wasn't she scrapped as a character at like, the very early design stage? that would make it less "shogi chunni isn't cool enough to be a party member" and more "we took this girl with that one japanese haircut we by law have to have in this game and made her a shogi chunni player instead of a party member"Endorph posted:anyway here's an effort post about the opening animes for this game and vanilla persona 4: this is all pretty much true but here's a counterpoint the P5 intro worked way way better as a trailer to build hype for the game than the P4 intro did. That and the casino intro made me go from "oh is P5 finally coming out? cool whatever" to "TAKE ALL MY MONEY' in the span of maybe 15 seconds, fortified by the rest of the Totally Wack and Crazy poo poo that trailer showed. That video got millions of views on youtube and I was probably at least 1% of those, give or take. meanwhile when I first saw that p4 intro I was like "well this is pretty cool I guess, can't wait for that to come out" and went back to playing FES without really thinking about it for another year or so

I feel the Persona 4 Golden intro sacrifices a lot of the thematic energy into stylistic but repetitive patterns. It's fine Shadow World is a good song, but I think I actually like the Dancing All Night op song and maybe even the anime's first op song better Sky's The Limit is good

okay, never mind, the dancing all night opening is rad. You have Kanji break dancing, Naoto absolutely vogue-ing her loving brains out, Yukiko and Chie butt bumping and Rise doing a sick body slide like she's a libero in volleyball okay holy gently caress yosuke just did a death drop, this op loving kicks rear end

Endorph posted:not really, they mentioned outright choosing between haru and her as opposed to just going 'okay she isn't going to be a party member actually,' which implies it was a little later in development when they were mapping out the story proper, as opposed to just who the cast would be. the fact that the choice was between her and haru specifically as opposed to her vs any other possible character that could exist in that slot implies they had mapped out the story with both haru and her and realized that they were the two most expendable characters and so one of them needed to be cut. So if Hifumi is Best Girl. And Haru was chosen over her. Does that make Haru Greatest Girl? Okay, Haru is Greatest Girl, it's canon now.

Endgame spoilers Man I was really hoping I could fuse a strong demon of some great capacity, the highest level one I had at the end of the game was roughly level 69. Metatron's weakneses are awful but it's motherfuckin Metatron and I wanted that boy on my bench. I guess that's to be left for NG+. I'm such a sucker for that final scene with the whole city cheering, rising the Phan-site percentage. The same kind of culmination of energy thing that makes me think of Spiral Power. Moments like that are so cool they make me wanna tear my shirt off and pound my chest.

Caidin posted:Okay, so huge spoilers for 12/24 and I guess persona 4 if anyone cares about that and um, hmmmm... Well, it seems slightly more complicated than that: So the Holy Grail has been growing more and more powerful in the depths of Mementos for an unspecified period of time. At some point well before the game's start it was materialized out of some conglomeration of human desires. It may very well have been simply the Treasure of Mementos; that is to say, the embodiment of all of mankind's desires. It has become distorted, presumably because of how sick modern society has become. Enough toxic desires have polluted the collective unconscious. The Holy Grail is a concept, this dream of some magical solution to everyone's problem, it's that golden goodie that you keep thinking you're going to attain so long as you get this next promotion or pass this next test or...beat out this competitor or...sabotage this person's project or... So over time, the increasingly toxic levels of societal trouble, as we see represented by the Palace-owners we face, have poisoned this concept of a "reward" that awaits you, the Holy Grail. It has become sentient, and steadily starts enslaving human shadows in the depths of Mementos, growing powerful. Kamoshida, Madarame, and all the others whom you face, were normal shadows who experience a sudden strength of will, and broke free of the Holy Grail's grasp. Their own individual treasures were more appealing to them than the collective treasure the Grail represented. It appears, though I'm not entirely sure why, that the Grail wanted to bring these Shadows back under its thrall. At the same time, it also gave Akechi his power, which actually served to help strengthen Shido's shadow. It seems that if Shido had gotten elected, the Holy Grail would have been satisfied with that outcome, and likely...I dunno, gone dormant or something? The Grail says as much. However, it seems that it has taken Igor's form in order to manipulate you into taking down the Shadows that escaped its clutches. For whatever reason it decides that it must test the worth of mankind, and so pits you into a rigged game while you're already doing its dirty work. The Grail grows more powerful, and gains more of a hold over the people, the longer in the game you go on. By the time your group has become public enemy number one, the population has become jaded enough for the Grail to really take hold. That's why, by the time you defeat Shido, the general public is utterly apathetic. This is because their Shadows have been effectively consumed by the Holy Grail. Remember Persona 3? We know the result of a Shadow consuming a human being's cognitive self, be it Persona or Shadow, is to induce a braindead, comatose state. It was called Apathy Syndrome then; we see it here reflected on a societal level. It is that apathy that the Holy Grail wants; apparently mindless consumerism is its ultimate goal.

I can only imagine the final dungeon denizens reacting to my level ~60 party, then BOOM, level 99 Satan right in their face. Since every recent Persona game has had the "everyone's thoughts coming together to give you power against the final boss" thing I was actually much more affected by the quiet scenes later of all your maxed confidants doing whatever they could to get you cleared of your false charges. All of those were amazing. At least, all the ones I got were amazing. I didn't finish Chihaya or Shinya's confidants, and to be honest I wouldn't be expecting much from either of them.

I'm just done with the game after 123 hours. It's really something special, although it made me rage more than even dark souls at some points. It has some really weird design decisions but the attention to detail and the awesome soundtrack and art more than makes up for it . Ann is muh waifu, Futaba is muh bestie and Riuji is a retard. Its whole "The sin of rebelling against a god is severe. Its whole "The sin of rebelling against a god is severe. Actually, going by Strange Journey and SMT IV (which don't necessarily have the same logic as Persona, granted), Yaldabaoth (called the Demiurge there) is actually a part of YHVH to begin with. Specifically, going by main series SMT ideas, he's a fragment representing God's desire to be obeyed. Which... pretty much explains Yaldabaoth's entire motive right there. He wants everyone to worship him, and absolutely nothing else. I suppose when you get down to it, he's the thing that drives all of YHVH's asshattery, since it always seems to boil down to "Worship me mindlessly or else", which is the Demiurge's entire deal. Persona 5 just happened to be the game that put Demiurge front and center. Hmm. With Strange Journey being remade, and Demiurge being the ultimate bonus boss of the game, I wonder if they'll give Persona 5 a nod.
