Most autos seem to have adverse reactions to being power flushed. I'd just stick with drain and fill personally.

Have any americans imported a Canadian car? I asked in the bmw thread, but figured I would see in here.
I want to import my BMW to Hawaii, and need to know the procedure. Only gotcha is that Im a canadian.
I know how to go the other way, but not Canada to US. The car was originally US, but changed to kph only to come here.

From what I've seen since I'm all up on importings' rear end, if the car was originally sold here in the US then it can come back in from wherever with very minimal fuss, just doing the paperwork right.

Been debating whether or not to have my cars' auto transmissions serviced with a machine at the dealer, or do a drain and fill myself. Toyota wants $230 a piece to hook them up to a BG machine using (expensive) Toyota trans fluid, seems like a pretty good deal for getting almost every drop of the old poo poo out and replacing with new. I'm getting to the point now where I'd rather just pay someone to do this poo poo.

:regd08:

I'm at 215k miles with my Camry and I don't think it has ever had the auto fluid changed. Though if you've actually been changing it regularly, I don't see any reason why you'd need a real flush like that.

I have done both my tundra and Prius at home. If the cooler line is easy to get to you disconnect it and can exchange all the fluid yourself. Also valvoline maxlife synthetic atf from Walmart has worked the best in both my vehicles(and many other toyota ws applications). It's like $17/gal. I have also used the amsoil equivalent but would probably just go with Walmart valvoline in the future.

I've also heard this a lot.

If the vehicle has an external trans cooler (ie, external trans fluid lines), there's also the option of flushing new fluid in, by disconnecting a line and letting it pump out a quart or two at a time, shutting it off and refilling the trans fluid pan as you go. E: kinda beaten

I wouldn't I would go with the drain and fill and drain and fill again after x miles approach.

Yeah, I came to the same conclusion. I get excited quickly. I think I'm going to continue passively looking and see if anything shows up within 100 miles this spring and summer and if not, wait until next year to keep looking.

That one just has a bunch of new parts, looks good in the pictures and is a good price. I hope I can find one like that again.

It's a passive machine, it just exchanges old fluid for new. The advantage is getting all the old poo poo out. I could drain fill, drain fill but :effort:

Yep, this. Especially if there's a drain plug on the trans or trans pan. It's easy mode.

Ok, so this may be really dumb but transmission chat brought it to mind. I have 239k on my truck's transmission and it's on the original fluid. I've got relatives saying that if I change it then I'll mess it up because "it's used to the grit in there."

These same folks responded "lack of maintenance" when my wife's transmission died suddenly.

So, it needs to be changed, but if I drain and replace the filter and add the right fluid back, I should be fine, right?

lack of maintenance with a sudden lack of having the grit it's used to will help it die that much quicker.

Do you have a website or something where there's list of necessary papers?
My googling brings up mostly US-> Canada, which Ive done before.

In the e61, US speedos are dual marking, but the canadian ones are KPH only. Plus they can have symbols instead of english text.

Sad fact...they don't at least they don't any more. I drive through the area daily and have can't remember ever seeing a kph sign. When taking I75 South into Knoxville there is a sign that is in both, I took way too long finding this stupid thing on google maps to not post it...

When I first moved to DFW (1997), DNT (Dallas North Tollway) used to have signs for exits labeled in... tenths of a mile.

It's almost like they wanted to plan for moving to metric, but decided to just half rear end it. IIRC they did away with that around 99. No other roads here that I know of did that.

The sign in the opposite direction going to Chattanooga does the same, as well as the one for Nashvilla/Chattanooga.
