Who wants a belly rub??

Inspired by Tourist's commentary like 50 pages ago. I don't get to do creative writing very often so what the hell. Some slight liberties taken with timings. Consider this a form of atonement for me submitting a plan that's likely to get a whole bunch of you killed.

Excerpt from video recording of interview with Applicant #1037 for Hayard-Gunnes for position of Combat Aviator. Interview performed at HG field office in Lubango, Angola; two HG staff participating. Transcription performed by administrative staff for historical records at the end of HG's Angolan campaign.

quote:

HG1: Tell us about your background.
[HG2 flips through paperwork.]
A1037: I applied to the United States Air National Guard but was unable to qualify for pilot for health reasons. I worked on getting pilot certifications through college instead, but I couldn't manage to afford my own aircraft.
HG2: What did you learn on?
A1037: A 172 with additional type qualification for a Caravan, as my flight school offered that as an optional extra course after IFR and multi-engine qualification.
HG1: Please continue.
A1037: Post-college I failed to find anything that felt like it called to me, so I decided to travel the world for a bit. I was passing through Egypt when a local charter airline had a posting for a, uh, short run contract service. I applied and was accepted. I flew a King Air 200 off and on for about two years.
HG1: And now you're in Angola?
A1037: Honestly, I had some pretty great times working there. It didn't pay reliably, or well, but it was interesting. But interesting isn't always enough, right? A man's gotta get paid. So I went to looking what else in the area was hiring. I got myself hired by another charter line running out of Angola instead. The pay was better. This was before the war really went bad.
HG2: Were you aware of the tensions in the area?
A1037: Yeah, but I was assuming I was invincible. The proverbial jury's still out on me, but that charter airline wasn't. They folded about a month ago. Took the planes, and several months of pay I was owed, with them. I got left behind here.
HG2: Why apply to work with us?
A1037: I've made enough friends here to want to help out. I saw what you guys did in Tibet. That was incredible. I also trust you to actually pay me.
HG1: You said yourself you were disqualified from military service on medical grounds. What issue was in contention?
A1037: Is disclosing this specific information a condition of my employment?
HG2: No.
A1037: I prefer not to say. I instead refer to the enclosed references as evidence of my ability to operate an aircraft.
HG1: What makes you think we'd take you, especially if you won't tell us?
A1037: Not every position is as difficult on you- your body, as the supersonic fighters. I wouldn't mind something low key, or, you know, one of the aircraft the flyboys generally think is beneath them. [Pause] I did hear a rumor you guys bought some cheap UAVs a while ago.
HG2: Where did you hear this?
A1037: Twitter. Or are you still denying that frigate thing, too?
[HG1 and HG2 exchange apprehensive glances]
HG1: Would you be willing to sign a non-disclosure agreement?
A1037: Yes.
[HG2 passes A1037 paperwork. A1037 signs.]
[HG1 examines a document titled 'Pilot Assignment Queue'. Most names are listed under aircraft that HG does not own or operate.]
HG1: We also recently acquired an MQ-9. So far nobody has stepped up to operate it.
A1037: I'd be interested in that.
HG2: Have you ever operated a remote-piloted aircraft before?
A1037: Not outside of a sim.
HG1: In addition to traditional piloting, like what you've experienced, you would be called on primarily to perform observation and rec-
[HG1 is cut off by the sound of a VC10 landing]
A1037: What about that one?
HG1: Already spoken for.
A1037: Anything I can do to help. The Reaper - it is named Reaper, right? - would be fine by me. Also isn't that the thing that has a system called Gorgon Stare? I'm in on that name alone.
HG2: When can you start?
A1037: Where do I sign?
[HG1 whispers to HG2. The two shrug and produce additional paperwork. Approximately 17 minutes is spent as all three parties sign it.]
HG1: Do you have an existing callsign?
A1037: Before I was rejected by the Air National Guard I was nicknamed Fresh Meat by one of the existing pilots that bumped into me. I don't know why, as I'm pretty sure she called everybody who wasn't accepted yet that, but it stuck on me. Briefly, anyway. Except just Meat, I think because nobody wanted to be quite that demeating. Demeaning, I meat- ugh. Anyway Meat.
[HG1 gives a quizzical stare. HG2 fills in 'MEAT' under the callsign field of the application. HG2 would later claim to not know why this was filed in all caps.]
HG2: Let's show you your new bird then, shall we?
A1037: So wait, did you sink that frigate or not?

Pilot's log, MEAT, entry #4

quote:

I've been here for a little while now. We just had the first combat op I've participated in. It was... not what I expected. Certainly not as glamorous as the guys flying the Gripens. No, my job is to fly in a circle a slight bit off the ground and call targets out to our Phantoms and the other guys with bombs and Mavericks and what not. Somebody's gotta do it, though. If nobody had done that, we would have lost a lot of people and hardware to some rocket artillery vehicles that were angling to fire a salvo at us.
I can't decide if it's easier or harder to not be the guy actually pulling the trigger when it's still your call that gets the bomb dropped and your laser that guides it in and your camera that watches the BMP, or truck, or squad of infantry suddenly get vaporized by a GBU-24. It's actually pretty fuckin' morbid. On the plus side this thing handles better than I ever expected it to, and that observation pod is incredible. I can't even begin to describe it. I was birdwatching afterward while the thing autopiloted its way home. On the other hand I nearly crapped myself when halfway through the op I saw the link show a pair of Floggers passing overhead, but I guess their radar was too old or not pointed in the right direction to spot me down in the weeds, and they didn't last very long after that. It was a veritable meteor shower up there! I was briefly worried about having to dodge debris. Wait, meteor shower. Meteors. I'm gonna have to remember that one at breakfast tomorrow.
So far nobody's complained about or taken down my "Meat Locker" sign for the Reaper's trailer, so that's good. I'm still not sure who's assigned to operate the other two UAVs. I've never seen anyone go into that trailer the whole time I've been here despite it being right across the walking path. For that matter I don't even know where those UAVs themselves are. I hope they didn't forget them in Tibet.
I'm also pretty sure the Meat Locker is haunted. The other guys say only one man's been KIA'ed by hostile fire before I got here, so maybe that guy just really hates drones. Or really likes them. Nasty stuff, that; he apparently got nailed over water but SAR couldn't find him. We're not sure if he ejected or not.
Speaking of, I did get to watch four people I'd just met get shot down on this op. I barely knew them, but I feel like that only makes it harder. Makes this whole conflict feel even more inhuman than it already did. Doubly so when you just watch it on the low-res displays the AEW system feeds back here and hear it over the radio instead of seeing it in person. I barely know if I belong here, with that whole not being African thing, and it just feels so... alien. If nobody flattens this camp and kills me like they tried to earlier today I think I'll follow this crew onto their next op when they leave. Assuming they take me.

Mutiny!?! More like "reinterpreted orders"
One thing I will remind people of is that the air-to-air threat has escalated enormously.

The Dictator is now flying Su-27s, MiG-23s and modern F-16s (possibly this model [). The MiGs are less of a worry, but the Flankers and the F-16s are scarier threats. The F-16s are as good as, if not slightly better than our Gripens in weapons, sensors, and maneuverability.

We can't seriously challenge them in an air-to-air role with out Phantoms. Only our Gripens can do that job.

Not to beat a dead horse, but we're seeing why buying so few Gripens and Tornadoes was a bad idea. Last mission, we saw Gripen demonstrate their standoff air-to-air capability with Meteor. If we'd had more Gripens, we'd have had better CAP and probably wouldn't have lost that Tornado to the MiG. And with their Taurus missiles, the Tornadoes have the best standoff air-to-ground capability. That's exactly what we need to kill the S-300 and the diamond truck.

I will say, the Reaper has been very handy, I wish I'd thought to pick it up sooner.

Proposal: Reverse Isiah Mustafa
(Look down. Look up. Your diamonds are now explosions.)

This plan includes Falafel Ranger. https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3815107&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=91#post471691682
2x JAS 39C Gripen, 1x Sperwer UAV, 1x EA-6B Prowler, 1x Tornado IDS: Operation Falafel Ranger.

2x JAS 39C Gripen, "Pita"
Equipment: Meteor, Max Intercept. (4x Meteor, 2x IRIS-T, 3x Drop Tank)
Mission:
1. Provide air escort to aircraft in Falafel Ranger.
2. Upon completion of Falafel Ranger, continue to provide CAP for friendly forces in the area until Winchester.
Flight Plan:
- Follows Falafel Ranger plan
- Remember to tanker up before ingress.
- Be extremely careful if engaging hostile air contacts when in range of the S-300. If you stray out of OECM range, the S-300 will start shooting missiles into the fray. If that starts to happen, get to safety ASAP.

1x Sperwer UAV, "Arbiter"
Mission:
1. Locate the diamond convoy
2. Second to "Falafel Ranger" if needed.
Flight plan:
1. Stage and forward deploy as close to the diamond convoy location as possible
2. Transit to the search area at minimum altitude.
3. When at the search area, pop up to 1000 feet AGL to search for the convoy. (Remember to check "Terrain Following" since the geography is already at 5000 feet ASL)
4. When the target is located, withdraw to 20-30 nautical miles to maintain eyes on target.
5. Egress at minimum altitude.
Extra:
If needed, second to Falafel Ranger to ensure mission success.

1x Tornado IDS, "A Horse"
Loadout: Taurus KEPD (2x Taurus, 2xIRIS-T)
Mission:
1. Destroy the diamond convoy.
Flight plan:
1. Loiter near tanker assets.
2. When the diamond convoy is located, proceed to engage. Avoid known AA.
Extra:
- If possible, program the Taurus cruise missiles to avoid known AA, and to search for the target along its expected path. (Shift-F1 manual target. Select the cruise missile in the the top-right panel. Under the panel there is a button to "Plot Course," which allows setting waypoints for cruise missiles. The Taurus cannot be retasked in flight.)

1x MQ-9 Reaper, "Meat"
Loadout: Gorgon Stare EO/IR pods.
Mission:
1. Locate hostile Dictator and Bulgarian ground forces in the vicinity of the Bulgarian Advance.
Flight Plan:
1. Forward deploy to the search area.
2. Search for hostile ground forces in the search area. Stay above 30,000 feet, and try to stay 30-40 nautical miles south of hostile forces.
3. Avoid hostile anti-air and fighter threats.
Extra:
EMCOM is to keep Radar OFF.

8x F-4E Phantom II, "Sledgehammer"
Loadout: GBU-24 (2x GBU-24, 2x AMRAAM, Litening TGP, DECM, 3x Drop Tanks)
Mission:
1. BAI and CAS hostile Dictator and Bulgarian ground forces in the target area. Priority:
1.1. SA-2 and SA-3 covering the Bulgarian advance only
1.2. Other SAMs and AAA in the target area.
1.3. Armor
1.4. Mechanized vehicles
1.5. Infantry and other targets
2. Engage air targets of opportunity
Extra:
Stay at high altitude when possible. Automatic Evasion is authorized.
WRA: 2 Paveways for all ground targets.

2x Hawk 209, "Salesman"
Loadout: 2x AGM-65G Maverick. (2x AGM-65G, 2xSidewinder)
2x Su-25T Frogfoot, "OxyClean"
Loadout: AT-16 Scallion (16xVikhr, 2xAA-8, 2x Drop Tank)
Mission:
1. BAI and CAS hostile Dictator and Bulgarian ground forces in the target area. Priority:
1.1. Low-threat SAMs and AAA in the target area.
1.2. Armor
1.3. Mechanized Forces
1.4. Other targets of opportunity
Extra:
Avoid high-threat AA like SA-2, SA-3, and Tunguska.

6x SK 60B, "Croaker"
Loadout: 145 mm Rockets (6x M/49 145 mm Rockets)
Mission:
1. BAI and CAS hostile Dictator and Bulgarian ground forces in the target area. Priority:
1.1. Soft Vehicles
1.2. Infantry or other soft targets of opportunity
Avoid all known AA threats.
Note: I'm hoping that the bigger rockets might help give them a bigger punch.

4x JAS-39C Gripen, "High CAP"
Loadout: Meteor, Max Intercept. (4x Meteor, 2xIRIS-T, 3x Drop Tank)
Mission:
1. Provide CAP for friendly aircraft in theatre.
Extra:
- Station altitude at maximum.
- Pilots are allowed to chase hostile aircraft to the deck, remember to uncheck altitude to "Auto" if that happens.
- Avoid high-threat SAMs (SA-2, SA-3, SA-20).

1x S 100B Argus (AEW)
Mission:
1. Provide airborne early warning and control.
2. Locate S-300 site using ELINT.

1x KC-135, 1x VC.10
Mission:
- Provide tanker support at an appropriate location.

Extra ROE:
Mission tanker settings plus joker fuel setting should be no more than 20%. (eg: Mission tanker 10% + Joker 10%. Or mission tanker 0% + Joker 20%.)
If Operation Falafel Ranger fails to destroy the S-300 site, draw a no-navigation zone around it with at least a 90 nmi radius.

Down the Throat

Pre-deploy the Reaper with Gorgon Stare pods to Point Avalanche. Advance north until the convoy is spotted or the path crosses anti-air range.

Launch two Gripens with maximum Meteor loads with orders to loiter over the airport. They are not to leave the area and fire at any hostiles that come in range. Bingo at 5% and quick turn around for Winchester.

Load remaining Gripens with maximum air-to-air and all other attack craft capable of mid-air refueling with maximum SEAD and CAS as appropriate. Proceed with the Growler, Big Pig and the AWACS to Point Avalanche. Rally and refuel, match speeds, and have combat elements proceed north. Enemy anti-air is to be eliminated at maximum range with minimum force. Once we can confirm lack of anti-air over the Bulgarian ground forces, launch SKB60s for CAS operations against ground forces.

Bomb the diamond convoy at the highest range. Once destroyed, weapons free on the Bulgarian forces.

If the SA-20 Gargoyle is spotted, engage in plan Infidel.

Infidel:

Engage jamming with the Growler. Vector directly towards the Gargoyle. Launch the first missiles at maximum range, then raise speed to the maximum. Once a plane is out of missiles to fire, break at 90 degrees until out of range and return to Avalanche. Once destruction is confirmed return to the plan and complete operations.

Those Phantoms are really good for $15M each. Saving that $140M for two Gripens paid for a lot of stuff to fill holes, like good AA for our airbase and that MQ-9. I guess we'll see how it turns out for this mission. I do expect that after this mission there won't be as many high-end fighter threats facing us.

(Rationale: The range of the S-300 battery is 110 nm. If it's deployed with the Bulgarians, then there is at least a small space in the west of the country out of its range--we can use this space to give our airbase some breathing room and help Von Hoff's forces.)
Flight GOLD: Any CAS aircraft capable of quick turnaround (probably Frogfoots w/Scallions, SK-60Bs w/135mm Rockets OR Gun Pods). One pass of CAS/BAI on immediate targets near Angolan 9th.
Flight SILVER: 2x Tornados, w/Taurus KEPR OR HARMs. Will form up with Flight BLUE during the next Phase.
Flight RED: 2x Gripens, w/SDBs. Will form up with Flight BLUE during the next Phase

Phase 3: GEMSTONE
Objective: Search and destroy the S-300 and (optionally) Tunguska sites. Minimum viable damage to S-300 site is destruction of Tomb Stone radar. ETC: 4 hours
Flights BLUE, SILVER and RED will form up, refuel at tanker, switch on jammers and fly an east-west-east search pattern parallel to the border, above the 3rd, 5th, and 19th Regiments. It will start 40 nm south from the border, then move increasingly closer in a "lightning bolt" pattern, until the emissions from the S-300 are spotted. If the S-300 is spotted, all ordnance will be fired at it in one volley. Be prepared to micromanage this! If any ordnance is (somehow) still available, fire on Tunguskas as secondary target (if visible), then any other targets.

Phase 4: CULTURE
Objective: search and destroy Tunguska. ETC: 1 hour
Flight LUCAS: 8x Phantoms w/2000lb Paveways. BAI/CAS, with Tunguska as the priority target. Altitude restriction--do not fly below 36000 ft! Advisory: Tunguskas come in two per platoon. Assume the Bulgarians are bringing more than one platoon to defend the S-300. Transfer to CAP role when Paveways are expended.
Flight DAWN: CAP flight container for Phantoms with expended Paveways.
Flight ROWAN: 2x Sperwer, 1x Reaper w/Gorgon Stare. Recon for Tunguskas at high altitude.

Phase 5: GRAYSCALE
Objective: search and destroy any and all opfor in front of 3rd, 5th, and 19th Angolan. ETC: 2 hours
Flight GOLD: Should have completed rearming from Phase ELECTRUM at this time. Upon confirmation of destruction of Tunguska, search and destroy Bulgarian forces.
Flight LUCAS: Continuing from Phase CULTURE, after Tunguskas are nullified, proceed to strike other viable targets. Shift to support Mbeke's Rangers in the east as needed.
Flight HILBERT: 2x Hawks w/Mavericks. Search and destroy Bulgarian forces at max launch altitude for Mavericks.

Phase X: SKULL (OPTIONAL)
Objective: Search and destroy diamond convoy. Only execute after Bulgarian forces have been sufficiently damaged (including S-300 and Tunguska destroyed!) and/or Mbeke's Rangers can no longer be viably supported (e.g. Phantoms are Winchester). This phase is included for completion's sake only; I do not recommend executing it. ETC: 1 hour
Flight GUZMA: 2x Tornado, w/Taurus KEPR. Launch straight-line when viable.

Curse you Hayard-Gunnes!
The main thing I wanted to minimize with my plan is this nonsense where our forces are spread out and wander halfway across the map when they get a stupid idea in their heads. Place the tanker in a position close to but behind the front where it can be screened. Have forces match speed so they don't get strung out. Top up before operations so our guys don't wander off ten feet before the goal line. Concentrate forces. Keep that in mind if you're putting your support forces somewhere far away from and at a weird angle to your operational goals.

Then I'm not sure why you're such bearish about my plan, given that it's literally the only one with clearly-establish No-Fly Zones and No-Engagement zones.

Almost all those things (tanking, target selection, speed matching, etc.) are all things that are in Yooper's hands.

I meant your planned acquisition that got voted down and you just won't stop whining about.

I was feeling pretty salty about not getting more Phantoms for the Lhasa strike.

Clearly the solution is to have our ground mercs stage a heist on the diamond convoy. We'll have all the money we could ever want!

I'll finally be able to get that F-22 I've had my eye on. Lightly used, only suffocated one previous owner.
