the best parts of hockey are, in order:
1. sick dekes
2. snipe shows
3. monster hits
4. big saves
5. injuring the other team (different than #3 because you can appreciate #3 even if it happens to your team if its a clean hit)

I think the issue is that stick infractions are pretty subjective when seen in real time at game speed and referees have a storied history of losing their whistles in the playoffs. They don't want a penalty to 'decide a series' or some wishy washy bullshit when we all know the real reason is fans go apeshit for violence and the NHL is happy to let it happen.

It may just be me, but I've never seen a player hook another dude's hands for a half second and thought "wowee, what tough, manly play."

Worst hockey thing is dudes waterskiing on other dudes. It's gonna get worse before it gets better since it's transitioning to a speed game again. There will not be enough fast skilled guys for every team so GM's and coaches are going to build obstruction and trapping rosters to compete, AGAIN.

4 OT game seven loss, the longest game 7 in Stanley Cup playoff history. After the Capitals had a 3-1 series lead. The game that started the legend of the Capitals playoff futility.

If we're just listing actually cool hockey things I'd like to add:

1. Power forwards just leaning into a defender and outmuscling them as they drive to the net at full speed
2. Emotionally charged fights between two actually useful players
3. Goalie stretch passes
4. Tic-tac-toe passing plays
5. Diving pokechecks
6. Penalty shots in tie games
7. Hip checks
8. Lesser light players going absolutely nuts after scoring an important goal
9. Games that go completely off the rails due to lots of chirping and cheap shots
10. Anything past the 2nd OT

Yep. Add in cross-checks in front of the net and after the whistle (and all the other stuff) and I've really soured on the NHL over the years. I love hockey but the ratio of smart/skilled dekes & passes to dumb/cheap hits & stickwork has gotten too low for me to enjoy watching much more than highlight reels.

Oh, and just to ensure that I don't cause an accidental derail, this is just my personal opinion and I'm not at all hoping to spark a debate on what is/isn't "good hockey". I'm really glad that SAS has a community that discusses hockey in an engaging and informative way so that I can follow the sport closely by proxy. Thanks to all the regs and lurkers who keep these threads/forums going!

I don't mind some of the crosschecks and rough stuff that goes on to an extent, it's the interference they've let creep back into the game and the inconsistency of how they'll let poo poo go until they realize oh maybe we should get this game under control and then start calling terrible poo poo.

ThinkTank posted:

The league's conscious decision to almost completely ease up on stick infractions and interference is one thing I'll never understand. It kills offence and it's not like people consider hooks and slashes to be tough/cool hockey. It just slows things down and sucks the joy out of a lot of games. I'd really love to hear the league's perspective on all that, because it makes absolutely no sense to me.

I think a lot of old timers in league management feel that "you gotta play through it!" and "you can't even touch a guy anymore!" are valid opinions and they also hate lots of power plays.

I'm sure that's a secondary reason, but it's mostly cause Ovi doesn't penalty kill and would just sit on the bench anyway.

To sign them is my real test

With full no movement clause
When a goalie makes a save that involves any or all of the following:

- Stacking the pads
- Catching the puck with the paddle of the stick
- His helmet coming off
- Reaching completely behind him the catch a puck on the goalline that he has no business getting to
- Does a fill split

Who knows? It was a weird series and literally everyone except for Canucks and Habs fans were rooting for the Bruins. It's probably the chippiest cup finals series in modern memory, so honestly the penalties were pretty fair all things considered.
