Emelin was called out by Thornton and Ryan Malone at distinct points for not being able to take a beating, while Emelin has a metal plate in his head that could re-shatter his orbital bone if he gets into a fight. The self-policing of players they love so much kind of gets weird there when you get into the "well the guy won't get his skull caved in for a hit that was borderline and/or dirty what a pussy" territory where nobody knows how to deal with it.

Punching a dude in the teeth is the only way to keep hockey mans from murdering each other, that's why you can't have visors, apparently.

This is what I was suggesting, not bringing back skull-smashing. :psyduck: Spearing is dangerous and it's a major penalty because of that. 95% of these are super obvious, on replay, but might be hard to catch for a ref on-ice. Make it a 1-game suspension. "Because it's the Cup."

There's a lot of dangerous poo poo that happens on ice, is seen, and doesn't get called. When Johnny hockey's finger got broken, Gulutzan said it wasn't a unicorn. it was the "regular hockey play", one of 11+ on him that game, of a two handed chop to the hands. It wouldn't surprise me if "take a pay cut or we'll let goons chop your fingers off" is a Bettman negotiating tactic, because it seems in the regular season it was open season on anybody who could skate well.

There's a lot of stick work that looks close enough to a "hockey play" when guys are stick checking or battling for position, but nutshots are almost always not even close to being mistakable for good hockey plays.

Getting his in the hands/wrists/ribs in front of the net battling for position? Could be a "hockey play"

Getting stabbed with the tip of a stick in the groin away from the play? Nope.

Crazy idea: call lots of penalties. It'll increase scoring and if teams want a competitive edge, they can stop doing stupid poo poo that causes them to take penalties.

E: bonus: when teams stop doing dumb poo poo, scoring will also probably go up!

E2: lol, Jk. Just make the nets bigger or rounded or something.

Actually it seemed like he was told to take out a vulnerable Couture. Couture was getting all sorts of bullshit right up in what's left of his grill.

Doesn't even need to be a lot more. I knocked together some numbers a while back that showed that, with one more power play per team per game and a similar league-wide conversion rate, scoring would likely go up to roughly where it was 10 years ago.

It's not just powerplays. Its allowing quick small forwards to make plays instead of being grabbed and held mid deke. Defensemen would have to change they way they play if they can't just grab the guy who can out skate them.

Calling obstruction when it happens would increase scoring, and make the entertaining players more entertaining.

P much this. Increasing the number of penalties called isnt the end goal, simply a means of forcing teams to adjust how they play so the game can speed up and allow good players and display their talent.

Clutch and grab is poo poo and makes for poo poo hockey.

Healthy scratch, which I don't get at all. Like why trade for him if you're gonna do this. Especially when your D corps is the walking drat wounded. He's been scratched all 4 games, too.

I don't really think he could be worse than Maatta (or Daley for that matter) so I dunno! But for what it's worth I don't think many teams would be too comfortable having a career AHLer even as their 7th defenseman in the playoffs, which is the alternative to not having traded for Streit (or another defenseman).

Yeah I thought part of the rationale for getting Hainsey and Streit was to have a surplus of middle/bottom tier depth on D. Obviously that's not ideal, but there was no realistic way for the Pens to bolster their top tier D, esp with Shatty going to WSH. So if you know you're going to have to rely on a bunch of mediocre defensemen, at least having a lot of them that you can rotate in and out means that you're not going to have to rely on a bunch of mediocre, exhausted defensemen.

I don't necessarily think Streit will be a huge upgrade on the D line, but at least he's well rested. I think Maatta in particular needs another night off to allow his legs to transform back from stone into flesh.

I'm not sure what's up with Hagelin, no real status update as far as I'm aware. Latest I heard is that he's not practicing with the team today, along with the other injured players, which is not a great sign. I think best case scenario would be that he gets ready for the 2nd round, but then again if he was that close to being ready then I'd have to expect he'd at least be skating with the team. He would be a huge upgrade on our offensive depth rn, I really hope he get back into the lineup

Not sure he's better than any of the guys playing.

I don't get the Maatta hate up in here either. I didn't see last night's game so maybe he was a dumpster fire but overall he's been one of our steadier defenders this series. Prior to last night's game he was only on the ice for like one goal against iirc.

His mistakes seem obvious because he's so slow that when there is a gently caress-up with his normally good positioning, he really can't recover at all.

Whatever happened with Maatta anyway? Wasn't he pretty highly touted when he came into pittsburgh a couple years ago? Did he get hurt or something and just couldn't come back from it?

He's had some injuries and surgery to remove a potential cancer. I remember him being slow as hell even in his rookie year but he seems slower now even than he was back then.

Still he usually makes up for it by being smart and having a good pass/gap. But yeah it's definitely noticeable when he fucks up because his lack of foot speed can doom him.
