Being an aristocrat is BWM. Look at all these complaints.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/a...k&ICID=ref_fark

quote:

There are the enormous running costs, for one thing, and it’s a full-time job (seriously) managing the staff. Add to that punitive taxes, worries about the next generation and the constant need for repairs and, they say, living in a fabulous mansion does not make for a very easy life.

We can’t afford to put the heating on, so we wear big jumpers instead. I can’t remember the last time we went on holiday.
Money is very tight, with annual maintenance and upkeep alone costing £200,000.

This is terrible and they should sell and get a cheaper home. Oh no look at the heating and electrical costs.

quote:

Heating costs £40,000 a year. Electricity was £60,000, but we recently spent £500,000 on a hydro-electricity system so we can produce our own.

You see they're going broke, hold on, half a million pounds on a hydro power system?

quote:

But still, we have occasionally had to sell off key pieces to meet bills, such as a 2,000-year-old statue of Venus, which we sold at auction for £8 million.

Yeah they're obviously poor as gently caress. It's a hard life being paupers. :v:

What's the quickest way you've seen someone gently caress up their life?

Some of the things in that thread are truly awesome and terrible to behold.

quote:

A friend of mine was sure he was going to be a pro overwatch player. Dropped out of school before the game even came out. Now he has no money, no education and no job.

quote:

This happened in a 2 week period.

A friend of mine lost his kitchen job due to layoffs. Looked in the paper for a job he could get quick so he can make his bills, rent, etc. Finds a listing for a company looking for a driver/delivery person asap, he has a car so he figures it would be a good quick fix. Calls and gets the job over the phone and is told he starts the next evening. Gets a "company" cellphone and does his first pick-up. Turns out its an escort agency and he's picking up and dropping off the talent. Does this for a few nights and starts getting to know the girls. Turns out they're all addicted to crack - big surprise. They get the idea in his head that he's doing all the ground work so he might as well post the ads himself and get his own phone and they'll work for him. So we're about week into this adventure and he's gone from line cook to pimp. Fast forward a couple of days into pimping and he comes to the conclusion that all these girls spend their money on is crack so why not cut out the middle man and start paying them in what they want? He doesn't know where to get crack but his kitchen buddies can hook him up with coke. Gets a bag of coke and googles how to make crack (yes really). Whips up a batch of kitchen crack and then is concerned that maybe he didn't make it correctly - so logically he should try it first before giving it to his ladies. 36 hour crack binge later, he's hooked and proceeds to sell off everything including the car and phone in the next few days. I dropped by his place to hang out around day 10 (I had no idea any of this was going on), he meets me at the door explains what he's been up to for the past few days and says he doesn't want me there unless I'd like to pay and hook up with one of the crackheads in his living room - strangely I declined.

Last time I saw him he was cracked out yelling at people for change on a downtown street.

14 days and his entire life turned to garbage.

quote:

This may not be as bad as some of the other answers, but a friend of mine took out a loan for $250,000 (I promise, I am not exaggerating this number) to pay for her "dream wedding" to a guy she had known for 3 months. They got divorced after less than a year and she is still in debt from it.

That thread is gold

quote:

This just reminded me of a guy I know...much different story, but similar mindset and foolishness...

Dude was in his mid-30s, decent job, wife, kids, etc... One day he decides he's unhappy with his job so he decides to quit and pursue his dream job...of being an NFL head coach. No coaching experience, no real football experience outside of playing a few years in high school and watching on TV...and determined to only take a job as HEAD coach at the top level.

We all asked him why he was doing this, and he was just like, "gotta follow your dreams, right? If you put your mind to it you can accomplish anything!".

We were all like, "No...you're not a 6 year old. Reality is that you're too old and too stupid to EVER come close to being an NFL coach."

Long story short (this was about a decade ago), he has not become an NFL coach and has now bounced around at lovely jobs just trying to support his family.

quote:

A good friend of mine hosed his life up, and so no one repeats it, I'd like to share the story.

Went out to the clubs with his friends and girlfriend (soon to be fiance). The buddy that was supposed to drive got lucky and ran off with some girl, leaving him and his girlfriend stranded. Drunk, high, and not thinking, he decided to just drive home. In that instant, he hosed up his life.

On a road he's driven a thousand times, he was speeding, doing nearly 100. He hit the train tracks he's driven over a thousand times, but at 100, it was enough to launch the car in the air. It landed on the front bumper and somersaulted a few times before landing upside down.

He broke his back, legs, hip, face, and was in a coma for a few days. When he woke up, he was handcuffed to the bed.

His girlfriend didn't survive. They knew he was driving. They took his blood, they knew how hosed up he was. They knew his speed from the marks on the road. "Conscious disregard for human life" was the term they used when they let him know he was being charged with murder.

He was an athlete, but wasted away to under 100lbs, and still struggles to get around. Being in a car gives him panic attacks, he screams at the sound of car horns. His girlfriend's family never forgave him, in fact, they smeared his reputation. His mother disowned him. His father, a lawyer, called in every favor he had and re-mortgaged his house to post bail and defend him. His trial dragged on for years as he fell into depression and developed a severe painkiller addiction.

This happened over 10 years ago, he's still in jail. He spent all of his 20's in and out of court/jail/rehab.

quote:

A kid at my school OD on heroine, but hold on it gets deeper.

I went middle school with this kid and played on the same baseball team as him for a wlhile. He was always that kid that hung with the wrong crowd, but was a good guy, and he was incredibly good at baseball. So good that he had a few scholarship offers in his junior year. He was always trying to make people laugh and lend a helping hand to whoever needed it. Nobody that knew him had a bad thing to say about him. At some point he started getting into harder and harder drugs and eventually turned to heroine. I met his mom a handful of times, and she was as nice as he was. I heard rumors of his stepdad being abusive so this may explain why he turned to it.

After about half a year on the drug he decided to change his life around and get his poo poo together. He started dating a very nice girl that was nothing like his normal group of friends, and she helped him out tremendously. She was honestly heaven sent for him, and the only reason he got off it initially.

Around the first week back from winter break he got into an argument with a friend of his and they almost fought. For some reason he decided to relapse and texted his old dealer for some H. The dealer called up the kid that he was arguing with and said: "Hey man if you two are still arguing I can give him something dirty." The kid replied: "Give him some dirty poo poo."

He ODed that night and died. The autopsy says that he had ingested 100% fentanyl.

Who cares? Especially when you're dead. I think that's a big minus.

I've stopped a fair few people from driving drunk. One time I woke up with a hangover and a set of car keys in my pocket. Apparently someone was going to drive drunk so they took their keys and passed them to me. No chance of drunk driving when that happens.

Police in Germany have charged a man suspected of being behind an attack on the Borussia Dortmund team bus.
Rather than having links to radical Islamism, he was a market trader hoping to make money if the price of shares in the team fell, prosecutors say.

So I suppose trying to game the stock market is GWM, but using explosives - and making your share purchases from the same hotel as the players were staying in - not so much. Also, although my stock market knowledge isn't brilliant, by my reckoning he only made about 5k euro profit (15,000 put options and the share price only dropped 30 cents) which probably barely covered his hotel stay.

WITNESS ME!

A story from my job: "How to lose your easy job in one sentence"

We had two truck drivers at my shop. One is an older Polish guy and one is a younger Mexican fellow. We've all survived 8 rounds of layoffs, so at this point we're all considered 'cream of the crop'. This can go to some peoples' heads and make them cocky about how secure they are here. A lot of the time, the truck drivers kinda hang out in shipping and play on their phones, drink coffee, and bullshit on the clock. Typical machine shop stuff.

Our younger driver was out on a delivery to a customer and the receivers were all on break. Nobody would receive the shipping ticket until they were back on the clock. So, instead of just sitting in the truck and playing on his phone, like they all do when they have gently caress-all to do in the shop, he proceeds to blow up at the clerk and say the following: "Why don't you just sign the loving paper so I can unload this poo poo?". That guy got on the phone to his boss, who got on the phone to his boss, who called our account manager. Our young driver had no job by the time he pulled in the gate. You could see our operations manager pacing the shipping office for hours waiting for that guy to get back.

Cursing at the customer: bad with life.

Bonus Schadenfreude: our trucks are all flatbeds so a CDL is not required in this state, so he didn't have one. All that experience driving and no CDL. I suspect he won't collect unemployment since I'd expect he was fired 'with cause'.

E: the breaktime over there is supposedly 15 minutes, so that's the maximum he would've had to wait. That kind of time could be easily killed in Houston traffic.

Ironically, U.S. dollars were on a very firm gold standard in 1875. The problem was that all currency was issued by individual banks*.

The actual bills were issued by individual banks up until the 1930s. If a local bank went bust, so did (possibly) the money in your pocket. This got a lot better post-civil-war, because they forced banks to keep some fraction of their issued currency in federal reserve bonds, but it was a long way from being 100% solid.

Same with the "credit system." They're not talking about soliciting Dunn and Bradstreet numbers, or accepting Diner's Club International cards. They're talking about letting customers run up tabs and pay them down, or just straight up pay in IOUs. (In the 18th and 19th centuries, it wasn't uncommon to sign over 3rd party checks and 3rd party IOUs to pay for consumer goods!)

--

* this is still kinda/sorta true if you think about it. When you put your dollars into a checking account, you are exchanging real dollars issued by the federal reserve for bank-denominated dollars, which could lose all of their value in the event the bank goes bust. What's changed is 1.) your deposits are insured up to a certain amount and 2.) even if you lose your checking account, at least the cash in your pocket is still valid.

Well there was a big push against fiat (or rather bimetallism, the predecessor) back then too because the gold standard predominately benefitted the rich and they wanted to make sure it stayed that way. There's a whole bunch of great propaganda about it too
