I guess producing mediocre defensive numbers when you got names like Seabrook, Keith, and Hjallmarsson on the roster might be enough to veto the friend card.

Oh no doubt there was cause to fire him, but if you believe another beat (Christopher Hine), this wasn't Q's call and he's mad that Kitchen got fired. So there might be some interesting behind the scenes drama with the front office and coaching staff.

Guess it will have to do for Hawks fans after the early exit!

Leafs done good. I'm pretty pleased with how they played. They did get lucky with lack of injuries this year, and other teams who were expected to be better in the division under performing, and I worry about the potential sophomore slump for some of the rookies (if that's even a real thing), but if they can improve the D I think they'll do well. Matthews is a much better player than I thought he was earlier in the season.

I have the Leafs one saved in a folder on my desktop for easy access.

-e- Reflecting upon it, I haven't really had too many times where I felt it necessary to use that this season which is a good thing.

Sorry to break it to you dude but he makes $2.5M against the cap, not $1.25M.

Seriously, anyone wants to tell me how great Lou/Shanny whatever have been and it's poo poo like this and re-upping Polak that are pretty glaring. People like to downplay bad 4th line and depth D signings but there's no such thing as an unimportant roster spot anymore.

Initially I was under the impression that Martin could score a little to go with his hitz but he's done jack poo poo for the Leafs and yea, just wastes a roster spot. His one year with NYI scoring 10 fooled me (and Lou apparently).

You can still do full movement and have strength with zero ACL, it's just unstable and requires a knee brace. I'm not sure if the same is true of the MCL and the combination of both seems super-human to me. Add on top of that all the pain he had to be in and it's just shocking that he could compete. Even pain drugs only do so much and they have a lot of side effects that deteriorate performance.

Actually if the ACL is torn completely there's often actually no pain at all, because it's just gone. Same with the MCL. The really painful ones are the partial tears.

But yeah, the fact that he would have had zero knee stability, that's a pretty big thing.

It's about finding that next group of core players we can win with in the next 6, 8, 10 years. Let's face it, it's hard for 20-, 21-, 22-year-olds to lead an NHL team. Look at the playoffs.

Martin's (valuable) calling card was supposed to be very good shot suppression but I have no idea how that's held up this year.

Matt Martin was an integral part of a great energy line that was easily the Leafs most consistent, and you can't see the value of his forechecking ability and the fact that he's the only Leaf that consistently finishes his hits then please stop giving opinions on Hockey.

Claims that Kitchen's firing were a surprise to Q:

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/blackhawks-coach-joel-quenneville-upset-assistants-firing-report-221533261.html

quote:

Multiple league sources told the Tribune the decision to fire Kitchen did not originate with Quenneville and that Quenneville was upset and surprised by the move. Kitchen’s firing is likely to re-ignite conflict between Quenneville and Bowman and the rest of the front office, conflict over coaching and personnel that existed before the Hawks won Cups in 2013 and 2015, two championships that helped maintain peace in the organization.

Sources said Bowman likely fired Kitchen to re-assert authority over personnel in the Hawks organization and send everyone a message, including Quenneville, going into next season. Bowman said Saturday Quenneville, who has a contract through the 2019-20 season, would return as coach.

Bowman’s decision to fire Kitchen was also likely a move in self-preservation to pacify a demand for change coming from the upper reaches of the Hawks organization, such as President John McDonough.

Once Ben Smith was banished and Boyle and Kapanen were on the Fourth, Martin was easily the worst player on the team. Boyle, Kapanen, Kadri, Soshnikov and Komarov all hit quite consistently and contribute in other ways. Martin falls down a lot and sometimes loses a fight. His contract makes him look worse.
