He had to do chemo follow-up for that, too. He also fell backwards into an open bench door and apparently had a hard time recovering from that in terms of his skating.

Cancer, two surgeries on the same shoulder. hot-brained by Orpik, hand surgery this year... he just hasn't been able to stay healthy to really work on his strength. He has good hockey sense, but I'm hoping he can have a safe rest of the year. E: I forgot about that open door fall too, that was scary. He can't catch a break.

Staying healthy isn't going to help his slow skating speed, he's pretty hosed in that regard.

Powershift posted:It's not just powerplays. Its allowing quick small forwards to make plays instead of being grabbed and held mid deke. Defensemen would have to change they way they play if they can't just grab the guy who can out skate them. Hockey could use more dekes, but a football player's got the sickest dangle of the month.

He still performs fine. It's not always pretty. But his possession numbers are fine and he doesn't do anything glaringly bad usually. The thing that concerns me more than the slow foot speed is his offensive ability seems to have completely dried up. He used to be good for 30 or so points, but now he's like a pure defensive dman who can pass. Kinda like Brian Dumoulin I guess except he can't skate

That's probably not going to happen...being a solid reliable guy isn't a bad thing but there's probably some unfulfilled promise there now. Brady Skjei's better than him anyways

I mean he's still a top 4ish dman I think who is reliable defensively. It's not like he's a bum. But yeah we envisioned like a 40 point two-way guy which sadly it doesn't look like he's going to be that. At least he's not Pouliot.

Ginette Reno posted:He's had some injuries and surgery to remove a potential cancer. I remember him being slow as hell even in his rookie year but he seems slower now even than he was back then. I don't know, I don't remember ever thinking Maatta was slow his rookie year, but maybe that's selective memory. I think he's gotten noticeably slower, and if anything I think his decision making, gap control, etc. are also at best stagnant (not improving) and IMO I think they're actually declining. Especially over the past year or so, he just seems to make increasingly poor decisions with the puck, leading to more turnovers (and not in a "well, he has the puck so much so it's actually a good thing he has a lot of turnovers!" kind of way) that he can't recover from because he's so slow. Injuries have definitely contributed, but I also wonder if he's got a bit of a confidence issue. If you look at his stats from the past 2 years, he puts up pretty comparable CF%rel as Daley and Cole, which is slightly negative, with Cole having slightly less favorable zone starts than Maatta or Daley. However, most of Maatta's ice time has been with Letang over the past couple years, and as you could probably guess his WOWY's suggest that Letang is the one driving possession when they're together. Basically his stats are getting worse, he's looking worse via the eye test, and even though he's young there just aren't really the hints of improvement that you'd hope to see for his long-term outlook. He's not so bad that we need to dump him ASAP or anything, and given how young he is and how talented he looked in his rookie year, there's still reason to have some hope, but the clock is definitely ticking. For short term outlook in the playoffs, I just think we have enough depth in Streit that it'd be worth resting Maatta a game here and there so that he's not battling fatigue on top of his already tortoise-like speed, but I don't necessarily think Streit is a huge upgrade or anything.

Is Maatta's problem just that he hasn't played a huge stretch of games at a time in quite some time now? He came back, what, 2 weeks ago? I don't know that Streit isn't better than him right now, but I also don't know if sitting him will help him get back into form either. I think trying Streit could be an option, but maybe not for a few more games of not seeing improvement for Maatta. It being the playoffs complicates things tho. He may not have the time needed to work things out.
