On your second question, I think the implication was that external forces like Lavenza/Philemon as represented by the butterfly identified you to be the Trickster, likely when you stood up to Shido in the first place. The fact that you stood up to him and obeyed your own justice is what defines your character. This is why Yaldaboath splits Lavenza into Caroline and Justine and hijacks the Velvet Room, to try and rig the game in his favor, because you in that action denied his basic assumption about how humanity works. And why Lavenza wrote the list of fusions that form the Strength Confidant story for you to follow and help you on your journey, outside of the False Igor's machinations.

I've just finished the fifth dungeon and I still don't feel I have a proper grasp on fusing. I understand it (ish), I just don't feel confident doing it.

Also it seems that it cycles between me being only able to make physical dudes and then only able to make magic dudes, and I never seem to have appropriate fusion pairs (far too many things I want to keep so I'm losing things I really would like to have).

I realised last night that I have a chinese robot thing that actually does nothing. I made it with two guys that do a fair bit.

What about fusing are you having trouble with? On the surface it's pretty simple. Two things decide what persona you get: the arcana of the two personas you are fusing, and their levels averaged together.

For example, Fool + Lovers = Chariot. So if you fuse Arsene (level 1 Fool) and Pixie (level 2 Lovers), you would get Agathion (level 4 Chariot), since that is the next highest persona of Chariot of the fused average level 1.5.

The trick is to pay attention to what skills a persona can inherit; the way you end up fusing something poor is by, for example, fusing two "mage" type personas into a "physical" one that can't inherit most of their good abilities. You should be trying to carry over skills like group heals and the most powerful tier of elemental attacks you have from every persona forward until those skills are obsoleted by a better version. If you'd be giving up a bunch of useful skills for a persona that's not even really a higher level, don't do the fusion yet. You'll find a better combo to fuse that same guy with later.

Also make sure you're checking the resistances and immunities of your "useless" personas. There are some persona that barely learn any useful skills, but have something like immunity to physical attacks which make them worth switching to and using sometimes anyway.

Close. Since the average there is 1.5 that rounds up to 2 and then it checks to see if there is a Persona of that level of the right Arcana. There isn't, so it looks up for the next highest level which is Agathion at 3. If the average base level was 3.5, then it'd round that to 4, see there isn't anything there and then give you Slime since he's the next one up at 10.

Also for the original person who mentioned it, it uses the base level not the current level which might also be throwing you off. That's a tricky thing to keep track of sometimes, so don't worry too much about trying to calculate the actual result yourself unless you're gunning for something specific (like for a Strength request).

Yeah that's what I was getting at. Agathion is 3, not 4 so you have me there. I find doing fusions by hand a lot of fun (and by habit; I had to do it by hand in P3 because I didn't know better) but really why do the work when someone made a sweet fusion calculator anyone can use.

Oh keep in mind that if you ever feel like you've fused yourself into a corner where you have mostly crappy skills on your active team, are lacking elemental coverage, etc it's pretty trivial to pop open the Compendium and recall one of your best earlier guys

The thing is that every fusion appears to go to the wrong type. My good but underleveled mage cannot become anything but a physical guy.

Where i'm going wrong; I guess the big thing i've been doing wrong is to try to have 3/4-element personas rather than a bunch of 1-2 or making sure every persona has a backup skill. Like I don't feel right making a buff-only persona but i probably should.

Actually wait poo poo thinking about it, this might be wrong. I don't know for sure, yet, but if it works like most SMT games then it'll be

code:
[(BaseLevel1 + BaseLevel2)/2] + 1
and then use that result to check. That wouldn't change most things, but that errant +1 can be important sometimes and just push things over to the next result up when you wouldn't expect it. Like, it wouldn't change the given example (1.5+1 = 2.5 rounds up to 3 which is exactly the Agathion) but it's... something at least.

e;

Really in this instance, it still doesn't matter too much since the pre-existing fission calculator is mostly useful, though it has some problems (eg it claims there's no way to make Mot without having demons over level 80 or paid DLC which I don't believe for a second). It's just something I care about keeping track of, since I've made several fusion calculators for my own personal use for a few things where there isn't any easily available English resources. :v:

There's nothing wrong with creating something with garbage stats and good skills to use as a trade up fodder. It's pretty hard to fuse yourself into a corner and be stuck with only stinkers.

And it's really tempting to have a jack of all trades, master of all trades persona which you basically keep as your primary, but there's no huge reason to do that. For example, you'd probably do well to have a Yoshitsune which is a physical beast with only Hassou, Charge and passives that help you survive, regen SP/HP, auto Ma-buff(s) or whatever which is only actually any good for Hassou Tobi and having a jack of all trades weak persona that can't do good damage but gives great weakness hitting coverage.

That might not be a bad idea. Granted I don't think this thread is quite active enough with spoiler discussion that it's routinely stifling other talk, but on the other hand, it's nice to be able to talk about the full game without having to spoiler tag, so a spoiler thread might be nice.

Yeah, don't feel bad making specialist Personas. Joker can change once per turn with no downside. Make use of that. Individual Personas don't have to be versatile, because Joker's ability to carry a dozen of them is the ultimate versatility already.

Hard can be pretty unforgiving, I've found. It's not so bad if you stay on top of your SMT/Persona fundamentals (use status effects, make sure you debuff strong enemies consistently) but if you gently caress up, you'll get smacked hard for it.

I was doing fine on Hard from the third Palace onward until one of the Mementos bosses. I had to turn it down to Normal for him. The loving Baphomet shadow you fight for Chihaya's request and his loving Brain Jack spam holy poo poo. I turned it back up after that fight but gently caress that fight.
