Zillionaires to whom collectively 150 mil (with a shitload of strings attached) is just not that much money and is even kind of cheap if you think of it as the cost of a lottery ticket whose payoff is exclusive license to even more megabucks if it somehow takes off.

VC and real estate are two the of only investment classes with substantial above market returns these days, so huge amounts of capital have poured into both and in turn, both had become ridiculous. Bubble logic all around.

Doc Hawkins posted:Guys ive got it, let's outsource the primary function of vital defense agencies I'm not sure about the non-IT side of contracting, but in the technology field it boils down to three things: 1) The federal hiring process is one of the least-transparent and slowest-moving hiring processes in the world (try 8 months to a year from initial interview to start date for people working in the IC, regardless of clearance level or status). This has forced hiring managers to turn to contractors, who can sidestep the painful bureaucracy in order to get someone on staff in a couple of weeks. 2) The feds make the same mistake as the military by forcing management roles on people. The highest paying billets on the general schedule, GS-14 and GS-15, are almost exclusively tied to positions with leadership responsibilities. 3) As a result, the federal government really doesn't pay that well. Some agencies are authorized to use separate technical pay scales, but this is the exception, not the rule. A senior security engineer as a GS13 (really the highest grade a technical SME can hope to hold in most agencies) can expect to make, at most, around $110,000. The same person could go to most places in the private sector and make 1.5 - 2 times as much. That makes it a lot harder for the feds to attract people, while contractors CAN throw that kind of money at candidates.

We've got board certified doctors, surgeons and neurosurgeons all over my org. They're all getting paid the going rate as contractors because there's no loving way in hell you're getting a board certified neurosurgeon with 10 years of experience as an SME for anything less than 325k, and even then that's pushing it. We've got basic neuroscience clinicians making close to GS14/15 pay and they're at the bottom rung for SMEs.
