apropos man posted:Were you speeding? Were you auto-docking at the time? The reason I ask is, there was an exploit whereby a player could be ganked if they are flying around a station at speed and someone with like 3% hull flies into them. The ganker with the 3% hull explodes (in their cheap Sidewinder, or whatever) and the person that were minding their own business suddenly accrues a bounty and the station opens up on them. If you are in auto-dock then you can't be deemed culpable for the ganker hitting you and you don't get the bounty. Fly safely and obey the local speed limits, friends.

That explains why the speeding warning is there in the HUD. I remember keeping under the speed limit because I thought something bad would happen. Seems like a long time ago. I'm glad I started using engineers after they removed the commodity requirements and made each collection count as 3 items. I bet there are some pretty funny forum posts with old-timers spitting fury about how it's too easy now, after they spent hours looking for mats.

Okay, I need help figuring out what the hell I'm doing wrong. I can't even complete the combat tutorial mission because I can't figure out how I'm supposed to maneuver like the goddamn AI. I can get at most two or three potshots off before they zip behind me, then in the time it takes me to spin my ship around they've already killed me. The ship rotates like it's submerged in molasses, and the AI can very visibly change direction much faster than I seem to be able to. I'm assuming there's something I'm doing wrong that's causing my ship to move like a lethargic turtle, because otherwise gently caress this game.

Learn how pips to engines affect the throttle blue zone where manoeuvrability is best, and then combine that with how your up/down vertical vector thrusters will affect your turn circle. You can also try briefly switching flight assist off to flip your ship faster if you have a steady hand though.

Not sure how much flight sim experience you have, but if you are having problems maneuvering you can adjust your throttle. Slower speeds for tighter turns. Also I don't know if the AI operates with flight assist on or off, but that's another way to greatly enhance how your ship moves. When I am in combat, regardless of the ship I'm flying I usually drop my throttle to about 25%, then put three pips in SYS and WEP. That usually lets me turn tightly enough to get a bead on enemies while keeping shields steady and weapons online.

I haven't messed with the eng/sys/wep stuff much yet (is that what you mean by pips?) to really get a feel for the difference, but I did figure out that killing my throttle in a turn let me turn faster, and gunning the throttle from zero has the same effect, but only momentarily until it picks up speed. So I was able to finally complete the mission by jamming my throttle back and forth to force tighter turns.

If you're inside of that range you'll be your most maneuverable.

As a recently joined noob myself I found that the most important thing to do regarding combat is to pick your battles and that means learning about the games ships and what their capabilities are. Unless you're insanely awesome at the game and have hundreds of combat hours under your belt you shouldn't be picking fights with bigger ships, generally. Also numbers matter a whole lot. Getting yourself into a 1v2 is just asking for a world of hurt. Conversely if you see a ship getting gangbanged by 5 other ships you can probably join in on the attack and get kill credit at minimal risk to yourself. You hit the nail on the head there. Learn to recognize civilian (Orca et al, the Type-X series, Hauler, whatever), multi-role (Adder, Cobra, Asp, Diamondback-E, the like) and dedicated combat ships (Eagle, Viper-3, Vulture, DB-S, FdL..) and estimate if you really want to tangle with them from there - remember that if you're in doubt, you can use the Target tab on the left-hand command panel to take a quick peek at the identified subsystems on the target ship. It won't tell you exact numbers but it'll generally give you an idea of exactly how much heat (and shield boosters/cells) they're packing. Pick your battles and don't be afraid to hightail it out of there if things go sour. And yes, numbers are an enormous advantage in this game. I was amused when I first dropped into a HazRES and the first thing I saw was a wing of five iEagles - five minutes later, I wasn't laughing. Two or three halfway combat-fit ships can down even a big ship's shields in a hurry. Again, pick your battles, and remember to take a quick peek around to see if there are any other ships in the area that might assist your target - targets in same or allied factions (like two pirates in the same pirate band) might decide to aggro you even if they're not in an actual wing with your primary target. And yes. Size isn't everything - I used to hunt pirate lord Anacondas in my Viper-3 at one point, before they buffed the AI, and something like a Vulture is a threat to absolutely anything - but you really should know what you're doing before you purposefully pick a fight with something much bigger than you.
