again, this presumes that you'd see the current home timey corner mcd's be replaced by an oversized vending machine, which is never going to happen ever for the social acceptance reasons you mention. they've already started demoing like vending machines that spit out big macs but they're being very limited in scope precisely because they fear this sort of backlash. i haven't heard any conclusions from the experiment yet, which in and of itself is conspicuous because if it was being raved about you'd think they'd have said something by 3 months into the experiment.

what will probably actually happen is that one day the back kitchen area you see today will have a curtain in front of it, which the remaining meatbags will be told to never comment on or regard as strange, and the slides where your food comes out will occasionally emit quiet whirring and clicking instead of profane tirades in high-pitched teenager voices or spanish.

This is also, of course, ignoring the biggest problem being the fact that people fundamentally don't want to interact with robots and are extremely uneasy with the thought of ones that act eerily human

This is bad, but the real problem is the ones that DO want to interface entirely with machines, because that means they're almost certainly stealing a bunch of poo poo from you somehow

Basically the biggest problem with automating fast food, or any restaurant really, is that the people attempting it and the people who believe it is inevitable also believe that it is low skill work that is as simple as mashing a button over and over. This is extremely not the case. Same goes for stuff like picking fruits and veggies

Just because it's a black box doesn't make it magic. We're neural networks, anything we can learn can be learned by one of them with the right training conditions and reward function, and you don't need to recreate the whole brain for jobs that can be defined in some limited way.

Short order cooks and janitors, despite being paid like poo poo and derided, exercise a high degree of judgment and make a lot of independent decisions in a typical work day. Computers don't handle unknown unknowns very well.
