Because you are underestimating the percentage of youtube viewers who are bored pre-teens. Even if they aren't following age guidelines, youtube has to pretend they do.

Still, it's not like, oh say, the 18-25 demographic isn't hotly sought after by advertisers.

I know at least that much about how the traditional TV business works.

mXr had an update about it recently. It basically amounted to some advertisers discovered their ads on like hardcore terrorism videos and went ballistic. With the age restriction changes he took like an 80% revenue hit

Ads can be pulled from videos if the advertiser doesn't want to be associated with the content. Traditionally, age restrictions were for things with sexual, violent, or vulgar content so restricted videos could safely be blocked from ad revenue.

And then YouTube started restricting otherwise benign videos like guys doing target shooting or people talking about transgender rights.

Vet Ranch is a good channel that helps animals that would otherwise be euthanized. They are funded by viewer donations and YouTube ad revenue. It's main viewership seems to be 8-15 year olds and the comments are one of the more positive places. They warn when there's graphic surgery footage, but it's done clinically. Little blood, sheets covering non-surgical areas, that sort of thing. Putting it on the restricted list is asinine, and if YouTube wants to curate content, they need a way more granular system. I can understand parents not wanting their kids not to see the content, but Vet Ranch being on the same list as videos discussing ISIS?

You have to sign up through like three screens for this restricted mode. It's not like it just disappeared for the internet at large.

IMO what Youtube really needs to do is add more internal filters, like "kid-unfriendly content" vs "offensive content." Somebody saying "gently caress" a few times or somebody firing off a gun or somebody mentioning sex shouldn't go in the same category as "guy ranting about niggers."

Maybe it's just because I grew up in a super hick area but it's really weird to me that showing the insides of an animal is considered controversial or :nms: to anyone of any age group.

I was wondering if kids still get to dissect stuff in school but it's probably a felony to bring a scalpel into a school now or some poo poo.

I've seen some Scandinavians kill and dissect a giraffe in a similar manner. They never seen to have very good reasons for killing the animals, but I guess they know more about zoo management than I do.

The reason tends to be "this animal could flip out at any moment and kill all our specimens if kept in current conditions, and we have nowhere to relocate it". Which is very legitimate.

Oh yeah that seems like a good reason. These lions were "They might gently caress each other and we don't want inbreeding, and they might kill each other." I think the inbreeding thing was the reason they killed the giraffe. Seems like neutering them is preferable, and they might kill each other unless we kill them first doesn't make sense.

But I'm no zoologist. I doubt the zoo is just itching to kill animals.
