For Ramirez, that's a decent caricature.

Which means if you submitted it to an art professor they'd probably recommend a different major.

By the time they use the bomb, the money spent for purchasing it has long been spent. In other words, you're not saving millions by not using your bomb, you're just not making use of your investment.

I thought those were for the guided bombs. Do you really need to guide an almost-nuke?

It's not an almost-nuke by like three orders of magnitude. Explosion equivalent to 11 tons of TNT for the MOAB; 15 kilotons of TNT for Little Boy.

Let me put it in another way: the problem is in the decision to buy the bomb in the first place, not in the decision to use it after you bought it.

Well yeah. I wasn't trying to say we should have spent $300 million making a bomb just to say we could, I was saying it still makes me mad that building really huge bombs is something we consider worthy of investment but the health and well-being of our population is not

(although thinking the single bomb cost $300 million was part of why I was mad when I wrote the original post)

Bombs aren't replaced unit-by-unit, they're bought in batches. Dropping a MOAB now doesn't mean you're going to buy a replacement immediately. Furthermore, bombs like pretty much everything else have a limited shelf-life. After a while, they're not good for service anymore and have to be scrapped. Scrapping a bomb is expensive because it's a sensitive task (you're talking about explosive stuff after all; you can't just toss it into an industrial shredder).

So basically how it works is that the defense administration (Pentagon for the US) budgets for a number of ammunition and ordnance that are expected to last for X years. If operationally they're used faster than planned, you'll have to buy more sooner than expected, and it'll cost you. But if you don't use them? Then they just sit in storerooms until it's time to scrap them, at which point it would have been cheaper to drop them on some enemies.

Did you mean to say this because we're talking about buying + not-using vs buying + using, and what you're saying sounds like a conversation you're having with the invisible cat under your bed.

While you're on, look up tritonal disposal and try telling me the process costs $170 000 per bomb. That's assuming they're not recycling it, which is definitely in the works if not being done now.
