What would be a good mech for zipping around the place and shooting flamethrowers at giant robot butts? Bonus points if it can be useful when it is not flamethrowering a giant robot butt.

No one ever believes me why I say things are fun. People get hung up on "good" when I say I like things.

Also lol at having to give people a list of "chicken walker" mechs to qualify for the event.

No warhorns, no reason to play.

If I declare loyalist for Space Vikings can I leave the party once I get full loyaltist points or did they remove that? Should I join a merc unit? So, I'd like to give this a try, and I'm willing to spend a modest amount of money to improve the starting experience. What would the thread recommend I look at in the $20-40 range, if anything?

I'd honestly suggest trying your hand in a Medium or Heavy mech first. I don't own it but you could get the Hero Timber Wolf and just customize it how you see fit since you'll get one of the most effective mechs in the game at a good weight class that wonder hinder group play, with a c-bill bonus.

It's called the Warrant and it's in their Clan Heroes section on the Store page.

Yes, I know I'm old, get off my fucking lawn so I can yell at these clouds.

Play a bit with whatever the current crop of trial mechs are. They won't be great, but good enough that you can get a feel for what's going on. Do the tutorial missions because you can earn a couple million c-bills there. Save up all your newbie bonuses and the cbills you earn farting around in trial mechs until you figure out what kind of play style you like. Traditionally a hunchback or a thunderbolt are both solid choices for a first mech, or you can save up for a while and snag a timberwolf if you're patient.

edit: if you HAVE to spend money I'd probably say buy the Timberwolf hero. It's got a nice bonus to c-bills and you can re-work it into just about any play style you end up liking due to the fact that's it's an omnimech. It's a really solid all around mech that you'll keep using for a while. The c-bill bonus will help make things easier as you grind up funds to buy other mechs.

It does not compel you! http://mwomercs.com/news/2017/04/1789-news-regarding-latest-wave-clan-hero-mechs

Because a huge chunk of the new hero mechs were pretty much flat out p2w making the hero mechs the best in chassis thanks to the omnipod system, PGI finally caved and is releasing a bunch of CB mechs so the heroes aren't p2w. There is going to be a new variant of the MLX that has the same ST energy mounts as the hero, and it comes with 8 ballistic arm slots too.

1. The loyalty HBR and CTF can be useful. CTF can be a push mech when you coordinate because of its CT bonus.

2. I haven't piloted a Viper but they can be annoying. Also very fragile.

3. As much as you want since spending cash is relative to the person.

I think the best starting point with your newbie bundle of cbills is an arctic cheetah. the classic build is 5 small pulse lasers and an ecm, run around frantically and shoot butts.

I think MW:O for all its faults is relatively newb friendly, at least more so than some of the other F2P systems like World of Tanks, which lock you into lovely tanks and you have to grind your way to a decent one. The trial mechs aren't great, but usually aren't complete crap and with the cadet bonuses (Do they still exist?) You can buy a mech fairly quickly... admittedly there is little to tell people what a good mech build is besides going to meta mechs or other sites.

I know everyone loves the cheetah, but my personal preference is the locust, your so small people especially in the lower tiers really struggle to hit you.

IMO lights are up there with assaults in "need to know how the game works before they're fun." Assaults you're hosed if you don't position right, while you really need to know the flow of the battle to do well with a light.

I think mediums and heavies give you just enough crunch to make you think you can deal, though. With a light you're going to at least have a sliver of a chance to vamoose before the hammer falls. You're going to die horribly to start with regardless though. And going fast is inherently fun.

Game is fun. Maybe it's gotten better over the last few years, or maybe I've just been inured to f2p by modern standards, but the pay model doesn't seem that bad at all.

My issue with the game isn't grind or anything like that in which MW:O if you aren't terrible is pretty forgiving (although the new skill system will probably change that). Just :pgi: constantly making terrible decisions in response to game balance, and generally just being run by assholes. MW:O is a fairly good arena F2P multiplayer in my opinion, yet it still fails to live up to its decade old predecessors.

I agree with this. The only type of robot that I'm decent in is a light, but I also agree that a light robot is not a good choice for someone new to this game. Neither is an assault. If you're new, and you have that nice bit of nest egg cash from finishing your first few games, a Stormcrow (medium) or Timberwolf (heavy) would be a good buy. They are hard to gently caress up, and even if you do mess them up, fixing them is just a forum post and a cheap refit away. Learn the game with one of these two robots, then play a light or an assault if you feel like switching it up after you've had a bit of experience.

Realtalk: lrms can be a good way to farm cbills in solo queue because of the inflated damage. It can also be good when you're too drunk to aim.

LRMs and the snipe meta :pgi: pretty much forces on the game solely because the devs are really, really, really, really bad at brawling.

Also Rus takes design decision advice from his toddler child.

When we group run / coordinate LRM drops, it can be fun but it's also highly map dependent. For instance, if 12 of us decide to drop in LRM 15 Cents and get HPG, we're just hosed. It CAN be fun but really only as a gimmick night type thing.
