I would totally play an open world, roaming ARPG set in TES universe. I'd pay maybe $30-35 for the F2P.

Also, I went back to Wildstar and tried out the free 80. Holy poo poo this game is still so bad. I had no idea what I was doing or what was going on. Too much poo poo on the screen. Etc. Etc.

Shut up, Nick! You're not Twilight.
This was my experince when I tried the game a second time too. The amount of poo poo the UI throws up on the screen when you log in as a returning player is absolutely obnoxious. It felt like I spent the first 20 minutes of my time after logging in clicking through an ever ending stream of unignorable pop ups for the in game help, quests, and all kinds of other garbage. All I wanted to do was check out my gear and try to remember what my skills did so I could go try to kill something and it took nearly 30 minutes to cut through all the poo poo and get outside the faction capital, and even then it felt like I was constantly having to stop doing my thing to click through a never ending stream of quest pop ups and challenges.

We usually talk about how badly Wildstar was mismanaged, the idiot raid model and a lot of other stuff but I dont think the terrible UI gets nearly enough hate. It makes the returning player experience miserable.

All your friends and foes,
they thought they knew ya,
but look who's in your heart now.
I know bringing up FFXIV in this thread as the model MMO is a tired trope at this point, but I really enjoy that it avoids all the loving pop ups and warnings and alerts that every other MMO does. Even WoW is guilty of this poo poo: if you log in right now, even if you played in the very last patch, you're presented with a giant full screen pop up, an auto accepted quest that tells you to take it, and a disembodied head starts yelling at you about how it's time to take the fight to the legion. When you're usually dealing with your addons being out of date and broken and throwing errors to top it all off, the first few minutes of resub to any MMO is usually annoying as piss. FFXIV avoids all of that poo poo and when you log in you're left to your own devices to figure out what the last quest was and get back into the swing of things. When I log in after a hiatus I want to take a few minutes to reorient myself with the controls and the feel of the world and take a moment to look around and smell the flowers, not get thrown headlong into a bunch of loving buzzers and alerts.

I can only imagine Wildstar cranks it up to 11 for the most badass of players though.

FFXIV does have active help pop ups for new features that are likely to run if you haven't played in a very long time so even your example isn't immune.

Wasn't there a Warhammer Fantasy MOBA/hero shooter thing that was made using assets taken directly from the failed MMO?

Yea, except it wasn't a real moba, it was just hero's fighting in a free for all arena fight, or maybe teams. There were no objectives, you got one hero for free, but could play others as the rotated every week, and there was no character restrictions in the game, so you could all be the same guy. It sucked and released after the mmo and died before the mmo.

It's probably a Wildstar relaunch, again. the game cost too much to make to abandon entirely so they're probably going to try to rework and rebrand and relaunch, ultimately adding a bunch of features that are nice but not fixing the game's core problems

If they relaunch under a different name and strip out all the MMO bullshit and work on the combat, sorta like the secret world is doing then it might stand a chance. It'll be a totally different game but that's all that can save it now.

The combat wasn't so bad, but the whole thing felt p janky at all levels. Like, you could see what they wanted combat to be if you squinted, but they certainly didn't get there. If they just took what they have, polished it up, then dumpstered interrupt armor and about half of the numbers from everything so it's doable with a group of friends and pubs and then left what they already made for ball kick hard mode it'd go a long way to making the game playable.

Oh and take out 90% of the challenges. Getting the occasional challenge to hoverboard down a river around geysers was cool. Getting a challenge to kill x amount of poo poo in a time limit every single time you entered a new area was tedious and grating.

DapperDraculaDeer

Shut up, Nick! You're not Twilight.
I think challenges were a really cool concept but the implementation was really bad. The last thing Wildstar needed was yet another thing popping up on the UI and interrupting play by demanding the player's immediate attention so of course they made challenges do exactly that. The failure to make the spawn rate of the mobs you needed to kill scale with local player population also really screwed it up. For a lot of challenges if another player came through simply grinding mobs for XP and killed a few of the mobs you needed it would be enough to prevent you from completing the timed challenge and lead to you wasting a few minutes of game play.

Asimo

The "best" part of challenges was how many of them were literally impossible if more than one person was leveling in the same area due to limited spawn counts.

Luckily this isn't an issue anymore. :iamafag:

Maybe Wildstar was the baby child of their largest shareholder? I can't think of any other reason it hasn't been written off.

Or some kind of tax scam. I just can't fathom a legitimate business reason to keep that anchor off the ocean floor.

Or well I guess it would but NCSoft has shown no hesitation throwing other games under the bus that haven't failed nearly as spectacularly, so who even knows.

My theory is that whatever Carbine has in interesting enough to NCSoft theyve felt it is worth it to keep Carbine's doors open and Wildstar running in order to bring the new game to market. Why they wouldnt just close Carbine and Wildstar and reopen as a new studio that doesnt have the absolutely horrid reputation Carbine does is beyond me. Marketing any game made by Carbine, the developers of Wildstar is going to be very difficult.

I like final fantasy 14, but it's by no means a "Model MMO" with just how annoying some of the systems are.

Like if I had a top 5 things that piss me off about FFXIV it would be:

The limitation placed on the overworld map by consoles is horrible, this leads me to sometimes feel I'm traveling through a series of interconnected cells rather than an actual MMO zone ala WoW.

The Map is a loving criminal travesty.

Skill bloat sometimes leaves me feeling like I'm playing a piano, not a game.

AAR leaving you stuck in a 3-4 day limbo as you grind through a hundred or so fetch quests like rubbing oil on chocobo's just so you can progress to the next expansion.

And more than anything that frustrates me is I can't just level a Scholar and heal with it if I want to succeed. I also need to level an unrelated dps class for swiftcast, and ANOTHER healing class for protect at the bare minimum. Whoever thought up the cross class skill system should be drug out into the street and shot. I don't particularly want to level a loving lancer just to be succesful with my bard. But I have to do it. It sucks, and it's stupid. Thankfully they are changing this in the expansion.

That said, it's still fun, and "At least it's not WoW" which I'm sick of.

Asimo posted:

I'm still convinced that someone who knows how MMO gamers tick could put something out. Like I could see Blizz putting out another successful MMO once they run into the hard limitations of the existing engine/server backend. Ditto for Final Fantasy. The problem with a lot of MMO developers today is that they get stuck in the X would be so cool without thinking about how the players would interact with it and if it would actually be fun. Wildstar is a great case study in this because it's pretty clear that some of their teams had a clue (Housing) and some of them had no loving clue whatsoever (The entire endgame team).

And there was a lot of stuff inserted into that game that had a lot of "Wow that's really neat" when you watch the video for it, but then you try to interact with it, it's absolutely horrible. Warplots is my favorite example of this. Custom player built pvp base vs base stuff sound kinda rad. Now you need to get 40 of your guild mates, and 40 of the other sides guil... wait where'd everyone go?
