It's also exactly the thing I would say if a dipshit flight crew handled this situation that bad in the middle of a scandal.

Tell that to disabled passengers, especially ones with service animals, and to people who take pets with them (e.g. moving cross-country). The recent wave of scandals involving United are all only news because they're happening to white, able-bodied people (go figure); airlines have been lovely for years without it making national news. (This is not to say that United doesn't deserve the poo poo they're catching for this, because they totally do.)

I've seen some Scandinavians kill and dissect a giraffe in a similar manner. They never seen to have very good reasons for killing the animals, but I guess they know more about zoo management than I do.

Zoos are trying to retain non-inbred populations without taking additional animals away from the wild, and that means dumping geriatric animals or those who can't breed with anyone else because they're too closely related to the others in captivity.

Zoo animals are expensive and zoo space is limited. All of these animals were offered to other zoos but no one has room. Also there are a lot more restrictions for owning exotic animals now. It used to be that zoos would dump their geriatrics to private citizens. For example, a man near Salem, OR, once had four giraffes randomly on his farm because when the Portland Zoo needed to rotate out their giraffes, he'd take the older ones and them them live out their lives on his farm. It is now illegal for such a man to own giraffes.

A lot of legislation gets passed due to bleeding hearts not understanding the reality of a system that frankly they're not willing to pay to sustain in a more compassionate way.

Yeah, I'm curious to see if other passengers on the flight have commented on what actually went down.

The couple said they moved between seats in their own section, were minding their own business, asked for an upgrade and were refused, then ordered off the plane for no reason.

United says that they were being disorderly, tried to upgrade themselves, and so the Sky Marshals asked them to leave because of that at United's behest.

I want to believe the couple, but the whole thing is kinda fishy.

Pro tip: You don't actually have to get this one particular person off the flight if they really really don't want to get off.

You find the person who's willing to be bumped for the least amount of money, and they end up getting the money while everyone else who was holding out for more gets the flight they originally booked.

Yeah, even with all the poo poo UA's been dealing with, this sounds like shittyretailcustomers.txt "All I did was go to Best Buy to try and return my toaster, they told me "no" and then out of nowhere the police showed up and arrested me for no reason, can you believe it?" Sir, you came into the store, cut in front of everyone else in the Customer Service line, immediately began yelling at the reps, threatened to kill them, and then threw your toaster at them when you didn't hear what you wanted to hear.

I want to believe this couple just moved up a row in a half empty plane that turned out to be economy+ seating and then when told they needed to go back just said "ok" with no fuss yet were still escorted off, but past years of working retail has really burned me out on giving them the benefit of the doubt.

I think the point is that the gate agent makes increasing offers to everyone up to $5000 and if no one takes it, they get a supervisor, who then keeps making offers from $5000 to $9950, and if it gets to $10,000 and no one's taken it, then they get some manager to make a call on what to do, which seems like a reasonable policy.

If it gets to $10k, I imagine that some enterprising person might try to negotiate directly with a manager and see how high they can go, how many flights are gonna have zero takers on $9,500 to take a later flight?

This is my instinct as well. I'm betting there was a whole middle part of the story where they copped a major attitude and refused to move from the seats, then as soon as they were told security was coming to escort them off they of course instantly act like "forget it we're cool, we'll move seats no problem!" Well sorry rear end in a top hat its too late for all that.

Then again, United also claimed that the passenger that started this whole debacle had to be forced off the plane by police because he was being "belligerent", as if he's just an unreasonable rear end in a top hat who needed to have his face bashed a few times to get him to behave.

I'm not incredibly eager to believe the corporate line on these stories out of hand.

Giraffes were only moved from the 'Least Concern' to 'Vulnerable' category in Dec 2016 but that zoo fed their 'surplus' giraffe to the lions in 2014.
Note also that 'Vulnerable' is the category before 'Endangered'.

He woke up, took a handful of pills and flew the plane to Costa Rica, presumably.

I was on a plane that was running late, and toward landing everyone was scrambling to figure out how to get to their connection. A bunch of us all realized we were going to Pittsburgh on the same flight, but it was going to be a matter of minutes to get there on time.

Weirdly enough the rest of the plane seemed to act like normal humans and let the connections deplane immediately.

All of us were looking for the same gate and for like 3 seconds were pretty unified on figuring out where to go and how. It was far away. Then we all just loving ran, like, just scattered in all directions.

I get there and they've just closed the gate doors and I am actually happy that I can just die right there on the floor in an completely empty terminal. The airline worker opens the door and I go "oh, here's my ticket" and she lets me on.

So I walk down the tunnel and cross my fingers that I can find an overhead spot quickly. The plane is completely empty, not a single person of the dozens. I find my seat and toss my bag into an overhead, and notice there actually is someone else here - a like 300 year old lady that was sitting behind me on the previous flight.

Giraffes aren't endangered. Even then, there are multiple species of giraffe. There's no world where "giraffes are endangered" would make sense. You'd say "all giraffes are endangered" if that were true, which it isn't.
