Thanks for the replies! Might just watch that half hour summary and let the game speak for itself.

edit: 5 minutes into this video and this poo poo is nuts. Dragons and clones and rebirths and name changes and what the hell

Watched the 30 minute video and didn't understand a drat thing. This Superbunnyhop video was in the related videos section and I like that guy well enough so I watched his video and he did a much better job of summarizing things from an outsider's perspective, aka the story is incredibly insane.

And as far as translations go: I'm a little soured on these kinds of discussions by now. Sometime in the past two years people on the internet decided that they could do translators' jobs better than they could and started nitpicking every line in every game. Not saying that's what people are doing here, but seriously some guy just made a website dedicated to point out Persona 5's translation issues (which do exist, but still) with the headline that Atlus had 'failed' their fanbase. I'm just kind of tired of the topic by now. People love the English translations/VA, and from what I've heard the Japanese VA is great as well, so you can't go wrong with this game.

There's only one text-based thing in Automata that is actually a big problem, and it doesn't have anything to do with translation:
I think they accidentally put the full document regarding the nature of Yorha in one of the Soul Tower chests. Based on what 9S says, it's only supposed to contain the secret about machine cores = android black boxes. Later the Red Girls give him the same document, and it's only then that 9S reacts to the part where YorHa is destined to fail. Think someone messed up a copy/paste somewhere along the line.

No problem! There's a couple character names in the Nier section you'd want to remember, so don't gloss over those.

Drakengard's overarching plot is batshit insane. It's great. It has almost nothing to do with Nier but all of those Dark Id LPs are highly recommended because of how entertaining those games where when you don't have to actually play them.

I saw the Japanese version of the text in a JP player's stream and it doesn't have the error. Someone in localization must have messed up.

The tracks go off in this direction.
Before I finished Route A I got the FOrest Castle treasure sidequest. I found two pieces, but I didn't complete it because I couldn't get to two of the treasures and just wanted to push on with the main story. Do I just need to git gud at jumping to finish that sidequest? Also I found a big door in the back of the castle that requires a key. Was that possible to get on Route A?

That door is in fact what the treasures help you open! It's possible in route A, you just have to learn to jump good. Make sure you're using the pod charge attack (dodge+shoot in the air), it really helps a ton for getting more distance.

Pretty much confirmed by a patch fixing it.

It's definitely an error, and one worth fixing, since it actually hurts dramatic payoff towards the end.

You can't get back there. The stamp and quest you're looking for are actually underneath the boss room. Look around inside the theater and you'll find an elevator.

Now imagine you somehow didn't kill one of the attackers or it hosed off to Cleveland, so when you finally get to the end of their route they march around in a circle for 20 minutes while you increasingly more desperately search for something that will SHUT. THEM. UP.

This is what happened to me. I finally ventured too close to the resistance camp and it auto-failed the quest.

I'm not so conflicted about how we're killing all these robots anymore.

I don't think there's anything to worry about. From my understanding it's just the order, you'll go through it all eventually.

You're just choosing the order you want to play them in. It doesn't effect what happens in either story. And you can only switch when you finish the next major story beat, you can't do it on the fly.

TURN IN YOUR SIDEQUESTS FIRST! I thought I'd be 'efficient' and turn in everything at once, but once you do a main story thing at one point, it advances the main story line straight away and cancels your sidequests.

yeah optimizing your chips is very important, and the dodge is ridiculously generous and has no cooldown so you can just mash it forever to avoid most damage.

I loved the english localization and VA and consider them a perfectly valid version of the game, but it's always interesting to hear about subtle (or less subtle) localization differences and context or reasons for them. Though i also feel that way about other games and other media beyond games.

That P5 guy sounds pretty nutty, although i've heard some parts of that translation are rougher than Nier's stuff. I definitely know my fair share of insanely sloppy, half-assed localizations from english to my native tongue that i wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole.

Yeah it is. The bridge part is real good in both languages, but Kyle nails the exasperated breathing so goddamn well and has the bonus of sounding slighly less like Gollum falling into a ravine than the Japanese one.

P5's localisation never really gets past "good" at its best and trends towards "kinda bad" for most of it with some dips into "really bad".

NieR: Automata's on the other hand is "good" at its very worst.

P5 deserved a much better localisation than what it got, but it's not necessarily a entirely bad thing that it got a bad one because the fallout from it will show to the parties involved that people notice this, are disappointed by it and that they can curry favour in future by doing better. Naturally, you'd never choose to have a lovely localisation but there's still positives to take away from this.

I like the JPN VA for everyone. It fits with the strange and dystopian setting which basically looks like a destroyed Japan vs American town esp when you go the mall/apt blocks. Also A2's taunts.

I hack the tall robot with the gun arm and blast all the other robots away. Then, when it's all clear, target and hack the rabbit statue. That'll activate him and self-destruct the one you're in.

I had the same problem. What worked for me was chain hacking every enemy in the area to hop between them until the game auto-locked onto the bunny, then hacking it.

Worked better than the times I just tried attacking it over and over, at least.
