Ah, the inevitable end of all soldiers in this game.

One thing that has started to annoy me is me being ambushed by undead/demons that I'm actively chasing down. I know they are there, I'm pursuing them, how in the hell do they surround me.

I had an contract to defend a town from bandits. I killed the first wave, then the second wave ran into a caravan and I joined the guards...Turned out they didn't need help, there were 8 guards with really fancy armor and weapons, better than mine even. They just steamrolled the bandits without much help.

Monks are another good background for that list. High resolve and a lot of event impact. Earlier I had a good one where my monk and cultist started arguing. I decided not to break it up, and the monk sergeant beat the poo poo out of the cultist. The cultist enjoyed the beating and said it proved there was darkness in everyone. -1 resolve to monk and +2 resolve (and a broken arm) to cultist.

Even the real ones aren't all that amazing now that they've added war bows to the game. If I'm correct in thinking that they don't roll random stats like a unique item would, then it's +5 max damage, +10% vs armor, and +5% chance to hit.

Ok, I've put the first few chunks of the draft guide up on Steam here: http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198024054503/myworkshopfiles/?section=guides&appid=365360

Still very much a work in progress, as you can see from all the blank sections, but enough of it's there to start generating some feedback. Please take a look if/when y'all get a chance and let me know what you think.

I think its a good guide for new players, personally I am not a huge fan of flails, (I seem to have wretched luck).

Right now I think I will say some personal preferences,

4 Two Handers, two with Greatswords and two with the two hand hammers
4 Shield Bro's with a mix of weapons, two of these guys are built as hammers and two are built as axemen although both have backup spears, plus my replacements/reserves of suboptimal, but interesting background brothers rotate here
Behind the shield bro's 4 Archers armed with Warbows, one of the archers is my sergeant and if I need him too he will set down his bow and pull our his banner to start rallying guys if they start wavering.

I took about 3 casualties, but this group managed to rout ~40ish orcs and goblins in a recent battle when I got jumped waiting for some armor to repair on a ~raid enemy camp~ mission to rescue prisoners. I will admit I save scummed, because the first attempt mace orks got lucky and stun locked most of my two handers, while my shield bros and archers pivoted to fight of the goblin wolfriders and ambushers coming in on the flank.

On the plus side I got a free level 5 sellsword to join from the prisoners.

Another perk I experimented with this time around was giving nimble to my archers, which I think was smart if the enemy manages to plink them they have a ~50% chance or better of the hit just glancing on top of the difficulty of hitting them while behind a shield bro. It jumped up their durability significantly and I can leave them in light armor/helms so they don't get vision penalties. This would work even better if I could ever run into the direwolf armor poo poo.

Yeah this is a really good point, worth adding, thanks.

2 Greatswords / 2 2hHammers seems to be a really good split, I've liked it too. One of the still-drafting sections will cover party composition and formations and that'll be in there.

This may be known, as I'm newer to the game, but you don't need to wait on choosing Rally the Troops for the Sergeant ambition. I already had it on my bannerbro and it completed itself in less than a day, possibly at midday when other stuff is checked, I don't remember. It's pretty minor but in case someone wants the ability to Rally before the ambition they don't need to sweat it.

If you lose your Sergeant can you make another one?

EDIT: Also I'm really liking this guide. I've been building my dudes with Student first but have been going more defensive with Steel Brow, Colossus, and/or Shield Mastery for my frontline depending on their stars, but Pathfinder on everyone does seem like a solid idea given how often the ground is hard to cover. Marshes and forests are definitely a pain.

Cool guide!

Couple things I noticed:
You misspell Wiederganger and Nachzehrer at some point. Also might help to note that a Wiederganger is just a zombie (which you do for Nachzehrer/Ghoul).
Hedge Knights can also train new recruits. (I don't know how these events work for other backgrounds, but in their case this is specifically limited to low-level bros, and possibly to those that haven't been around for long.)
Witchhunters can make antidotes out of Nachzehrer teeth. Not very notable overall but maybe you want to include it for the sake of completeness.

There's no actual Sergeant mod your guys get, it's just the sash item you get as a reward for fulfilling the ambition. So if your original Sergeant bites it you can just give the sash (and presumably banner) to someone else. Not sure if there's a way to get the sash back if you lose it.

Very nice guide. One question though:

Is it really worth it to pick Student as everyone's first level-up right when you're first starting a new game? It makes them level faster, but wouldn't that also make tougher enemies appear more quickly, as a result of the faster leveling? I forget how the difficulty scaling works in this game. Is it based on renown or is it based on the current day or experience level of your guys? In the past, I've only given Student to new recruits later in the game, in a band already full of veterans, just so they will catch up to the rest of the men more quickly. Upon hiring a lvl 1 guy, I'll give him Student and a training hall boost and he'll lvl up really fast that way.

I'm pretty sure difficulty scaling is at least partly based on how successful enemy spawn points are. So, indirectly related to the day, insofar as you (and the other merc companies) can only be in one place at a time and everywhere else will slowly escalate.

So, I've clocked more hours into this bloody game than anyone I know, and while it's been fun, I have yet to actually complete a crisis.

I get to the point where a crisis starts, I take the requisite quests, and then I win one or two battles in a row, before totalled equipment and wounded brothers inevitably lose me one, and a death spiral sets in.

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I deck troopers out in mail and chain, remember to use special abilities and use a variety of weapons.

For that matter, I rarely get a trooper above lvl 8 and never above lvl 9 before they eat it. How do you keep yours alive?

Two things really, you're taking fights before you're ready (take a day to rest, dammit) and while mail is ok, it's mid tier armour. My guys all have 200 durability head armour and at least 150 on the body. As soon as i can i bump that up to at least 200. All my guys also train up more melee defence just about every level.

Getting a dude to higher levels is mainly just a case of me playing more consistently. It's easy to get into the habit of going "nah he's got it, he's my best brother" and then he dies because you've not supported him properly

I consider reinforced hauberks (210 armour) with a 200+ helmet to be an absolute minimum for front liners by the time the first crisis starts, but ideally you already have a good chunk in something heavier.

From what I can tell difficulty is based on renown and calendar date more than on your bro's levels. I could be wrong, but that's another part of the calculation on taking Student on everyone -- get ahead of the curve and make sure you have some level 11 guys by the time the crisis hits. Either way though that's probably the most controversial advice I have in there so I tried to make clear it's optional.

Trade is always useful but I think the most important thing is just not wasting your money. I don't spend money on anything except recruits and armour, with few exceptions (until I want to get greatswords and 2h hammers) and I make minimising losses my main priority because replacing dudes is expensive. After the early game I save up every bit of cash with the aim of getting into reinforced hauberks ASAP. I don't buy any lighter armours unless they're damaged and therefore cheaper than usual. I try to find the best spot on the map for grinding missions which also lets me do some trading and if possible start boosting my reputation with a settlement with an armourer. Unless your brothers are injured, any time spent travelling on the map is wasted so I try to minimise that.

It doesn't take long before you're doing contracts for 1-2k each and getting piles of loot to go along with it.

One of the devs has stated fairly categorically that renown doesn't impact difficulty as such, it just gives you access to tougher contracts. The same enemies (more or less) will still be waddling around, you just have the option to take a swing at tougher ones / the occasional tougher mission spawn depending on how mission enemies work.

I would like to know this as well. I keep getting antsy and getting 10+ dudes before the end of the first week to pad my ranks to keep from being overwhelmed, but if experience is shared equally I'll probably try toning that down a bit to get a good core group before expanding out.

Started yet another new file, and buying badly damaged higher tier armor is really good. Grabbed a 150 durability helmet on day 2 because it was like 28% durability at a small encampment that was in high spirits. That guide has helped me a ton, thanks Hieronymous Alloy!

Very nice guide!

Regarding perks, I really like going Pathfinder --> Gifted on all the early bros. Gifted in particular was really noticeable: 3-5 extra points in melee attack, melee defense, and fatigue let me swap from spears to flails earlier and made my bros feel like murdermachines versus the waves of bandit thugs they were facing at that point.

Regarding weapons, I like the advice of spear til 60 melee attack, then sword until your fatigue is good enough for flails, then flails for armor harvesting.

Regarding group size, I like staying at 8 bros for as long as possible, usually day 15-20. That's a front line of 7 plus bowbro in the back. I add extra archers when I run into a necromancer or orcs, and a sergeant when I get that ambition.

Falcons own and I'm bad at trade.

Just FYI the AI will do this on purpose, once you're out of the early game I would strongly suggest putting all new recruits in the back with a polearm and plenty of armour because enemy archers will always go for the low hp / armour / defense brothers. Which is one of the reasons why I'm not really sold on using shields in the late game, your shieldbearers just don't get targeted by arrows that much.

Yeah, archers love to pepper my guy running around with a greatsword chopping up their friends with arrows. Luckily he has a lot of armor and his defensive stats are getting OK, but typically I have to eventually retreat him behind the shieldwall if my archers haven't sufficiently thinned out their archers.
