The very quick rise of Mélenchon is indication that the division is very much "populists vs centrists", with the main issue being a strong EU resentment that established parties are unable to appeal to.

none of the left candidates this election were milquetoast centrists really, hamon was leftist, he just was very uncharimastic unfortunately

i'm not sure how uncharismatic hamon is rather than his vote being split between a strong leftist and traitor macron. i really dunno why he didn't get more votes other than the bang up job macron and hollande did ruining the name of the PS.

edit: like why was macron running as independent in any case? melenchon is a bit expected considering he had very little power in PS, but macron was high up in the PS so why'd he abandon it?

hamon is much further center compared to Mélenchon. Universal basic income, more democratic systems and the legalization of pot sounds to me like:

What about taxing robots, pushing for democratisation of management of the Euro (and stopping CETA/TTIP), re-insourcing government supply chains, shortening the working week, and tightening environmental regs, which he also backed?

Of hamon and Mélenchon, Hamon seemed more like bernie. I would've been fine with him but he was betrayed by his own party :/

Hamon worked for PS for years, unlike Bernie wrt the Dems, and he's to the left of him, so it's a bit of facile comparison.

Of course, but it's easier to give people an idea of their ideology than "Hamon is socialist, and so is valls, and so was macron".

sexual indiscretions are not exactly a disqualifying breach of ethics in, well, anything in most of europe, regardless of how many people they harm

This is apparently not that big a deal in France? One of my exes talked about how the doctors in her office were all having really obvious affairs, and that she didn't care for it even though most people didn't care

yes, in basically all of southern europe (which includes france for the sake of this discussion), sexual indiscretions are only shameful if you act ashamed about them. if someone is otherwise popular and handsome enough they can get away with loving 15 year olds because it's TECHNICALLY over the age of consent or whatever. if you have a spouse or they do, well that's just too goddamn bad now isn't it, should've watched your man or woman a little more closely and hosed them how they want, huh

it's really funny to watch some people attribute this to 'puritanical prudishness of america' but surprisingly enough adultery and kiddie diddling has some pretty well documented consequences that are all bad.

I'd would be good if the parties which claims to represent an ideology to either represent that ideology or go gently caress off and die somewhere.

Looks like they choose the second option.
