Barry definitely knows; the mysterious red robe saw the Umbrastaff in the crystal kingdom arc, asked Taako where he got it, and everyone was just like "oh some dead person had it" and the Red Robe lost it.

Knowing what we know now, how blase Taako was about finding the body is kind of heartbreaking. :smith:

Lucretia must have taken away the others' memories after Lup died. How long must it have taken her to realize that Takko had no idea who she was? Maybe when she burned her name into the wall, and Angus asked him what it meant, and he looked him dead in the face and told him he had no idea. That must have been a bit of a gut-punch.

Man, now I kinda hope we get a highlight reel of Lup's POV on this whole jouney. What was she thinking in Refuge, when she finally got to see what had been eating at Taako this whole time? How good must it have felt, after so long unable to affect the world around her, to personally tear that Wonderland rear end in a top hat's magic from his goddamn bones?

The best resource I've found for collecting all the hints and prophecies is this Masterpost of Cryptic poo poo from The Adventure Zone. I think it's now updated through the end of The Suffering Game. It's really worth a read, especially now, when stuff is starting to come together but there are still a lot of mysteries.

For Lup, it says:

Lunar Interlude III, E40: You point your Umbrastaff at the box of macaroons and begin to cast Prestidigitation, but Prestidigitation does not come out of your Umbrastaff. It feels like your Umbrastaff is sort of exerting a will of its own, and Prestidigitation doesn’t come out of it, the spell Scorching Ray does… Scorching Ray comes out of your Umbrastaff again, and this time your Umbrastaff pulls your elbow so that it’s pointing in a straight line, and it’s firing the spell Scorching Ray into the wall, and you can feel the Umbrastaff making you trace a shape, and it carves out the letter L in fire on the wall, and then it does a U, and then it does a P, and then the staff shuts down and you just feel it lose any power that it was exerting over you in that moment.

The Eleventh Hour, E49: (After THB say they don’t trust the Red Robe) This red-robed figure falls to its knees, and he’s muttering to himself, like he’s trying to kind of calm himself down, and it doesn’t sound like every other time that he’s spoken to you, it sounds like a guy’s voice. And he says to himself, “Lup… they don’t trust me. I can’t do it anymore, Lup, I’m sorry.”

Hmm poo poo ok so - Griffin said this past ep that Lup's school of magic is evocation. I know zero about D&D really so I'm googling, but from the wiki: "Evocation spells manipulate energy or tap an unseen source of power to produce a desired end. In effect, they create something out of nothing. Many of these spells produce spectacular effects, and evocation spells can deal large amounts of damage." Scorching Ray is an evocation spell so that obviously fits, but also, it sure sounds like evocation magic would be the type of magic required to make the Relics. (Though of course we know that the guys all seem to have made one, but I bet Lup was integral to that.)

Then from that post -

When they first find the Umbrastaff - (Merle casts Detect Magic) Your mind starts to swirl- you get dizzy and faint because Detect Magic is a pretty basic spell that you’ve used quite a few times, but you’ve never really gotten a response from it like this, because the response you got from it was everything. It’s all schools of magic. All of the magic that there is seems to be somehow embedded in this cane.

Then when Leon IDs it for the first time - “This is a- there are very few of these, you should count yourself very lucky to have this. This is called an Umbrastaff, which was created by a clever order of wizards known as the Umbrawizards. They created magical items that looked like normal, everyday items that would allow them to conceal those staves and wands, and allow them to bring it into battle unseen. What makes these staves interesting is that they can consume the power of any magical item used by a wizard that you have bested in combat, and absorb their powers and become stronger. So you will want to hang on to this, it is quite a rare find.”

I can't QUITE tell how that all fits together, but it's definitely starting to come together...

You Win!
The relic creation doesn't necessarily have to be evocation. There's a lot of schools of magic that make something out of nothing and what evocation usually makes is some kind of death ray or lightning bolt or fireball. Hell, enchantment is generally the "create magic item" school.

I think Lup being evocation focused is more to fit her personality and to contrast with Taako being a specialist in one of the "passive" schools.

Wait, so if Lup died and is in the afterlife in this plane, then Kravitz knows where she is, and he could possibly enlist her to out of his sticky situation in the afterlife at the moment.

Also Taako and Kravitz have a past together, maybe he can do him a solid.

Lup is in the umbrella. At least, that's what has been heavily implied.

He's a wisecracker!
None of them pass to the astral plane when they die, as implied by Lup and that flashback Magnus had where Barry died and said they'd get them next time. They reset inside their ship when they changed dimensions, so I think the implication is that they're connected to the Light of Creation. They can't truly die because they'll just go back to how they were the first time they left their world. Which is how they could have died dozens of times in the lost century without ever going to the astral plane.

I'm really curious as to how this all works. Your explanation either doesn't apply to all of them or it stopped applying at some point, because when Magnus died in Wonderland, he would have gone to the Astral Plane were it not for the speedy intervention of Taako and Merle.

Well. Why else would the umbra staff shoot at Kravitz unless is was Lup taking vengeance on him for keeping her imprisoned in the astral plane? She's obviously not a human turned into an umbrella, because that's not griffins fancy. Wait, the umbra staff eats things. poo poo. What if the umbra staff ate and absorbed an amiibo.

Kravitz's job, no, the reason for his existence as an undead bounty hunter, is to track down souls that have not crossed over to the Astral Plane and drag them there by force, then throw them into the Eternal Stockade. The only exceptions to this rule are the THB, because they really did Kravitz and The Raven Queen a solid by putting an end to that undead jailbreak.

Lup didn't get that pass. As far as she's concerned, if Kravitz finds out she's in the umbrella, she's toast. So when he almost did, when he pulled out his scythe and started sniffing her out like a skeletal bloodhound, she tried to take him out before he could take her out. Fortunately, he decided that as long as Taako was the one in charge of the umbrella, whatever was in there wouldn't be too much of a threat. Must be that Taako charm. ;-*

Of course, all of this is my interpretation. I'm sure I could cite it or whatever but god drat it's late.

It's been answered above, but generally creating magic items only requires the creator to either know, or just be able to cast, a spell similar to the effect of the magic item, depending on D&D edition. In 5e you need a formula and just the ability to cast a similar spell, you don't need to be a specialist wizard of any kind. If the item doesn't really replicate spells specifically you might just need to be a caster with spell slots.

Then again, Griffin explicitly isn't doing the whole "each relic embodies a school of magic" anyway, and obviously doesn't feel fettered by magic item creation rules. Relics are a concept in D&D and they tend to be pretty loosey-goosey with rules for how they're made anyway.
