A 12-year-old boy attempting to drive a car from New South Wales across Australia to Perth has been arrested by police at Broken Hill.

The boy was pulled over on the Barrier Highway after police noticed his car's bumper was dragging along the road in New South Wales' far west on Saturday.

He had apparently already driven already driven more than 1,000 kilometres, beginning on the east coast.

"Checks revealed the driver to be a 12-year-old boy travelling from Kendall, NSW, on his way to Perth," police said in a statement.

Police said the boy was taken to Broken Hill Police Station, and that inquiries were continuing.

It's true but only half the time. People like QM for example get into council because their ambition is to connect with and serve the community in some capacity even if it isn't the wonderful levels of state and federal government, and we shouldn't dump on councils given how they actually do the things often promised and never delivered by higher tiers. Yes, there are useless infighting people, some councils are not so lucky. Maybe do something about your local guys?

Alternatively be good like the ACT and just merge State and Local Governments (or be like Brisbane and actually pay your Councillors a decent salary to stop them getting kickbacks from developers).

The obvious example would be to just say "Sydney lol" and that would be pretty safe since I haven't lived there in ages. That is the exact example I would have gone to as well.

^A good salary doesn't stop kickbacks for people who are simply greedy. Case in point: federal government.

Baby you can shout at me,
But you can't need my eyes.
The idea that councils are run by developers is frankly dumb. In Victorian cases where councils call in planning applications for a decision rather than leaving the decision delegated to the planning officers, the vast majority are to refuse a permit due to community opposition. Councils approving a development when officers recommended it be refused are vanishingly rare.

A majority, including the mayor, of my local councillors are developers or agents. They're nominally independent but they're the only fuckers who have money to spend on political campaigns.

North Korean threats will leave alliance countries little choice

quote:

Australia doesn't usually need much encouragement to partner with the US in whatever righteous military conflict it deems just. We've done so in every major conflict since WWI.

Obviously some have been more justified than others.
But the idiosyncratic nuclear-armed regime of Kim Jong-un has just provided the most comprehensive justification possible for a US-led pre-emptive assault: a clearly stated threat of nuclear strike on Australia.

Yikes.

quote:

Some in Australia will counter that the North Korean bully-boy is merely bluffing. Others will question the DPRK's technical know-how, and therefore its ability to carry out its threat of a nuclear strike.

And some may even be persuaded by Pyongyang's petulant ultimatum: that Australia should separate from the US because that alliance has made us more vulnerable.

There are sound arguments for a more independent foreign policy than the approach Australia has pursued to date. But they are for another day. Confronted by a genocidal aggressor-state threatening thermo-nuclear annihilation, this would be a bizarre time to seek distance. Australia has skin in this game.

I particularly like the "some may argue the threats are not credible or realistic, but you know what? gently caress you guys, bring on WW3".

In fairness, you could absolutely consider their whole prison camp "take three generations of your family" system genocidal. There are scholarly definitions of genocide that don't limit it specifically to ethnic groups and refer instead to classes or groups of people, in which case yeah, it absolutely is genocidal.

I mean yeah the idea that North Korea is in any way a serious threat to Australia is laughable, but it isn't a huge stretch to accuse it of being genocidal.
