people with good educations get weird when sex is introduced because society just doesn't do a good job of normalizing it overall. Now imagine you have all the baggage of the Chinese century plus practically no formal sexual education to speak of. I would say the rarity would be Haier having a normal adult relationship.

quote:

Entire sections of booster rocket were snagged by South Korea’s navy and then scrutinized by international weapons experts for clues about the state of North Korea’s missile program. Along with motor parts and wiring, investigators discerned a pattern. Many key components were foreign-made, acquired from businesses based in China.

The trove “demonstrates the continuing critical importance of high-end, foreign-sourced components” in building the missiles North Korea uses to threaten its neighbors, a U.N. expert team concluded in a report released last month. When U.N. officials contacted the implicated Chinese firms to ask about the parts, the report said, they received only silence.

quote:

Investigators determined that the Unha-3’s frame was indigenously made. But inside the rocket’s shell was an array of electronics, including specialized pressure sensors, transmitters and circuitry. An extensive probe by U.S. and South Korean officials revealed that many of the components had been manufactured in Western countries and shipped to North Korea by Chinese distributors — a finding that was echoed in the United Nations Panel of Experts report made public on March 9.

I agree with this. The crazy here is like the crazy nowhere else, as the idea of a normal relationship here is already considered crazy in most places outside of China. My sample size has been huge, and only a few of them I would consider "normal" with what I am used to in America. It's very much a cultural thing, since the expectations are there even if they claim not to. It's hardwired into their brains.
I would love to read from a white girl about the male versions of the women I meet, because I think that side of the deal has to involve much more cultural bullshit and weirdness. It would complete my cultural studies.

quote:

“The foreigners are never friendly when they see someone Chinese,” says Zhang Chuangdi, one of Gu’s followers in the game. Zhang says he was angered by ANGRYPUG’s comments: “It’s just a game; you shouldn’t mix politics into it. That was definitely behavior aimed at provoking Chinese people.”

The gamer behind ANGRYPUG has continued to play up the incident, launching a video series in which his game avatar wears a red shirt and infiltrates the Red Army to mock the group. Fans can pay $4.99 to subscribe to the channel and receive 19 custom-made virtual stickers, including one that features the “Taiwan No. 1” message.

Meanwhile, the Red Army’s “China No. 1” slogan has been printed on real-life red shirts that sell for 99 yuan ($14) each on Douyu. “When a foreign live-streamer comes after me, it’s actually to kill me,” says Gu, who now has over 8 million followers on Douyu. “But I don’t resent it; I feel happy. He comes to kill me, and my followers come to protect me. It’s such good entertainment.”

Back on the battlefield, the foreign gamer trapped by the Red Army shouts “China No. 1!” in surrender. Alongside a video of the action posted later on Weibo, Gu writes: “Look at the power of the Chinese people!”

Alt Girl For Norge
I really enjoy this thread (please stay unbanned Haier).

I currently work in STEM, lots of international employees. Everyone speaks English.

Every year, the new employees have to arrange a seasonal party.
It's a 50 year old work place tradition, and you obviously come off as a major rear end if you refuse. Last year it was me and a collection of people from around the world.

One girl is Chinese and I recognize her from all the presentations she has held.
We held a meeting with some snacks to discuss this, and the Chinese girl just sits there silently.
At the end of the meeting she exclaims: "I will not help." and leaves. The rest of the group is baffled.

So I go to check up on her and ask her what the problem is.
"I do not have time."
"Don't worry, it's not going to take a lot of time."
"OK."
"OK - so you will join us?"
"Yes I will join you."

So next meeting comes, and Chinese girl is nowhere to be seen. I go to her office to find her, and she is silent. I ask if she's doing okay, and if she remembered the meeting.
"Yes I remember."
"...so come join us?"
"No. I cannot join."
"Why not?"
"I do not speak English."

I had to yell at my Hong Kong counterparts team. I was on a video conference with them in an actual important meeting. This story kind of will suck because I can't divulge details but they were trying to say that my own data from last year was actually their own and that it was up to date and salient. I'm talking that it was my own, self made excel spreadsheet and PowerPoint coming back at me an entire year later and without any editing whatsoever, being repackaged as up-to-date economic information.

I told them all that this was disengenous bullshit and where are the real numbers, research, work etc. Lol
