So I just took a caravan mission, which as usual got intercepted by brigands. Only, instead of going into combat with them right away they somehow fought the caravan hands alone.
So I failed the mission and then they attacked me after.

These are made using R scripts, so not a program per se but a scripting language. I'm using RStudio.
The functions I made use of are mostly the basic plotting functions. One exception is the heat map one summarizing the backgrounds. For that I used the superheat package. Part of the reason for doing this is to get more practice with that package, actually, which is also why the heat maps look a lot more polished than the box and bar plots.

I mean like there was no transition, they killed them all while I was still on the world map helplessly sitting in the cart.
Oh well, I'll pretend that my bros were asleep on the job for that one.

Does anyone have data on exactly how your reputation effects town prices?

Like, what if you have good faction rep but bad town rep? DO you use the best alternative or do they both impact prices independently?

I was interested in trying to cheatengine the values of rep but that's kind of a bitch when there's no idea what value is assigned to it. If there were numbers then we could at least find out those price percentages.

Well, if your dudes get killed during an undead invasion, they can play as undead on their own, at least.

I'd love to see goblin/Orc/Undead campaigns tbh, although it probably wouldn't fit with the nature of the game.

I wonder if you could level one guy with such good stats and gear that you could roll around with a one-man party just wrecking dudes. Obviously you'd need to have a full sized party while you level your chosen one, but it'd be an interesting challenge.

This is do-able with some effort.

I managed to locate reputation of a town by setting first scan type to "unknown initial value" and value type to "float". Haggling too much declines the contract and causes a rep hit so scan type "decreased value" after doing that. There will be a bunch of incidental address, many of which can be removed by by wandering around for a moment then scanning for type "unchanged values". Multiple contracts are very likely needed to shorten the possibilities to something sensible. Verification by checking prices of goods in market, changing the value then noting any differences in market prices

If we can better establish what the natural value ranges are then we could more easily find them. I hadn't interacted with that town much and it had a value of 55. I managed to find a noble house I hadn't interacted with much and it had a value of 45.5

Once we're able to find the reputation values easily then we can poke around with it's relationship to price of goods

Yeah but if you have crossbows and start the battle with a melee weapon equipped, your crossbow is unloaded when you swap to it. Not really a big deal if you're standing still for the turn but if you want to move or do anything other than reload and shoot you're out of luck.

Really curious about this because I enjoy hustling goods. The last game I played I tried to not haggle at all for the first few quests and then for the rest of the game no one would budge on a price. Jerks!

Back to being terrible.. My new game after reading your guide and dropping difficulty to beginner was going much smoother but I still feel like I hit a wall around day 20 where I have 3-4 guys between levels 2-4 and I'm just barely grinding enough gold to hire new guys for 800 or under. Anything more than that and I probably won't have enough gold for food/tools/medicine.

My strategy so far from the start is pick up 1-2 guys in the first town who look decent, fill the other 1-2 guys from the second town, kill hoggart. I was trying to put the first point into student, second is either pathfinder if they are an archer or the point that gives an instant character upgrade. For points I look for high rolls but I generally prioritize health/fatigue/initiative/chance to hit/melee defense.

My questions are (besides any glaring mistakes you see above): what level/stat should I aim for at day 20? After getting a towns rep up enough to get the first goal, I decided to explore the world even though I had 2k gold saved up, should I have gone for the banner instead? I ended up slowly bleeding out that gold through small upgrades and new cheap hires instead of hiring someone more powerful. I started buying better armor and weapons for my stronger guys I had planned on keeping around, which seemed to raise their fatigue too high as most of my fights last 5+ rounds and they started getting too tired. Am I managing battles poorly or rushing into stronger gear too soon?

Lastly zone of control... if someone is next to me I can't leave and take a hit every time I do? My poor archers

edit: critical strikes early on spear guys seems good, is that a waste of a point?

they get a free swing on you if you try to leave.

If they miss, you leave the zone of control and everything's fine. If you get hit, then you stay put and have to try again.

It sounds like your problems may be tactical rather than strategic. How many guys are you losing, to where you need that many new recruits? How much are you spending on equipment (armor, shields?) Are you using shield wall during fights? You may be growing your company really large too early -- don't add a recruit till you can gear a recruit.

Typically when I lose guys early on, it's bad terrain, bad gear, or I've screwed ip and not used shieldwall, or not used shield bash to clear enemies away from a teammate in danger, or not backed out of a fight I knew was too dangerous.

I need to get the basic tactics and formations section written.

I would probably lose 1-2 guys in a 6v6 almost every fight. I'm probably not using shieldwall as a group very efficiently, going to try that right now! On a side note on one of my first runs I lost a guy on the first fight, its possible :3 I just was hiring up to 6 guys after every fight since I figured I would lose any lopsided fights.

I find it's easier to get started if you just load up on farmers and other cheap dudes, maybe eight or nine of the bastards, and keep replacing them in the next town and upgrading their gear as you kill brigands.

Re: zone of control - yeah if you don't take the footwork perk you'll have to take a hit to get out of range or reposition yourself. IMO it is often worth the risk and one of the few weaknesses I've noticed with the AI so far is that they'll almost never do this.

Overwhelm is not Penetrate!

But yeah Fearsome is so you can attack the Young (only 60 to 120 armor when armored) and Berserkers three times with the lower fatigue cost regular attacks, possibly against multiple targets, and force them to flee first or get overwhelmed if they don't. You'll want to switch to penetrate once you start hitting the Warriors directly but even before that you might opt to Overwhelm them with regular attacks to keep them locked down.

But yeah you have to start getting really aggressive about looking for fights. It stops being enough to just take the quest fights, you need to take the en route fights too.
