I'd be willing to bet that most goons would still be pretty high on the books of the third one had been released in a timely manner. The Bad Thread started out as very positive about ASoIaF too, and now......

I think I would still be pretty keen on book 2 if book 3 had been released on time, and wasn't embarrassingly worse than book 2. Even at the time, though, I thought WMF was overly long, and that the Fleurian sections were stupid.

I never finished the first book because it was a literary travesty and came here specifically to see what other people thought of it. But by then the second book was out and JivJov was the only true believer left. Also I'm totally cool with hating on Rothfuss as an internet identity and not as a real person. I'm sure if I actually met him I'd draw wildly different conclusions about him as a person and a parent, but I am allowed to judge him based on what he openly puts on the internet. I don't make conclusions about his mental health though regardless of what he says about it because that would be weird.

Instead we've basically had multiple years of Rothfuss being a dick and......that's it. No good books or material where you can say "Well, guy's an rear end, but I liked his last story, so whatever". At this point, he is the story. Which is apparently how he wants it. (For that matter, if the next ASoIaF book dropped tomorrow and was a literary masterpiece that blew me away, I'd walk back pretty much everything I've said about GRRM in the last couple of years.)

I think the negative turn of opinion was a combination of three things (seriously, this is real talk). 1. NOTW, as a stand alone, was a good opener for a new fantasy author. It came at a time when there was still a lot of hype around magic goes to school, and the purple prose played well with a younger audience. I was 18 when it came out and certainly less of a discerning reader than I am now. But then WMF's dropped, and everything I was willing to overlook, consciously or subconsciously, about book one was magnified in book two (Little to no evidence of an unreliable narrator, even purpler prose (the whole Felurian section), unhealthy relationships with women, women as damsels in distress, whatever you want to call Auri, very little forward progression in the plot, etc). Now that we had a corpus rather than a single book, patterns emerged. It became easier to point at something and say, "oh, this isn't good" and see the pattern, and harder to forgive the obvious flaws. I don't think its unfair to say book two made book one worse. 2. There was time to uncover some well written, critical reviews of his work. I am having a hard time finding the specific pieces, but they did a great job illuminating a lot of the sexism and vapidness using specific examples and quotes from the book. I'll fully admit that my opinion can be shaped by others who write concisely and with great expression about what they do and don't like. After reading some of these articles, which I wish I could find again, I found I couldn't disagree with their conclusions. "How did I overlook that?" was a question I asked myself several times. Being young, I guess. 3. The author's blog. From weird fan fiction to multi page essays about high school girls turned porn stars, this was an all around disastrous insight into the author's mind. His standoffish nature, open hostility to questions about book 3 (whose original release date was promised to be somewhere around 2010 I think), and failed attempts at live streaming created the picture of an unsympathetic man. There's a common question in literary circles: how much consideration should be given to the author of a book vs the book itself? Rothfuss forces us to take his morals, views, and personality into consideration with how he's chosen to present himself online and in other media. And it's not an attractive lens. That's my take. Name of the Wind repopularized the fantasy genre. It was mainstream. My wife's father read it- I don't think he's read one other fantasy book in two decades. When that type of attention is introduced to your niche, you naturally want it to be successful, to act as an ambassador to those outside your niche. When it fails to live up to expectations, the fall is made that much more painful by the hopes you pinned on the work.

Echoing the others that have answered for me it's just because I like to finish things I start. I watched both seasons of The Loop. I watched the last two Hobbit movies. I keep playing the new Tekken games. I finished The Dark Tower series despite Song of Susannah doing it's absolute best to get me to stop reading it. Maybe the show will be a hit and the showrunners can finish the story like with ASoIaF. Can't wait to watch Kvothe be played by that red head kid from Shameless.

Song of Susannah is so bad. I share your sentiments Solice Kirsk. Reading book three will be like watching a video of a car crash. Drama is compelling even if it lacks substance. Same with closure. Or to say it another way: Gene Wolfe posted:I felt that we two might commit some act so atrocious that the world, seeing us, would find it irresistible.”

While I too want book three for some conclusion (see my earlier bemoaning Melanie Rawn) I'm not so foolish as to believe Doors of Stone would be the last Kvothe book. You'd have to be far dumber than Rothfuss to kill the golden calf at this point over something so obviously inconsequential as artistic vision or pride in one's work.

If the original story exists in any format I wouldn't be surprised if he'd want it destroyed given how much rewriting it probably required to end up even in the state it's in now.PJOmega posted:I'm laughing at the idea of Rothfuss's "Top Secret" folder of blank paper.
